  • Triaxial tests are essential to estimate the shear strength properties of the soil or rock. Normally triaxial tests are carried out on samples of 38 mm diameter and 76 mm height. Granular materials, predominantly used in base/sub-base construction of pavements or in railways have size range of 60-75 mm. Determination of shear strength parameters of those materials can be made possible only through triaxial tests on large diameter samples. This paper describes a large diameter cyclic triaxial testing facility set up in the Geotechnical Engineering lab of Indian Institute of Science. This setup consists of 100 kN capacity dynamic loading frame, which facilitates testing of samples of up to 300 mm diameter and 600 mm height. The loading ram can be actuated up to a maximum frequency of 10 Hz, with maximum amplitude of 100 mm. The setup is capable of carrying out static as well as dynamic triaxial tests under isotropic, anisotropic conditions with a maximum confining pressure of 1 MPa. Working with this setup is a difficult task because of the size of the sample. In this paper, a detailed discussion on the various problems encountered during the initial testing using the equipment, the ideas and solutions adopted to solve them are presented. Pilot experiments on granular sub-base material of 53 mm down size are also presented.

  • The bi-directional high pressure pile load test(BDH PLT) which is a kind of pile load tests was conducted to find out a reasonable design procedure of large-diameter drilled shafts of large-size building structures. The behaviors of bearing capacity and settlement of the large-diameter drilled shafts were analyzed and the results obtained from BDH PLT were also compared with those obtained from the equations suggested in the specification. In case of the reasonable design procedure adopted, the construction cost could be saved at least 15 ~ 28%. It could be concluded that BDH PLT should be needed for the foundation construction cost reduction of the high-rise building structures.

  • Knowledge of ground thermal properties is most important for the proper design of large scale BHE(borehole heat exchanger) systems. The type, pipe size and thermal performance of the BHE is highly dependent on the ground source heatpump system-efficiency and instruction cost. Thermal response tests with mobile measurement devices were developed primarily for insitu determination of design data for large diameter BHE for triple-U spacer apply. The main purpose has been to determine insitu values of effective ground thermal conductivity and thermal resistance, including the effect of ground-water flow and natural convection in the boreholes. The test rig is set up on a some trailer, and contains a circulation pump, a inline heater, temperature sensors, flow meter, power analysis meter and a data logger for recording the temperature, fluid flow data. A constant heat power is injected into the borehole through the tripl-U pipes system of test rig and the resulting temperature change in the borehole is recorded. The recorded temperature data are analysed with a line-source model, which gives the effective insitu values of rock thermal conductivity and borehole thermal resistance of large diameter BHE for spacer apply.

  • The 11α-hydroxylation of canrenone can be catalyzed by Aspergillus ochraceus in bioreactors, where the geometry of the impeller greatly influences the biotransformation. In this study, the effects of the blade number and impeller diameter of a Rushton turbine on the 11α-hydroxylation of canrenone were considered. The results of fermentation experiments using a 50 mm four-blade impeller showed that 3.40% and 11.43% increases in the conversion ratio were achieved by increasing the blade number and impeller diameter, respectively. However, with an impeller diameter of 60 mm, the conversion ratio with a six-blade impeller was 14.42% lower than that with a four-blade impeller. Data from cold model experiments with a large-diameter six-blade impeller indicated that the serious leakage of inclusions and a 22.08% enzyme activity retention led to a low conversion ratio. Numerical simulations suggested that there was good gas distribution and high fluid flow velocity when the fluid was stirred by large-diameter impellers, resulting in a high dissolved oxygen content and good bulk circulation, which positively affected hyphal growth and metabolism. However, a large-diameter six-blade impeller created overly high shear compared to a large-diameter four-blade impeller, thereby decreasing the conversion ratio. The average shear rates of the former and latter cases were 43.25 s-1 and 35.31 s-1, respectively. We therefore concluded that appropriate shear should be applied in the 11α-hydroxylation of canrenone. Overall, this study provides basic data for the scaled-up production of 11α-hydroxycanrenone.

  • Large diameter tubes have been used until comparatively lately. However, small diameter tubes are largely used because of their high efficiency in heat transfer and low cost, recently. This study focuses on the experimental research of the heat transfer coefficients during evaporation process of R-22 and R-134a in small diameter tubes. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients were measured in smooth horizontal copper tubes with ID 1.77, 3.36 and 5.35 mm. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients in the small diameter tubes (ID <7 mm) were observed to be strongly affected by the size of tube diameters and to differ from those of general predictions in the large diameter tubes. The heat transfer coefficients of ID 1.77 mm copper tube were higher by 20 and 30 % than those of ID 3.36 mm, ID 5.35 mm copper tubes respectively. Also, it was found that it was very difficult to apply some well-known previous predictions (Shah's, Jung's. Kandlikar's and Oh-Katsuda's correlation) to small diameter tubes. Based on the data, the new correlation is proposed to predict the evaporation heat transfer coefficients of R-22 and R-134a in small diameter tubes.

  • The Condensation heat transfer coefficients of R-22 and R-l34a were measured in smooth horizontal copper tubes with inner diameters of 1.77. 3.36 and 5.35 mm. respectively. The experiments were conducted in a closed loop. which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. They were Performed for the following ranges of variables: mass flux (200 to $500\;kg/\textrm{m}^2{\cdot}s$) saturation temperature $30^{\circ}C$ and quality (0 to 1.0). The main results obtained are as follows Condensation heat transfer coefficients in the small diameter tubes (ID < 7 mm) were observed to be strongly affected by inner diameter change and to differ from those in the large diameter tubes. The heat transfer coefficients in the small diameter tubes were 20 ~ 40 % higher than those in the large diameter tubes as the inner diameter of the tube was reduced. Also. it was very difficult to apply some well-known previous predictions (Cavallini-Zecchin's. Haraguchi's and Dobson's correlation) to small diameter tubes. Based on an analogy between heat and mass transfer the new correlation is Proposed to predict the experimental data more accurately.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of thinning intensity on the growth of large diameter trees in Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis S. et Z.) plantation. Eight thinning plots were analyzed by categorizing into heavy thinning, light thinning, no thinning (control) according to thinning intensity. As a result, average DBH increased more in heavy thinning plots than in light thinning or unthinned plots. The number of large trees (DBH>25 cm) were obviously shown the most in heavy thinning plots. It is considered that heavy thinning is needed for the production of the large diameter trees.

  • Numerical analysis were performed to investigate the stability and internal movement of tunnel located beneath the base of abutment of bridge according to the method of supporting tunnel. Two supporting methods of the multi-staged grouting method with steel pipes and the large diameter of pipe supporting method were used in the centrifuge model tests. The slip form of model lining, specially built to simulate the process of tunnel excavating under the condition of accelerated g-level, was used in the centrifuge model tests. Four centrifuge model tests were performed, changing the supporting methods of the multi-staged grouting method with steel pipes and the large diameter of pipe supporting method and the location of model abutment base of bridge. For internal displacement of tunnel, movements of the crown. The left and the right sides of spring line were measured during the proceeds of excavating tunnel in centrifuge model tests. Test results were compared with numerically estimated values of internal displacement of tunnel by using the commercially available FEM software of PENTAGON-3D. It was found that they were in good agreements and the large diameter of pipe supporting method was more stable than the multi-staged grouting method with steel pipes with respect to the internal movement of tunnel.

  • In this paper, a case study of drivability and bearing capacity of large diameter steel pipe piles at PTT LNG site in Thailand is introduced. The LNG facilities were designed to be founded on steel pipe pile foundations driven into the weathered rock formation overlaid by sand layers. The drivability analyses of open ended pipe piles were carried out using GRL WEAP program and the bearing capacities of the piles were estimated. Dynamic load tests were performed to evaluate end bearing resistance, and it is shown that the measured end bearing resistance is smaller than the calculated end bearing because the plugging does not develop sufficiently in case of large diameter pipe piles.

  • Induction bending is a method that allows the bending of any material that conducts electricity. This technology applies a bending force to a material that has been locally heated by an eddy current induced by a fluctuating electromagnetic field. Induction bending uses an inductor to locally heat steel through induction. This results in a narrow heat band in the shape to be bent. In general, the reduction of thickness attenuation of a large-diameter steel pipe is not allowed to exceed 12.5%. In this paper, in order to meet the standard of thickness attenuation reduction, a non-uniform heating temperature jump-bending process was investigated. As a result, the developed bending technique meets the requirements of thickness attenuation reduction for large-diameter steel pipes.
