Fingerlings hatched from the eggs of the puffer, Fugu rubripes, which were spawned on May 21, 1969, and were cultivated. The results of their growth during 150 days, until October 25th, are summarized as follows: 1. The eggs began to hatch after 163 hours, at a water temperature of 15.9 to $17.4^{\circ}C$, and the hatching rate was $61.56\%$. 2. They reached the post-larval stage 6 to 7 days after hatching, and at this time a high mortality occurred. The mortality rate was 57.26 to $68.0\%$. 3. Sixteen days after hatching some of the larger fingerlings (6.7mm in total length) began attacking some of the smaller ones (4.6mm in to total length). 4. Twenty five to twenty eight days after hatching, the fish changed their food, and at this time a second high mortality occured. The total mortality rate amounted to 90.7 to $90.9\%$ of the total hatch. 5. After the fingerling stage. cannibalism occurs. The fish usually attack the caudal part of other fingerlings. It occurs regardless of body length and when the food supply is short. 6. The food coeffiicient at the age of 46 days (when body length is 53 to 68 mm) was 5.5 for short-necked clams, 8.5 for earth-worms, and 8.7 for fishes. 7. A third hish mortality occurred 53 to 63 days after hatching, the total mortality amounting to 95.76 to $97.34\%$, and the main cause of the mortality was found to be rickets resulting from nutritional deficiency 8. The growth rates were as follows: 2.68mm just after hatching, 3.84mm at the age of 10 days; 7.96mm after 25 days; 20.96mm or 130mg after 40 days; 73.68mm or 9.06g after 80 days: and 123mm or 31.8g after 150 days. 9. The water temperature during the above period was 15.7 to $28.4^{\circ}C$ with an average of $22.10^{\circ}C$ and the salinity was 25.53 to $34.50\%$ with an average of $32.07\%$, 10. The young of this species could endure well a wide range and sudden rise in salinity, and could survive easily when the salinity suddenly fell to $5\%$, but a considerable mortality occured when it fell to $3\%$. 11. When the fish were tranferred directly to fresh water from normal sea water they died out in 9 hours and 40minutes. However, when transferred from water of $5\%$ salinity at which they were reared for 54 days, they survived for 60 hours and 40 mimutes longer than in the former case.
With the rapid progress in seed production techniques, aquaculture production of economically important species of marine fish has been accelerated in Japan. Howecer, mass mortalities due to viral infections as well as other microbial infections have often occurred during the seed production and grow-out stages. Among these diseases, four viral diseases have been known in cultured Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) since around 1980. In this paper, viral diseases of cultured flounder in Japan are briefly reviewed, with special attention to two viral diseases. viral epidermal hyperplasia and rhabdovirus infection which are relatively important because of their frequent occurrence. Viral epidermal hyperplasia is characterized by fin opacity and associated with high mortality in larval flounder Electron microscopy of affected epidermal cells and transmission experiments with tissue filtrates demonstrated that the disease was caused by a herpesvirus but the agent has not been isolated in fish cell lines. On the other hand, rhabdovires infection occurrs in juvenile and production size fish with hemorrhage in the skeltal muscle and fins, congestion of the gonads, and ascites. A rhabdovirys was isolated in RTG-2 cells from the diseased flounder as a causative agent, which was designated hirame rhabdovirus (HRV) or Rahbdovirus olivaceus. HRV is serologically distinguishable from other known fish rhabdoviruses. Intensive researches on these viral diseases started in 1980th. but properties of the causative agents and infection mechanisms have not been fully investigated. This results in difficulty in controlling these diseases.

The developmental responses of insects to temperature are important considerations in gaining a better understanding of their ecology and life histories. Temperature-dependent phenology models permit examination of the effects of temperature on the geographical distributions, population dynamics, and management of insects. Measurements of insect developmental and survival responses to temperature pose practical challenges that depend on the chosen modality, variability among individuals, and high mortality rates near the lower and upper threshold temperatures. Different temperature levels can significantly affect larval development of Eurema hecabe. The development of E. hecabe reared on leaves of Lespedeza cuneata was investigated at three temperature regimes (20, 25, and 30℃), a relative humidity of 60%, and a light:dark photoperiod of 14:10 h. The developmental time from larva to adult was 34.3, 20.6, and 17.9 d at temperatures of 20, 25, and 30℃, respectively. Pupal rate was 47.6%, 47.6%, and 61.9% at temperatures of 20, 25, and 30℃, respectively. The developmental threshold temperature estimated from larva to pupae was 8.1℃ with 381.7 degree-days. There is an increasing need for a standardized manual for rearing this butterfly species based on adequate knowledge of its ecology.

We previously pointed out that the polluted sediment elutriate manifestly affected the early events of reproductive outputs in the Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas. A serial dilution of priority xenobiotic sediment elutriates determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) were exposed to gametes of the oyster with different stress burdens to detail the maternal stress transfer to its reproductive outputs. There was an apparent critical concentration over which survival and morphogenesis were significantly affected with more profound damage in morphogenesis. The critical concentration which drives mortality and abnormal morphogenesis of the larvae corresponded to a dilution between 10 and 20% of our elutriate. The adverse effects of the early lives by the xenobiotic exposure over the critical concentration were magnified by the maternal stress from the exposed benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), one of the priority polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during the maturation condition. These results indicate that maternal transfer of the xenobiotic compounds from oysters living in the contaminated location might represent a significant adverse effect to their larval population of wild seeds.
Susceptibility of American serpentine leafminer, Liriomyza trifolii, to four insecticides (abamectin, ememectin benzoate, spinosad and milbemectin) was tested in the laboratory. All insecticides showed high mortality on the egg and larval stage, but on pupa and adult. Oviposition was 100% suppressed by abamectin, emamectin benzoate and spinosad, and 85% by milbemectin. The three insecticides except milbemectin inhibited greatly the feeding activity of adults. Adult longevity was reduced (0.8-1.4 days) by the tree insecticides except milbemectin, in comparison with 5.5 days in control. Abamectin, emamectin benzoate and spinosad were effective on oviposition until 7 days after treatment, but milbemetin was not.
Talaromyces marneffei is the only dimorphic species in its genus and causes a fatal systemic mycosis named talaromycosis. Our previous study indicated that knockdown of AcuD gene (encodes isocitrate lyase of glyoxylate bypass) of T. marneffei by RNA interference approach attenuated the virulence of T. marneffei, while the virulence of the AcuD knockout strains was not studied. In this study, T. marneffei-zebrafish infection model was successfully established through hindbrain microinjection with different amounts of T. marneffei yeast cells. After co-incubated at $28^{\circ}C$, the increasing T. marneffei inoculum doses result in greater larval mortality; and hyphae generation might be one virulence factor involved in T. marneffei-zebrafish infection. Moreover, the results demonstrated that the virulence of the ${\Delta}AcuD$ was significantly attenuated in this Zebrafish infection model.
The rockworm gut flora was identified at each growth stage to elucidate the composition of the bacterial community. The source material was Marphysa sanguinea fed regular feed and fed biofloc at the adult stage in parallel. The systematic bacterial community composition was determined based on the next-generation sequencing method, and alpha diversity and beta diversity were conducted to access the species diversity within and between the bacterial communities, respectively. The composition of the gut flora changed considerably as the rockworms developed. The shift in the gut flora was confirmed at the phylum, family, and genera level of the bacterial communities. The Vibrio species associated with high rockworm mortality occupied 7.7% of the gut flora at the larval stage; however, they disappeared in the healthy adult gut. Moreover, different gut flora was observed between adults fed regular feed and those fed biofloc. Specifically in the biofloc-fed adult gut, several immune relevant and water-purifying bacteria were detected. The biofloc-fed adult gut flora could decompose and mineralize organic sediment, and thus be effectively utilized for integrated multitrophic aquaculture. The Venn diagram revealed that only two bacterial species were shared throughout all growth stages, and the biofloc-fed adults exhibited the highest diversity within the bacterial community.
In this experiment, we investigated the toxicity of tebuconazole (fungicide) using domestic frog embryos, along the FETAX (Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay-Xenopus) protocol. Bufo gargarizans, Hyla japonica, and Pelophylax nigromaculatus embryos were incubated, and investigation of the tebuconazole effect was performed by the probit analysis. As a result, depending on the concentrations of tebuconazole, the mortality and malformation rates were increased and larval body length was decreased. The teratogenic concentrations (EC50) of tebuconazole were 34.4mg L-1, 10.6mg L-1, and 14.9mg L-1, respectively, and the embryo lethal concentrations(LC50) of tebuconazole were 74.7 mg L-1, 38.5 mg L-1, and 39.1 mg L-1, respectively. The teratogenic index (TI) valuesof tebuconazole were 2.19, 3.58, and 2.65; thus, it showed teratogenicity in embryonic development of these three frogs. These results revealed that in this experiment, tebuconazole suppressed the development of embryos at a relatively low concentration. In addition, mortality, malformation ratios, malformation patterns, and growth rates were similar to the results from the other assay systems. Therefore, tebuconazole was thought to have an effect on the embryo development of domestic frogs. In future, it will be necessary to identify species specificity in order to the clarify the causes of differences in mortality, malformation rate, and malformation patterns depending on the species.
Insect pests of eggplant, pepper, Chinese cabbage, watermelon, cucumber, melon, and tomato seedlings were surveyed in eleven propagation houses from 1998 to 1999. Ten species of insect pests of nine genera in eight families, two species of mites of one genus in one family, and three species of slugsor snails in three genera belonging to two families were found from the observed seedlings but Bradysia agrestis was the most serious pest out of them. Thus, occurrence and damage of B. agrestis were investigated in two propagation houses all the year round. In the observation of seedling mortalities of seven crops in May, July, October and the following February, only watermelon seedlings were withered and dead by the larva of B. agrestis with different mortality depending on time representing 81.9%, 41.3%, 54.9%, and 79.1%, respectively. All the developmental stages of B. agrestis were found every month throughout the year. Larval density and adult density were different according to season with the highest numbers in May showing 34.9 and 407.4, respectively. Mortality of watermelon seedlings was higher in April and May than the other months showing 83.3% in April and 82.4% in May. The number of adults attracted to sticky trap was also different depending on card colour. The number of adults was much higher on yellow sticky card (326.2) than blue sticky card (20.2). In the investigation of the number of adults on yellow sticky card at 25 cm and 120 cm above the bench and 10 cm under the bench, more numbers of adults were caught at 25 cm above the bench (273.7) and 10 cm under the bench (320.1) than 120 cm above the bench (27.9). Mortalities of cucumber, pepper, and watermelon seedlings after transplanting in greenhouses were not significantly different depending on culture method.
The developmental times of mealworm beetle larvae, Tenebrio molitor were studied at six temperatures ranging from 15 to $30^{\circ}C$ with 60~70% RH, and a photoperiod of 14L:10D. Mortality of larval period was very low at 17 and $20^{\circ}C$ but did not die over $22^{\circ}C$. Developmental time of larva was decreased with increasing temperature. The total developmental time of T. molitor larvae was longest at $17^{\circ}C$ (244.3 days) and shortest at $30^{\circ}C$ (110.8 days). Egg and larvae were not developed at $15^{\circ}C$. The lower developmental threshold and effective accumulative temperatures for the total larval stages were $6.0^{\circ}C$ and 2564.1 degree-days, respectively. The relationship between developmental rate and temperature was fitted by a linear model and nonlinear model of Logan-6($r^2$=0.95). The distribution of completion of each development stage was well described by the 2-parameter Weibull function ($r^2$=0.8502~0.9390).
