  • Magnetic fields appear to be ubiquitous in astrophysical environments. The existence of magnetic fields in the large-scale structure of the universe has been established through observations of Faraday rotation and synchrotron emission, as well as through recent gamma-ray observations. Yet, the nature and origin of the magnetic fields remains controversial and largely unknown. In this talk, I briefly summarize recent developments in our understanding of the nature and origin of magnetic fields. I also describe a plausible scenario for the origin of the magnetic fields; seed fields were created in the early universe and subsequently amplified during the formation of the large-scale structure of the universe. I then discuss the prospect of observation of magnetic fields in the large-scale structure of the universe.

  • In this paper, the robust non-fragile guaranteed cost control problem is studied for a class of linear large-scale systems with uncertainties and a given quadratic cost functions. The uncertainty in the system is assumed to be norm-bounded and time-varying. Also, the state-feedback gains for subsystems of the large-scale system are assumed to have norm-bounded controller gain variations. The problem is to design a state feedback control laws such that the closed-loop system is asymptotically stable and the closed-loop cost function value is not more than a specified upper bound for all admissible uncertainties and controller gain variations. Sufficient conditions for the existence of such controllers are derived based on the linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach combined with the Lyapunov method. A parameterized characterization of the robust non-fragile guaranteed cost controllers is given in terms of the feasible solutions to a certain LMI. A numerical example is given to illustrate the proposed method.

  • In large-scale systems, we frequently encounter the time-delay and the uncertainty, and these should be considered in the design of controller because these are the source of the degradation of the system performance and instability of system. In this paper, we consider the robust stability of the linear large scale systems with the uncertainties and the time-delays. The considered uncertainties are both structured uncertainty and the unstructured uncertainty. Also, the considered time-delays are time-varying having finite time derivative limits. Based on the Lyapunov theorem and the linear matrix inequality(LMI) technique, we present two sufficient conditions that guarantee the robust stability of the system. The conditions are expressed as the LMI forms which can be easily checked their feasibility by using the well-known LMI control toolbox. Finally, we show by two examples that our results are less conservative than the previous results.

  • This paper presents a method of hierachical optimal control for time invariant large scale systems via Single Term Walsh Series. It is well known that the optimal control of a large scale system with quadratic performance criteria often involves the determination of time varying feedback gain matrix by solving the matrix Riccati differential equation, which is usually quite difficult. Therefore, in order to solve the problem, this paper is introduced to Single Term Walsh Series. The advantages of proposed method are simple and attractive for the control of large scale system in computation.

  • In the last meeting of KAS, we reported the first statistical study of Faraday rotation measure (RM) in the large-scale structure of the universe using the data of cosmological structure formation simulations. With a turbulence dynamo model for the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF), we predicted that the root mean square of RM through filaments is \sim 1 rad/m^2. Future radio observatories such as the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) could detect this signal level. However, it is known that the typical foreground galactic RM is a few tens and less than ten rad/m^2 in the low and high galactic latitudes, respectively. So the RM in the large-scale structure could be detected only after the foreground galactic RM is removed. In this talk, we show how we remove the foreground galactic RM and what we obtain from the masked data, by using some noise models and masking techniques. Our results can be used to simulate future RM observations by SKA, and eventually to constrain the origin and evolution of the IGMF in the large-scale structure.

  • This paper proposes an insect behavior-inspired routing algorithm for large-scale wireless mesh networks. The proposed algorithm is adapted from the behavior of an insect called Bombyx mori, a male silkmoth. Its unique behavior is its flying technique to find the source of pheromones. The algorithm consists of two steps: the shortest-path algorithm and the zigzag-path algorithm. First, the shortest-path algorithm is employed to transmit data. After half of the total hops, the zigzag-path algorithm, which is based on the movement of the male B. mori, is applied. In order to adapt the biological behavior to large-scale wireless mesh networks, we use a mesh topology for implementing the algorithm. Simulation results show that the total energy used and the decision time for routing of the proposed algorithm are improved under certain conditions.

  • Possibility of large scale ethanol fermentation from sweet potato were compared with low temperature and high temperature rooking. Productivity of sweet potato mash cooked at 9$0^{\circ}C$ for 120 minutes was higher than that mash cooked at 124$^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes and also fermentation yield ai low temperature cooking was better than high temperature cooking. Low temperature cooking was successfully carried out on a large scale. In conclusion, low temperature cooking on large scale should be reduce energy consumption by approximate 30% compared with high temperature cooking.

  • Formidable growth of Internet technologies has revealed challenging issues about its scale and performance evaluation. Modeling and simulation play a central role in the evaluation of the behavior and performance of the large-scale network systems. Large numbers of nodes affect simulation performance, simulation execution time and scalability in a weighty manner. Most of the existing simulators have numerous problems such as size, lack of system theoretic approach and complexity of modeled network. In this work, a scalable discrete-event modeling approach is described for studying networks' scalability and performance traits. Key fundamental attributes of Internet and its protocols are incorporated into a set of simulation models developed using the Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) approach. Large-scale network models are simulated and evaluated to show the benefits of the developed network models and approaches.

  • Metamodels using response surface methodology (RSM) are used for the optimality analysis of linear programming (LP). They have the form of a simple polynomial, and predict the optimal objective function value of an LP for various levels of the constraints. The metamodelling techniques for optimality analysis of LP can be applied to large-scale LP models. What is needed is some large-scale application of the techniques to verify how accurate they are. In this paper, we plan to use the large scale LP model, strategic transport optimal routing model (STORM). The developed metamodels of the large scale LP can provide some useful information.
