  • The Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) is composed of the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and the Hilbert Spectral Analysis (HSA). The EMD decomposes any time series data into a small number of components called the Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs), compared to the Discrete Fourier Transform which decomposes a data into a large number of harmonic functions. Each IMF has varying amplitude and frequency with respect to time, which can be obtained by HSA. The time resolution of the modes in HHT is the same as that of the given time series, while in the Wavelet Transform, Constant Q Transform and Short-Time Fourier Transform, there is a tradeoff between the resolutions in frequency and time. Based on the time-dependent amplitudes of IMFs, we develop an Event Trigger Generator and demonstrate its efficiency by applying it to gravitational-wave data.

  • As the world supply of fossil fuel sources decreases, the need for efficient energy consevation and develping green energy technologies becomes critical. Because of the high cost of the foundation for large turbines and optional high wind speed (over 12 m/s), it is very difficult to be located at inland city. For the solution above mentioned problem, we have been experimented about that not only using the adaption of wind power system on buildings for improving turbine efficiency, but also applying a wound rotor type induction generator for a small wind turbine. In this research, we try to find out the wind direction and wind speed those were measured every 1 min., during operation period, using the anemometers which consist of horizontally spinning cups on a vertical post. Performance testing for small wind turbine generating system was carried out by using the induction motor and invertor. Finally, we measured the power of 1 kW wind turbine system with the clamp meter and a voltmeter.

  • With the advent of sound field simulator, many sound fields have been reproduced by obtaining the impulse responses of specific acoustic spaces like famous concert hall, opera house. This sound field reproduction has been done by the linear convolution operation between the sound input signal and the impulse response of certain acoustic space. However, the conventional finite impulse response based linear convolution operation always makes real-time implementation of sound field generator impossible due to the large amount of computational burden. This paper introduces the fast convolution method using perceptual redundancy in the processed signals, input audio signal and room impulse response. Temporal and spectral psycho-acoustic filters considering masking effects are implemented in the proposed convolution structure. It reduces the computational burden of convolution methods for realtime implementation of a sound field generator. The conventional convolutions are compared with the proposed one in views of computational burden and sound quality. In the proposed method, a considerable reduction in the computational burden was realized with acceptable changes in sound quality.

  • Recently, a piezo actuator based linear motor has been actively studied because of its higher power density, compactness and quick response. However, the characteristic of small displacement makes the application of a piezo actuator limitative. In order to overcome this limitation, some actuation mechanisms using a piezo actuator are designed by bi-metal composite or more than two piezo actuators. Therefore, it enables to generate large displacement and have high resolution. In the proposed piezo motor, we have designed a bi-directional linear motor that can be operated by only one piezo actuator. In addition, it is activated with low frequency of the applied voltage, since, we utilize first mode shape of structure of motion generator to vibrate. Finally, moving direction can be simply controlled by changing the ratio of input frequency to natural frequency of structure of motion generator.

  • A highly efficient AC-DC converter for small wind power generation systems using a brushless DC generator (BLDCG) is presented in this paper. The market standard AC-DC converter for a BLDCG consists of a three-phase diode rectifier and a boost DC-DC converter, which has an IGBT and a fast recovery diode (FRD). This kind of two-stage solution basically suffers from a large amount of conduction loss and the efficiency greatly decreases under a light load, or at a low current, because of the switching devices with a P-N junction. In order to overcome this low efficiency, especially at a low current, a three-phase bridgcless converter consisting of three upper side FRDs and three lower side Super Junction FETs is presented. In the overall operating speed region, including the cut-in speed, the efficiency of the proposed converter is improved by up to 99%. Such a remarkable result is validated and compared with conventional solutions by calculating the power loss based on I-V curves and the switching loss data of the adopted commercial switches and the current waveforms obtained through PSIM simulations.

  • The failure frequency of the Emergency Diesel Generator(EDG) at Nuclear Power Plants(NPPs) is not so much lower than that of the Marine engines, whereas the running hours of the diesel engine at NPPs is much less than those of the engines for commercial service. The primary factor results from the severe surveillance test requirements such as fast start, large number of starting test, fast load-run, high load running, etc. The other factor comes from the excessive maintenance based on the engine maker's instruction manual that did not incorporate the peculiar characteristics of the diesel engines at NPPs. In this paper, the present preventive maintenance program on the basis of the Pielstick diesel engines was reviewed for the purpose of securing the reliability of the emergency diesel generator at NPPs and the ways for its improvement were presented by referring to the overseas cases for their applications.

  • A thorough understanding of the transient behavior during start-up is essential in the design and operation of the heat recovery steam generator(HRSG). During this period of time, material that is exposed to high temperature and experiences a large temperature variation is subject to high thermal stress. In this work, a transient formulation of the HRSG is constructed including the estimation of the thermal stress and fatigue of the drum wall. Start-up behavior of a single-pressure HRSG is analyzed and the effect of bypassing part of the gas turbine exhaust flow on the thermal stress evolution is examined. It is found that the modulation of the gas flow rate using a bypass damper is very useful in view of reducing the thermal stress of the drum and ensuring the fatigue lifetime.

  • HS, Ammonia, CH$_4$, VOCs, Microorganism, Bacteria etc produced from swineries or henhouses are known to prevent the growth of livestock. Moreover, they give an unpleasant feeling to the workers. In this study, a methodology to remove odors and toxic gases by oxidation of ozone was thus accomplished. However, most ozone generators which use the atmospheric surrounding air have problems of contamination of electrode for discharge. Therefore in this work, a wire-cylinder type plasma reactor with DC voltage has been used both in a laboratory scale test and in the real swinery to solve the existing problems. About 6 cm of electrode gap could decrease the attachment of dusts, humid aerosols and other polymers, which are contained in the air. This compact designed device could produce ozone to oxidize and remove the air pollutants. But the amount of ozone was not large enough to be harmful to human Health. Also, the concentration of ozone was able to be varied by the input voltage. which makes it available for the proposed system to be installed in various kinds of pig houses. With this device, at maximum 43 mg/㎥ (20 ppm) of ozone could be produced at 40 ㎸ input voltage (consumed energy was 0.1 Wh/㎥). A program was also made in this work to calculate the optimum parameters for design of a plasma reactor in wide range of conditions.

  • The thermal energy from nuclear fission is transferred to the steam generator which is a kind of a large heat exchanger. After the feedwater is injected into the steam generator and absorbs the thermal energy, it is converted into the steam. This steam goes into the turbine. The balance between the generated energy and the consumed energy is required for the nuclear power plant to be stable. For the purpose of which, the feed water, a parameter for energy transfer, should be controlled in stability. Usually, the nuclear power plants are operated in base load in the view of power system for the stability of fission system. Therefore, though there will be almost no unbalance, there can be some instability from unbalance in case of startup/shutdown or disturbance. In this case, the controllability of feedwater pump is very important for the quick recover of stability.

  • This paper describes a CMOS hysteretic DC-DC buck converter with a constant switching frequency for mobile applications. The inherent problems of a large output ripple voltage that the conventional hysteretic DC-DC buck converters has faced have been resolved by using the proposed DC-DC buck converter which employed a ramp generator circuit to be able to increase a switching frequency. The proposed architecture enables the settling response time of charge pump circuit within the converter to become less than 6us suitable for mobile applications. The proposed DC-DC buck converter was implemented by using 0.35 um BCDMOS process and die size was $1.37mm{\times}1.37mm$. The measurement results showed that the proposed circuit received the input of 3.7 V and generated output of 1.2 V with the output ripple voltages less than 20 mV under load currents of 100~400 mA at the fixed switching frequency of 2 MHz. The maximum efficiency of the proposed hysteretic buck converter was measured to be around 93%.
