Laboratory calibration chamber tests for cone penetrometers, pressuremeters and dilatometers in cohesionless soil specimens have been conducted by numerous researchers. However, there have been only few applications to compacted or preconsolidated cohesive soils. Therefore, for the first time, Calibration Chamber System was developed in Korea University. This can be attributed to the extremely time consuming and laborious process involved in the preparation of large cohesive soil specimens in addition to other complexities involving instrumentation for pore pressure monitoring and the need for maintaing saturation by back pressure. Chamber System with similar principle as LSU Chamber System was made of more strengthen and complementary form by increasing system diameter(1.2m), carrying out 1st and 2nd consolidation process in one system for smooth and safe work, accurate Data Aquisition.
A vibration isolation system fur a large reverberation chamber (1,228㎥, 1,000ton) has been installed. The reverberation chamber generates loud noise and induces high level of vibration to perform spacecraft acoustic environmental tests. The isolation system prevents vibration transfer from the chamber to enclosure buildings. This paper describes logical design process and commissioning experiments of the system. Design criteria have been induced from rigid body model of the chamber. Finite element model has been employed to select the characteristics of rubber pads. A total of 21 rubber pads have been installed between the chamber and supporting pedestals. A sand bag of 800kg was dropped on the chamber floor to measure the natural frequency of the isolation system. Absolute transmissibility has been measured while generating 145㏈ in the chamber. The natural frequency of the chamber is 10.5㎐, which is 80% of estimated value. Overall transmissibility at working frequency range (25㎐-10,000㎐) is less than -6㏈.
More and more, spaces are decreasing which satisfy multiple requirements for wind power plants. However, areas which have excellent wind resources and are free to civil complaints occupy a large space, although they are exposed to the cryogenic environment. This study conducted a thermal-fluid analysis of a cryogenic chamber for testing large wind turbine parts exposed to the cryogenic environment. The position of supply air is placed to the upper area to compare each cooling performance for each location of various outlets in mixing ventilated conditions. The study carried out CFD analysis for the chamber both with and without a test object. For the cases without the test object, the air temperature of the upper supply and down extract type chamber was cooled faster by 5-100% than the others. However, for the cases with the test object, the object temperature of upper supply and center extract on the opposite side type chamber was cooled faster by 33-132% than the others. The cooling performance by the air inside the chamber and the test object did not show the same pattern, which implicates the need to consider the cooling performance by not only the air but also the test object in the large cryogenic chamber design for testing large parts.
A vibration isolation system for a large reverberation chamber (1,228 $m^3$ and 1,000 ton) has been installed and verified. The reverberation chamber generates loud noise and induces high level of vibration while performing spacecraft acoustic reliability tests. The isolation system prevents vibration transfer from the chamber to the enclosure buildings. This paper describes design process and commissioning experiments of the system. Design criteria have been derived from rigid body model of the chamber. The stiffness of neoprene pads has been selected by employing finite element analysis of the reverberant chamber and isolation system. A total of 21 neoprene pads have been installed between the chamber and supporting Pedestals. A sand bag of 800kg was dropped on the chamber floor to measure the natural frequency of the isolation system. While 136.9 dB noise is generated in the chamber, absolute transmissibility of the isolation system has been measured. The measured natural frequency of the chamber is 10.2Hz, which is 80% of the predicted value. Overall transmissibility at working frequency range (25∼10.000 Hz) is less than -12.4 dB.
In order to measure the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of a sample which is too large to use commercially available chamber, a stainless steel vacuum chamber (VC) (with an internal diameter of 205 mm and a height of 50 mm) was manufactured and the temperature of the chamber was controlled using an oven. After concentrating the volatiles of the sample in the chamber by helium gas, it was made possible to remove residual volatile substances present in the chamber under reduced pressure ((2 ± 1) × 10-2 mmHg). The chamber was connected to a purge & trap (P&T) using a 6 port valve to concentrate the VOCs, which were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) after thermal desorption (VC-P&T-GC-MS). Using toluene, the toluene recovery rate of this device was 85 ± 2 %, reproducibility was 5 ± 2 %, and the detection limit was 0.01 ng L-1. The method of removing VOCs remaining in the chamber with helium and the method of removing those with reduced pressure was compared using Korean drinking water regulation (KDWR) VOC Mix A (5 μL of 100 ㎍ mL-1) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT, 2 μL of 500 ㎍ mL-1). In case of using helium, which requires a large amount of gas and time, reduced pressure ((2 ± 1) × 10-2 mmHg) only during the GC-MS running time, could remove VOCs and BHT to less than 0.1 % of the original injection concentration. As a result of analyzing volatile substances using VC-P&T-GC-MS of six types of cell phone case, BHT was detected in four types and quantitatively analyzed. Maintaining the chamber at reduced pressure during the GC-MS analysis time eliminated memory effect and did not affect the next sample analysis. The volatile substances in a cell phone case were also analyzed by dynamic headspace (HT3) and GC-MS, and the results of the analysis were compared with those of VC-P&T-GC-MS. Considering the chamber volume and sample weight, the VC-P&T configuration was able to collect volatile substances more efficiently than the HT3. The VC-P&T-GC-MS system is believed to be useful for VOCs measurement of inhomogeneous large sample or devices used inside clean rooms.

There are many factors which influence on the performance of a diesel engine. The piston bowl shape and swirl ratio are important factors to enhance the fuel-air mixing and flame propagation. In this study, calculations of the flow field in the cylinder of the diesel engine were carried out using the CONCHAS-SPRAY code for different bowl shapes and swirl ratios. In the case of constant swirl ratio, vortices which affect fuel-air mixing, evaporation and flame propagation are generated more strongly and consistently in the bowl-piston type combustion chamber than in the flat piston type. With this strong squish effect, injected fuel droplets are widely diffused and rapidly evaporated in the bowl-piston type combustion chamber. Especially a strong squish is developed and large and strong vortices are generated in the edge cutted bowl piston chamber. As the swirl ratio increases, it is found that a large and strong squish and vortices are generated in the combustion chamber and also fuel droplets are diffused into the entire combustion chamber.
Formaldehyde(HCHO) and total volatile organic compounds(VOCs) can cause adverse health effects to the building occupants and may contribute to symptoms of 'Sick Building Syndrome'. These chemical contaminants are emitted from furnishings and electronic equipments as well as building materials. The purpose of this study is to measure and analyze VOCs and HCHO emission concentration from furnitures composed of wood materials including various chemicals by the large chamber method. This paper presents experiment results on the emission concentration of TVOCs and HCHO released from furnitures, such as bed, kitchen, sofa and table by a large chamber($24m^3$). The temperature and air humidity in the chamber are controlled to $25{\pm}1{\circ}C$ and $50{\pm}5%$ for this experiment. When the air change rate is $0.5hr^{-1}$, the background concentrations within the large chamber are below $50{\mu}g/m^3$ for TVOC, $5{\mu}g/m^3$ for HCHO and individual VOCs. The study is investigated the characterization of the chemical emission TVOC and HCHO concentrations and unknown VOCs from 6 furnitures.

The recognition of the natural background radiation is important not only for radiological education but also for the promotion of people's scientific view about radiation. We made a "room" on the web showing natural background radiation as part of a VRM (Virtual Radiation Museum). The "room" shows the video images of the tracks of charged particles from natural background radiation, alpha and beta ray track from known sources using a Large Scale Diffusion Cloud Chamber. The purpose of this study is to make clear the origin of a kind of track (named A-track) which is thick and easy to recognize with the length less than several cm in the cloud chamber, and to make numerical explanation of its counting rate. The study was carried out using a Large Scale Diffusion Cloud Chamber (Phywe, Germany) installed in the Niigata Science Museum. The Model RNC (Pylon Electronics, Canada) was used as Rn-222 source. Ra-226 activity in RNC was 111.6 Bq calibrated with NIST protocol. Rn-222 gas was injected into the cloud chamber. Continuous video recording with use of Digital Handycam (SONY, Japan) was carried out for 360 min. after injection of Rn-222 gas. The number of alpha-ray track (alpha track) in the video images was analyzed. The growth and decay curve of the total activity of Rn-222 and its alpha emitting progeny were calculated and compared with the count of the alpha tracks. As a result the alpha tracks formed by Rn-222 injection resemble A-Tracks. The relationship between A-track in the cloud chamber and atmospheric Rn is discussed.
