Spot welding is very important and useful technology in fabriaction of the thin sheet structure such as the automobile, train and air craft, Because fatigue strength of the spot welding point is however considerably lower than base metal due to stress concentration at the nugget edge, reasonable fatigue strength evaluation of spot welded lap joint is very important to estimate the reliability and durability of th spot welded structure and to establish a criterion of ling life fatigue design. For reasonalbe fatigue strength evaluation, it is necessary to estimate the fatigue strength of spot welded lap joints, systematically. So far, many investigators have numerically and experimentally studied on the systematic fatigue strength estimation for various spot welded lap joints, and the methods suggested has been considerably accumulated. By the way, for applying them in practical fatigue design of the thin sheet structure fabricated by spot welding ,it is also necessary to verify their efficiency and reliability on the predicted results, Therefore, in this study, a statistical fatigue strength estimation method for spot welded lap joints was developed by using the Weibull probability distribution function. From the result, it was found that fatigue strength and fatigue life of the spot welded lap joints having various dimension were able to be statically predicted . And also, a reliable criterion for long life fatigue design of the spot welded lap joint could be established.
The use of the co-cured joining method for composite structures is attractive due to several benefits. However, since the design stress level in cyclic loads is often smaller than the joint strength obtained from the static tensile load test, it is important to establish proper fatigue design criteria. Although some researchers have reported on co-cured joints, there are only a few papers published on the fatigue characteristics of co-cured joints. In this paper, the effect of bond parameters on the fatigue characteristics of a steel-composite co-cured double lap joint under cyclic tensile loads was experimentally investigated. We considered the surface roughness of the steel adherend and the stacking sequence of the composite adherend as bond parameters. A fatigue failure mechanism of the co-cured double lap joint was explained systematically by investigating the surfaces of failed specimens.
In systematic and orderly estimation of fatigue strength of the spot welded lap joints, because the influence of residual stress of fatigue crach initiation and growth is not negligible, there need to estimate fatigue strength considered residual stress at near spot weld part of the lap joints. Therefore, in this thesis, peformed stress distribution and residual stress analysis at near the spot weld part by F.E.M and X-ray diffraction method, and obtained the maximum principal stress considered residual stress at nugget edge by superposing residual stress at nugget edge by superposing their results. From the results obtained above, we could find that fatigue strength of the IB-type spot welded lap joints was rearranged by the maximum principal stress considered residual stress at nugget edge and was entirely low about 13 percents compare with that neglected residual stress.
The fracture characteristics of unidirectional composite single-lap bonded joints were investigated experimentally and numerically. The effects of bonding method, surface roughness, bondline thickness and the existence of fillet on the failure characteristics and strength of bonded single-lap joints were evaluated experimentally. The failure process, failure mode and the behavior of load-displacement curve was apparently different according to bonding method. The failure load of the specimen co-cured without adhesive was definitely superior to other types of specimens but the specimens co-cured with adhesive film had a less strength than secondary bonded specimens. In the secondary bonded specimens, the lower value of surface roughness and existence of fillet improved the strength of specimens. The strain energy release rates calculated by geometric nonlinear finite element analyses and Virtual Crack Closure Technique for the secondary bonded specimens considering the three types of initial cracks - comer crack, edge crack and delamination crack - were consistent with the test results.
This study utilized a high speed lap-shear test to evaluate the mechanical behavior of Sn-37Pb/Cu and Sn-37Pb/Electroless Nickel immersion Gold under bump metallization solder joints under high speed loading and hence the drop reliability. The samples were aged for 120 h at different temperatures ($120^{\circ}C,\;150^{\circ}C,\;170^{\circ}C$) and afterward tested at different displacement rates (0.01 mm/s to 500 mm/s) to examine the effects of aging on the drop life reliability. The combination of the stress-strain graphs captured from the shear tests and identifying a fracture mode dominant in the samples for different strain rates leads us to conclude that the drop reliability of solder joints degrades as the aging temperature increases, possibly due to the role of the IMC layer. This study successfully demonstrates that the analysis based on a high speed lap-shear test could be critically used to evaluate the drop reliability of solder joints.
Adhesive-bonded joints are widely used in the industry. Recently aircraft applications of adhesive bonding joints have been increased extensively in automobile and air industry. Because adhesives which are available for structural applications have been developed a lot and understanding of adhesive bonding has been improved so much. In this study, as the fundamental research of design of adhesive bonding joints, this study considers specimen shape are affect strength and durability of Al/Polymer lap joints. In this research, cross head speed difference were concerned to evaluate their effects on the adhesive strength. Cross head speed makes a change 0.05mm/min, 0.5mm/min, 5mm/min. The result is load-displacement diagram showed brittleness fracture tendency. Fracture tendency that is shown enough on stress distribution of trigonal single lap joint and trigonal edged single lap joint occur the inside of adhesive.
A series of fatigue test were carried out on scarfed lap joints (SLJ) using in airfoil siding to explore the effect of structural details, such as rows of rivets, lap angles, on its fatigue performance. Finite element (FE) analysis was employed to explore the effect of lap angle on load transfer and the stress evolution around the rivet hole. At last, the fatigue lives were predicted by nominal stress approach and critical plane approach. Both of the test results and predicted results showed that fatigue life of SLJ was remarkably increased after introducing lap angle into the faying surface. Specimen with the lap angle of $1.68^{\circ}$ exhibits the best fatigue performance in the present study.
