  • The purpose of this study (I) is to provide a new methodology for evaluating deterioration of buried pipe networks for the large-diameter old pipe improvement project currently performed by K-water. To develop a new assessment model for large-diameter pipe deterioration, this study has investigated the three representative methods for the pipe deterioration assessment such as evaluation methods 1995 and 2002, and the state evaluation method through literature reviews. The ten assessment factors were selected by considering large-diameter pipe characteristics as well as common factors with high priority in the three methods. Also, the weighting of the factors was estimated by a regression equation from experiments and analysis on domestic large-diameter pipelines and expert survey data. It is expected that the new assessment model developed by analysing the existing three models is more reliable to assess the deterioration of large-diameter pipe networks.

  • Analyses of subsurface drainage effects of farmland with respect to pipe and envelop material are made by the laboratory experiments using soil box to give basic information for the subsurface drainage system planning and design. Three different diameter PVC perforated pipes and a mesh pipe are used with envelop materials such as sand, rice bran, and crushed stone. Steady state subsurface drainage flow rate increased as envelop material changed from sand to rice bran and crushed stone. This indicates that as the hydraulic conductivity of the envelop material increases, the drainage flow rate increases. On the other hand, for a given envelop material, the mesh pipe which has the largest openning area shows the largest flow rate while small diameter PVC pipes show small flow rates. This tells that as the openning area and pipe diameter increase, the flow rate increases, too. Therefore, selection of pipe and envelop material should be made in accordance with the design drainage flow rate. Unsteady state subsurface drainage flow rate with respect to time differs for different envelop material. In case the sand was used as an envelop material, the small diameter PVC pipes show larger flow rates than the large diameter PVC pipe and mesh pipe. When the rice bran was used, the mesh pipe shows the largest flow rate, while small diameter pipes show smaller flow rates. In case the crushed stone was used as an envelop material, the large diameter PVC pipe and mesh pipe show larger flow rates, while small diameter pipes show a little bit smaller flow rates. However, the variation of flow rates among different pipes is the smallest when the crushed stone is used. The flow rate curve with respect to the pipe changes little for the crushed stone envelop which has a large hydraulic conductivity, while that changes much for the sand and rice bran envelops. However, it is difficult to draw a consistent relationship between the drainage flow rate and pipe for all the envelop materials. Since the subsurface drainage experiments are made only under the restricted laboratory condition in this study, further study including field experiment is required.

  • Large diameter piles can be defined as piles with diameter of at least 0.76 m (2.5 ft). In bridge foundation, large diameter piles have been used as pier foundations and their use has been increased greatly. In this study, static pile load tests for large diameter piles peformed in Kwangan Grande Bridge construction site were introduced. Also, various sensor installation methods for several types of piles (that is, open-ended steel pipe pile, drilled shafts and socketed pipe piles), pipe axial load measuring method, load transfer analysis method and pile load test results (pile-head load - settlement curve, and pile axial load distribution curve along the pile depth) were introduced.

  • In this paper, a case study of drivability and bearing capacity of large diameter steel pipe piles at PTT LNG site in Thailand is introduced. The LNG facilities were designed to be founded on steel pipe pile foundations driven into the weathered rock formation overlaid by sand layers. The drivability analyses of open ended pipe piles were carried out using GRL WEAP program and the bearing capacities of the piles were estimated. Dynamic load tests were performed to evaluate end bearing resistance, and it is shown that the measured end bearing resistance is smaller than the calculated end bearing because the plugging does not develop sufficiently in case of large diameter pipe piles.

  • A novel steel-pipe energy pile is introduced, in which the deformed rebars for main reinforcing are replaced with steel pipes in a large diameter cast-in-place energy pile. Here, the steel pipes act as not only reinforcements but also heat exchangers by circulating the working fluid through the hollow hole in the steel pipes. Under this concept, the steel-pipe energy pile can serve a role of supporting main structures and exchanging heat with surrounding mediums without installing additional heat exchange pipes. In this study, the steel-pipe energy pile was constructed in a test bed considering the material properties of steel pipes and the subsoil investigation. Then, the thermal performance test (TPT) in cooling condition was conducted in the constructed energy pile to investigate thermal performance. In addition, the thermal performance of the steel-pipe energy pile was compared with that of the conventional large diameter cast-in-place energy pile to evaluate its applicability. As a result, the steel-pipe energy pile showed 11% higher thermal performance than the conventional energy pile along with much simpler construction processes.

  • The energy conversion from the temperature difference between hot and cold source like ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC), requires a long and large-diameter pipe (about 1000 to 10,000 meters long) to reach the deep water. The pipe diameter ranges from 2.8 meter for proposed early test systems, to 5 meter for large, commercial power generation systems. The pipe must be designed to resist collapsing pressures produced by water temperature and density differences, and the reduced pressure required to induce flow up the pipe. Other design considerations include the external-drag effect on the pipe due to ocean currents, and the wave-induced motions of the platform to which the pipe is attached. Various approaches to the pipe construction have been proposed, including aluminum, steel, concrete, and fiberglass. More recently, a flexible pipe construction involving the use of fiberglass reinforced plastic has been proposed. This report presents the results of a scaled fixed cold water pipe (CWP) model test program performed by EES(Engineering Equation Solver) to demonstrate the feasibility of this pipe approach.

  • Numerical analysis were performed to investigate the stability and internal movement of tunnel located beneath the base of abutment of bridge according to the method of supporting tunnel. Two supporting methods of the multi-staged grouting method with steel pipes and the large diameter of pipe supporting method were used in the centrifuge model tests. The slip form of model lining, specially built to simulate the process of tunnel excavating under the condition of accelerated g-level, was used in the centrifuge model tests. Four centrifuge model tests were performed, changing the supporting methods of the multi-staged grouting method with steel pipes and the large diameter of pipe supporting method and the location of model abutment base of bridge. For internal displacement of tunnel, movements of the crown. The left and the right sides of spring line were measured during the proceeds of excavating tunnel in centrifuge model tests. Test results were compared with numerically estimated values of internal displacement of tunnel by using the commercially available FEM software of PENTAGON-3D. It was found that they were in good agreements and the large diameter of pipe supporting method was more stable than the multi-staged grouting method with steel pipes with respect to the internal movement of tunnel.

  • The pullout behavior of large-diameter steel pipe piles(diameter = 2,500mm, length = 38~40m), which were designed as compression piles but used as reaction piles during a static compression load test on a pile(diameter = 1,000m, length = 40m), was investigated. The steel pipe piles were driven by 20m into a marine deposit and weathered soil layer and then socketed by 10m into underlying weathered and soft rock layers. The sockets and pipe were filled with reinforced concrete. The steel pipe and concrete in the steel pipe zone and concrete and rebars in the socketed zone were fully instrumented to measure strains in each zone. The pullout deformations of the reaction pile heads were measured by LVDTs. Over the course of the study, a maximum uplift deformation of 7mm was measured in the heads of reaction piles when loaded to 10MN, and 1mm of residual uplift deflection was measured. In the reaction piles, about 83% and about 12% of the applied pullout loads were transferred in the weathered rock layer and in the soft rock layer, respectively. Also, at an uplift force of 10MN, shear stresses due to the uplift in the weathered rock layer md soft rock layer were developed as much as 125.3kPa and 61.8kPa, respectively. Thus, the weathered rock layer should be utilized as resisting layer in which frictional farce could be mobilized greatly.
