  • The stability constants for lanthanides complexes with optically active L-proline (1 : 1) were determined in aqueous solution in the ionic medium of 0.1 M $NaClO_4$ at 25$^{\circ}C$ using a pH titration method. The results show called "gadolinium break" between lighter and heavier lanthanides. The linear relation between the stability constant (log$\beta$1) and the pKa values of ligands indicates that L-proline acts as a bidentate ligand in the complexation. The thermodynamic parameters (${\Delta}H$ and ${\Delta}S$) were also determined using an enthalpy titration method at the same condition. The positive endothermic enthalpy change and positive entropy change clearly indicate that the driving force for the complexation is an entropy effect. The comparison of the thermodynamic parameters of L-proline complexes with anthranilate complexes supports the conclusion that the heterocyclic nitrogen atom and carboxylate of L-proline are involved in the chleate formation. The enthalpy values for L-proline are more positive than the ones for anthranilate complex. The difference in enthalpy change for the complex formation between L-proline complex and anthranilate complex is explained in terms of the basicity of the nitrogen donor atom in the ligand. The relatively large entropy change may be described by the extra dehydration related to the rigidity of L-proline ring.

  • The thermodynamic parameters (${\Delta}$G, ${\Delta}$H and ${\Delta}$S) of lanthanides(III)-benzoylformate complexes in aqueous solution have been determined in the ionic medium of 0.1M $NaClO_4$ at 25$^{\circ}C$, using pH and enthalpy titration method. The stability constants of the lanthanide(III)-benzoylformate complexes (1 : 1) agree well with the general relationships for the bidentate ligands (e.g., log${\beta}_1$ vs. p$K_a$). Thermodynamic evidences show that the oxygen atom in ketone group is coordinated along with the carboxylate group. It is ascribed to the increasing charge density on the oxygen atom in ketone group due to the conjugation effect in the benzoylformate ligand. Thermodynamic results also indicate that the complexes are stabilized by the enthalpy effect caused by the ionic interaction of metal-oxygen bond as well as the entropy effect.

  • Macroacyclic transition metal complexes such as $Cu(H_2L[A]).H_2O$, $Cu(H_2L[B]).H_2O$, CuFe(L[A]($NO_3$).$4H_2O$, CuFe(L[B])($NO_3$).$4H_2O$, [$CuGd(H_2L[A])(NO_3)_2](NO_3).2CH_3OH$, [CuGd($H_2L$[B])($NO_3)_2$]($NO_3).2CH_3OH were prepared from the corresponding hexadentate compartmental ligands, $H_4L[A]$ and $H_4L[B]$, which were obtained by the condensation of 2-hydroxy-3-hydroxymethy1-5-methyIbenzaldehyde(HHNNB) and ethylenediamine or l,3-diaminopropane. Ln-macrocyclic([20]DOTA) complexes,[Ln([20]DOTA)($NO_3)(H_2O)$]($NO_3$)2.$xH_2O${Ln(III)=Pr, Sm, Gd, Dy, which had been synthesized from 2,6-diformyl-p-cresol(DFPC), was placed in methanol for 2 days, and [Ln([20] DOTA)($NO_3)(CH_3OH)]^{2+}$ was formed The equilibrium constants (k) for the substitution of coordinated $CH_3OH$ in the Ln-[20]DOTA complexes by various bidentate auxiliary ligands, $L_a$(=o-phenylenediamine,1,10-phenanthroline, ethylenediamine, oxalicacid, malonic acid, acethylacetone) were determined by spectroscopic method at $25^{\circ}C$ and 0.1M $NaClO_4$.The pKa of auxiliary ligands is in the order of o-phenylenediamine < 1,10-phenanthroline < ethylene-diamine, oxalic acid < malonic acid < acethylacetone. However, the equilibrium constant(K) has shown thetrend of ethyleneiamine < 1,10-phenanthroline < o-phenylenediamine, acethylacetone < malonic acid < oxalic acid.

  • Direct preparative method of 2,6-diformyl-p-cresol and 2-hydroxy-3-hydroxy-5-methylbenzaldehyde from 2,6-bis(hydroxymethyl)-4-methylphenol using activated $Mn(IV)O_2$ was described. Hexadentate compartmental Iigands, $H_4L[A]\;and\; H_4L[B]$ were prepared by condensation reactions of 2-hydroxy-3-hydroxy methyl-5-methylbenzaldehyde with ethylenediamine and 1,3-diaminopropane respectively. By the reaction of macrocycle($H_4[20]DOTA$) with Ln(III) nitrate {Ln(III)=Pr, Sm, Cd, Dy }, discrete mononuclear Ln(III) complexes of the type $[Ln(H_2[20]DOTA)(ClO_4)(H_2O)]\;{\cdot}\;3H_2O$ were synthesized in the solid state. $[Ln([20]DOTA)(NO_3)(H_2O)](NO_3)_2\;{\cdot}\;xH_2O$ was placed in methanol for 2 days, and $[Ln([20]DOTA)(NO_3)(CH_3OH)]^{2+}$ was formed. The equilibrium constants(K) for the substitution of coordinated $CH_3OH$ in the Ln-[20]DOTA complexes by various auxiliary ligand, $L_a$(=salicylic acid, p-chlorobenzoic acid, benzoic acid, acetic acid, 4-bromophenol) were determined spectroscopically at 25$^{\circ}C$ and 0.1M $NaClO_4$. The K values calculated were in the order of salicylic acid > p-chlorobenzoic acid > benzoic acid > acetic acid > 4-bromophenol, while pKa of auxiliary ligands was in the opposite trend.

  • Eight-coordinate tetrakis molybdenum(IV) complexes containing 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxyquinolinol(Hdcq) and 2-mercaptopyrimidine(Hmpd) has been prepared. $Mo(mpd)_4$, $Mo(dcq)(mpd)_3$, $Mo(dcq)_2(mpd)_2$, $Mo(dcq)_3(mpd)$ and $Mo(dcq)_4$ complexes have been isolated by thin-layer chromatography on silicagel plates. These complexes have been charaterized by $^1H-nmr$ spectrum and UV-Vis. spectrum. The chemical shift values of the protons ${\alpha}$ to the nitrogen in the ligands are shifted to down field. The relative intensities of the peaks which are positioned at the same proton of $Mo(dcq)(mpd)_3$ and $Mo(dcq)_3(mpd)$ are observed in 2:1 ratio, in case of $Mo(dcq)_2(mpd)_2$ appears in approximately a 1:1 ratio. The stereochemistry of the complexes in discussed in terms of their nmr spectrum and Orgel's rule. By vertue of the intensities (${\varepsilon}$>10,000~25,000) the low energy($16,600{\sim}19,800cm^{-1}$) bands are observed for the electronic spectra of the complexes are assigned as charge transfer bands.
