Recent global warming and anthropogenic activities have caused more frequent and massive wildfires with longer durations and more significant damages. MODIS has been monitoring global wildfires for almost 20 years, and GK2A and Himawari-8 are observing the wildfires in East Asia 144 times a day. However, the spatial resolution of 1 to 2 km is not sufficient for the detection of small and medium-size active fires, and therefore the studies on the active fire detection using high-resolution images are essential. However, there is no official product for the high-resolution active fire detection. Hence, we implemented the active fire detection algorithm of Landsat 8 and carried out a high-resolution-based detection of active fires in Australia in 2019, followed by the comparisons with the products of Himawari-8 and MODIS. Regarding the intense fires, the three satellites showed similar results, whereas the weak igniting and extinguishing fires or the fires in narrow areas were detected by only Landsat 8 with a 30m resolution. Small-sized fires, which are the majority in Korea, can be detected by the high-resolution satellites such as Landsat 8, Sentinel-2, Kompsat-3A, and the forthcoming Kompsat-7. Also, a comprehensive analysis together with the geostationary satellites in East Asia such as GK2A, Himawari-8, and Fengyun-3 will help the interoperability and the improvement of spatial and temporal resolutions.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the use of RADARSAT and Landsat TM data for the monitoring of rice growth. The relationships between backscatter coefficients($\sigma$$^{0}$ ) of RADARSAT data and digital numbers (DN) of Landsat TM and rice growth parameters were investigated. Radar backscatter coefficients were calculated by calibration process and then compared with rice growth parameters; plant height, leaf area index (LAI), and fresh and dry biomass. When radar backscatter coefficient ($\sigma$$^{0}$ ) of rice was expressed as a function of time, it is shown that the increasing trend ranged from -22--20dB to -9--8dB as growth advances. The temporal variation of backscatter coefficient was significant to interpret rice growth. According to the relationship between leaf area index and backscatter coefficient, backscatter coefficient underestimated leaf area index at the beginning of life history and overestimated, at the reproductive stage. The same increasing trend between biomass and backscatter coefficient was shown. From these results, RADARSAT data appear positive to the monitoring of rice growth. Each band of time-series Landsat TM data had a significant trend as a rice crop grows during its life cycle. Spectral indices, NDVI[(TM4-TM3)/(TM4+TM3)] and RVI(TM4/TM2), derived from Landsat TM equivalent bands had the same trend as leaf area index.

We have analyzed surface water temperature and seasonal stratification of lakes in the Han river system using time-series Landsat images and in situ measurement data. Using NASA equation, at-satellite temperature is derived from 29 Landsat-5 TM and Landsat-7 ETM+ images obtained from 1994 to 2004, and was compared with in situ surface temperature on river-type dam lakes such as Paro, Chuncheon, Euiam, Chongpyong, Paldang, and with 10m-depth temperature on lake-type dam lake Soyang. Although the in situ temperature at the time of satellite data acquisition was interpolated from monthly measurements, the number of images with standard deviation of temperature difference (at-satellite temperature - in situ interpolated temperature) less than $2^{\circ}C$ was 24 on which a novel statistical atmospheric correction could be applied. The correlation coefficient at Lake Soyang was 0.915 (0.950 after correction) and 0.951-0.980 (0.979-0.997 after correction) at other lakes. This high correlation implies that there exist a mixed layer in the shallow river-like dam lakes due to physical mixing from continuous influx and efflux, and the daily and hourly temperature change is not fluctuating. At Lake Soyang, an anomalous temperature difference was observed from April to July where at-satellite temperature is $3-5^{\circ}C$ higher than in situ interpolated temperature. Located in the uppermost part of the Han river system and its influx is governed only by natural precipitation, Lake Soyang develops stratification during this time with rising sun elevation and no physical mixture from influx in this relatively dry season of the year.
Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied for regional geological mapping to a multivariate data set of the Landsat TM data in the heavily vegetated and topographically rugged Chungju area. The multivariate data set selection was made by statistical analysis based on the magnitude of regression of squares in multiple regression, and it includes R1/2/R3/4, R2/3, R5/7/R4/3, R1/2, R3/4. R4/3. AND R4/5. As a result of application of PCA, some of later principal components (in this study PC 3 and PC 5) are geologically more significant than earlier major components, PC 1 and PC 2 herein. The earlier two major components which comprise 96% of the total information of the data set, mainly represent reflectance of vegetation and topographic effects, while though the rest represent 3% of the total information which statistically indicates the information unstable, geological significance of PC3 and PC5 in the study implies that application of the technique in more favorable areas should lead to much better results.
The environment in urban are becoming worse and forest is being recognized the major part of city by the increase of population and facilities. This study was carried out to analyze topographic environment as the basis for reasonable management and utility of forest situated in Taejon city and its vicinities using Sandst-5 TM and digital terrain elevation data(DTED). Forest area was extracted by Landsat-5 TM data. Distribution of elevation, slope and aspect was derived from digital terrain elevation data. The research area to analyze ropographic environment for urban forest were Bomumsan, Bongsan, Kabhasan, Sikchangsan, and Kyechoksan. Forest, the largest area in Taejon covers 55.1% of totaf area. This is more 5 times than urban area. 70.8% of forest area in Taejon city is located in elevation of lower than 200m and 4.8% of that is located in elevation of upper than 400m. Distribution of elevation is 45.7% of total area for 100m to 200m in Kyechoksan and is 92.4% of total area for lower than 300m in Bomumsan. Elevation of upper than 300m is 20.4% of total area in Kabhasan and is 46.6% of total area in Sikchangsan. The slope of more 20 digree is over 50% of total area in every area except for Bonsan and 35.2% of total area in Sikchangsan and Kahasan than in Bomumsan and Kyechoksan.
This study presents a correlation between timber Age, image bands and vegetation indices for timber age estimation. Basically, this study used Landsat TM images of three difference years (1994, 1994, 1998) and difference between Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and National Elevation Dataset (NED). Bands of 4, 5 and 7, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Infrared Index (II), Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) and Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SA VI) were obtained from Landsat TM images. Tasseled cap - greenness and wetness images were also made by Tasseled cap transformation. Finally, analysis of correlation between timber age, difference between Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and National Elevation Dataset (NED), individual TM bands (4, 5, 7), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Tasseled cap-Greenness, Wetness, Infrared Index (II), Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) and Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) using regression model. In this study about 1,992 datasets were analyzed. The Tasseled cap - Wetness, Infrared Index (II) and Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) showed close correlation for timber age estimation.

Recently, environmental issues such as climate warming, ozone layer depletion, reduction of tropical forests and desertification are emerging as global environmental problems beyond national problems. And international attention and effort have been carried out in many ways to solve these problems. In this study, the growth of green was calculated quantitatively using the technique of remote sensing and temperature change was figured out through temperature extraction in the city. The land-cover changes and thermal changes for research areas were analyzed using Landsat TM images on May 2002 and May 2009. Surface temperature distribution was calculated using spectral degree of brightness of Band 6 that was Landsat TM thermal infrared sensor to extract the ground surface temperature in the city. As a result of research, the area of urban green belt was increased by $2.87km^2$ and the ground surface temperature decreased by $0.6^{\circ}C{\sim}0.8^{\circ}C$ before and after tree planting projects. Henceforth, if the additional study about temperature of downtown is performed based on remote sensing and measurement data, it will contribute to solve the problems about the urban environment.

In this study, effective multispectral Landsat TM band combinations for a merging with the high resolution IRS-1C PAN data using the IHS method to improve landuse accuracy is discussed. From the pre-classified image using the merged images with TM all six band images(with the exception of band 6 image) and PAN image, a sample data which has ten classes was generated. An evaluation of the overall classification accuracy for the representative seven merged images which were merged using each TM three-band images and IRS-1C PAN image by IHS method for the sample area. The increase in classification accuracy is most significant with the inclusion of two of TM4, TM5 and TM7 infrared band images. Especially, the largest increase(11.8 percent) in landuse classification accuracy were investigated when Landsat TM247 bands were merged with IRS-1C PAN data. The classification accuracy when TM three band image and PAN image were used without merging is higher than result of the case of using the merged images.
