  • This study was aimed to characterize non-point source (NPS) pollutant runoff and estimate event mean concentrations (EMCs) from a small rural watershed located at the headwater area of the Gyeongan stream. The study watershed consists of the two major landuse, forest (72 %) and paddy field (28 %). The nine rainfall events ranging from 18.5 to 192.6 mm in amount were monitored in this study. Stream flow was measured at the watershed outlet using a water level gauge, while a number of water samples for each event were collected and analysed for water quality. Event pollutant loads varied greatly depending on rainfall events varying from 22.6 to 3,134.2 mg/L, 0.32 to 24.56 mg/L, 0.090 to 1.320 mg/L, and 2.3 to 149.8 mg/L for SS, TN, TP, and COD, correspondently. The respective mean EMCs were estimated by 104.2, 1.00, 0.168, and 7.9 mg/L. The Pearson correlation analysis showed that COD EMC was significantly correlated with those of SS, TN, and TP. Rainfall runoff ratio appeared to be negatively correlated with EMCs of SS, TP, and COD, although not statistically significant. The event loads from the largest rainfall was greater than the sum of those from the remaining eight events. The study results suggest that the appropriate management of intensified storm events are of greater importance in curbing NPS loads, while the estimated EMCs provide base data for the unit pollutant loads determination for the forest-paddy composite upstream watershed.

  • Remote sensing technique is a probable means to estimate distribution of actual evapotranspiration in connection with regional characteristics of vegetation and landuse. The factors controlling evapotranspiration from ground surface are air temperature, humidity, wind, radiation, soil moisture and so on. Not only the vegetation influences directly the evapotranspiration, but also these factors strongly influences the vegetation growth at the area. Therefore, it can be expected that evapotranspiration is highly correlated to vegetation condition. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) showed excellent ability to get the vegetation information. The NDVI is obtained using NOAA/AVHRR have been studied as a tool for vegetation monitoring. In this paper, a simple method to estimate actual avapotranspiration is proposed based on vegetation and meteorological data.

  • This study used GIS method for the characteristic analysis of farmstead location in study area. The present study surveyed the coordinates of location for 76 livestock farmsteads with big size in rural areas within city of Cheonan. Based on the surveyed data, this study analyzed the spatial characteristics of location for the farmsteads by using both new evaluation criteria and their corresponding GIS (geographic information system) layers developed in this research. The criteria consist of six factors, which are 2 geographic factors for slope(SLO) and aspect(ASP) of earth surface, 3 accessability factors for distance from water area(DWA), road(DRO), and built-up area(DBA), including type of landuse(TLA). In the analysis results of six criteria using the grid funcations of GIS, the highest distributed ratios of the farmsteads per criterion were found at the lower slope area less then 2% in SLO, the area with south and south-east direction in ASP, the area with distance between 500m and 1,000m in both DWA and DRO, the area within 500m in DWA, and the paddy and upland area in TLA. As new finding of this study, these analysis results seemed that the farmsteads have been located at the better places with the priority to build and manage conveniently and economically.

  • A new methodology for selecting spatially variable model control parameter values through consideration of inference models within a Hydroinformatic system has been developed to overcome problems associated with determination of spatially variable control parameter values for both ungauged and gauged catchment. The adopted Hydroinformatic tools for determination of control parameter values were a GIS(Arc/Info) to handle spatial and non-spatial attribute information, the SWMM(stormwater management model) to simulate catchment response to hydrologic events, and lastly, L_BFGS_B(a limited memory quasi-Newton algorithm) to assist in the calibration process. As a result, high accuracy of control parameter estimation was obtained by considering the spatial variations of the control parameters based on landuse characteristics. Also, considerable time and effort necessary for estimating a large number of control parameters were reduced from the new calibration approach.

  • Many methods have been used to estimate evapotranspiration. However, there is little information about the evapotranspiration from river basins with complicated topographies and variable land use. Remote sensing technique is a probable means to estimate distribution of the evapotranspiration in connection with regional characteristics of vegetation and landuse. The evapotranspiration not only depends on meteorological circumstances but also on the condition of the vegetation. The latter effect can be expressed in terms of NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) obtained by NOAA/AVHRR datasets. In this paper, a simple method to estimate evapotranspiration of the Keum river basin is proposed based on NDVI and temperature data.

  • Public spaces in the cities are social and economic resources to maintain sustainable urban revitalization. As an importance of public spaces is getting increased, many cities focus on public space management and introduce their own management system. NYC Plaza Program is one of the public space management systems in USA and it was designed in order to transform underused roads and streets into pedestrian public spaces throughout the New York City. Plaza management system works with private organizations' participation as NYC Department of Transportation empowers selected private organizations to the right of management and assists their efforts. In this study, we focused on how the plazas are managed by private sectors and seek to find out characteristics of types of management methods based on landuse(residential, commercial and openspace) status around plazas. We analyzed 61 plazas that generated by NYC Plaza Program with three major conditions of management system including organization, fund and activities. There are three major findings from the analysis. 1)In most residential surrounded plazas, resident-initiative organizations manage small scaled fund and activities meanwhile public agencies support their management. 2)BID is a dominant tool in the commercial surrounded plazas. BID provides with secured fund, mid-sized activities and a broad network with commercial facilities. 3)Openspace-surrounded types are usually using supports of exiting organizations and fund system.

  • In this study, a fully distributed physical-based rainfall-runoff model called Vflo$^{TM}$ is applied to Junglang-cheon basin for simulating runoff. Geo-spatial data are used to parameterize the model to account for the characteristics of soils, landuse/cover, and topograph. 300m resolution DEM is used to compute slope and drainage network connectivity. Spatially distributed rainfall data is interpolated by ordinary kriging method. In this study, hydrograph from HEC-HMS and Vflo$^{TM}$ without/with calibration of parameters was compared to evaluate the accuracy of rainfall-runoff model From the results, a fully distributed physical-based rainfall-runoff model reproduce the peak time and shape of hydrograph much better than HEC-HMS.

  • In general, nonpoint pollutant of a watershed is drained out in the form of storm water runoff during rainfall events. As the bulk of the nonpoint pollutant is in adsorbed form on particulate matters, in order to understand the behavior of nonpoint pollutant it is essential to grasp the characteristics of particulate matters in rainfall runoff. Though, previous studies for the relationship between the runoff characteristics of pollutants and the size distribution of particulate matters are very rare. In this study, a small non-urbanized area (basin area of 52.8 ha) with various landuse types including paddy, dry fields and forest was selected and investigated in detail for the runoff properties of each pollutant during several rainfall events. The correlation and effects between particulate matters and nonpoint pollutant were analyzed quantitatively. As a result, the significant first flush was observed on each event and it became clear that fine particulate matters ($80{\mu}m$ or less) has contributed in the runoff process of nutrients and heavy metals. Organic matters ($BOD_5$, TOC), nutrients (TN, TP) and several heavy metals (Al, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg and Zn) represented high correlations with SS (total), VSS, SS (d < $20{\mu}m$) and SS ($20{\mu}m$ $$\leq_-$$ d < $80{\mu}m$). On the other hand, $COD_{cr}$, Cd, Mn and Pb did not show clear correlations with the behavior of particulate matters. Therefore, we have to examine the introduction of nonpoint pollution mitigation facilities considering the facts that nonpoint pollutant runoff process has high correlation with the behavior of particulate matters and is changeable based on the target pollutants.

  • To analyze the bird communities by the land use type, we surveyed 43 plots in Siheung City, Korea from Mar. 2009 to Feb. 2010 and classified the community by TWINSPAN and DCA. Classification result by TWINSPAN was classified into 4 communities. In the first division, waterbirds, such as spot-billed duck(Anas poecilorhyncha) and great egret(Egretta alba) operated as the differential species. In the second and third division, little grebe(Tachybaptus ruficollis) and eurasian sparrow(Passer montanus) were operated as the differential species. The relationship between land use types and classified bird communities, all plots of community I were located in the forest. Community II plots were contained all urban and several semi-natural land use types. Community III contains stream and rice paddy. Plots in the reservoir were classified community IV. The stream and rice paddy were classified into different communities, which were colsely related with the size of wetland paddy. Community III had the highest species diversity index and community II had lowest. Community III also had the highest maximum species diversity index and evenness index. The result of this study, small stream and small rice paddy located within the city have insignificant characteristics as the habitat for birds. Management size of semi-natural land use for wildbird habitat in the urban area should be considered for showing their habitat characteristics. If the classification of biotope type based on the scale of rice paddy and urban park and the type of landuse type in the riverside then we should be consider the standard of minium area.

  • To distinguish the anthropogenic inputs from the chemical weathering with water-rock interaction on the chemical compositons of groundwater in Kwangju city, four different water groups were established based on the landuse type, lithology and topology. The sample from greenbelt area belongs to Group Ⅰ, whereas those from green buffer zone, urban area and industrial area belong to Group II, Group Ⅲ and Group Ⅳ, respectively. The geology of this city mainly consists of biotite granite and granitic gneiss. The concentration of main cations is subject to the behavior of feldspars, micas and carbonate minerals. Cl$\^$-/ and NO$_3$$\^$-/ are supplied by anthropogenic inputs such as domestic sewage whose concentration of these anions is highest in the Group Ⅲ samples. With the Piper diagram, the groundwaters of Group Ⅲ are mainly plotted in CaSO$_4$-CaCl$_2$ type, whereas those of other groups are plotted in Ca(HCO$_3$)$_2$ type, The calculation for the activities of ions and saturation indices of some minerals shows that most of the minerals are undersaturated and plotted in the area of equlibrium with kaolinite. Three factors were extracted from the factor analysis for chemical data. Factor 1 controlled by HCO$_3$$\^$-/, Ca$\^$2-/, SO$_4$$\^$2-/, Mg$\^$2+/ and Na$\^$+/, explains the dissolution of carbonate minerals. mica and plagioclase. Factor 2, controlled by Cl$\^$-/ and NO$_3$$\^$-/, explains the influence of artificial pollution. Factor 3, controlled by Mn, Fe and Zn is subject to the industrial waste water, but the evidence is not clear. Factor 1 is dominant in the Group I and II, indicating that those samples are subjected to natural chemical weathering, The higher scores of factor 2 in the Group Ⅲ samples indicate the potential artificial pollution.
