  • Spatial information on forest biomass is an important factor to evaluate the capability of forest as a carbon sequestrator and is a core independent variable required to drive models which describe ecological processes such as carbon budget, hydrological budget, and energy flow. The objective of this study is to understand the relationship between satellite image and field data, and to quantitatively estimate and map the spatial distribution of forest biomass. Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) derived vegetation indices and field survey data were applied to estimate the biomass distribution of mountainous forest located in Gwangneung Experimental Forest (230 ha). Field survey data collected from the ground plots were used as the dependent variable, forest biomass, while satellite image reflectance data (Band 1~5 and Band 7), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), and RVI (Ratio Vegetation Index) were used as the independent variables. The mean and total biomass of Gwangneung catchment area were estimated to be about 229.5 ton/ha and $52.8{\times}10^3$ tons respectively. Regression analysis revealed significant relationships between the measured biomass and Landsat derived variables in both of deciduous forest ($R^2=0.76$, P < 0.05) and coniferous forest ($R^2=0.75$, P < 0.05). However, there still exist many uncertainties in the estimation of forest ecosystem parameters based on vegetation remote sensing. Developing remote sensing techniques with adequate filed survey data over a long period are expected to increase the estimation accuracy of spatial information of the forest ecosystem.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate hydrological impact by the land cover change of typhoon damage. For the typhoon RUSA (rainfall 1,402 mm) occurred in 2002 (August $31\;{\sim}$ September 1), satellite images of Landsat 7 ETM+ of September 29, 2000 and Landsat 5 TM of September 11, 2002 were selected, and each land cover was classified for Namdae-cheon watershed $192.7km^2$ located in the middle-eastern part of Korea Peninsula. SCS unit hydrograph for watershed runoff and Muskingum for streamflow routing of WMS HEC-1 was adopted. 30m resolution DEM & hydrological soil group using 1:50,000 soil map were prepared. The model was calibrated using three available data of storm events of 1985 to 1988 based on 1985 land cover condition. To predict the streamflow change by damaged land cover condition, rainfall of 50 years to 500 years frequency were generated using 2nd quantile of Huff method. The damaged land cover condition treated as bare soil surface increased streamflow of $50.1\;m^3/sec$ for 50 years rainfall frequency and $67.6\;m^3/sec$ for 500 years rainfall frequency based on AMC-I condition. There may be some speedy treatment by the government for the next coming typhoon damage.

  • Yeongjong-do is seventh largest island in the west coast of Korea which is 4.8 km away in the direction of south-west from Incheon. The mudflat area around the Yeongjong-do has variable dimension according to tide level. In addition, Yeongjong-do is important area with high environmental value as wintering sites for migratory birds. The mudflat of Yeongjong-do is also meaningful region because it is used as place of education and tourist attraction. But, there are increasing concerns about preservation of mudflat area caused by artificial development such as land reclamation project and Incheon airport construction. In this paper, mudflat area was detected using Landsat 7 ETM+ images that United States Geological Survey (USGS) is providing the data in 16 days period. The false color composite was made from band 7, 5, and 3 that could dividing boundary between water and land for the purpose of appearance of boundary line in mudflat region. This area was calculated using results of classification based on false color composite images and was digitized through repetitive algorithm during research of period. Therefore, the change of northeastern area in Yeongjong-do was detected according to tide level during 16 years from 2000 to 2015 on the basis of providing period at tide station. This paper will expect as indicator for range of area in same tide level prior to the start of the research for preservation of mudflat. It will be also scientific grounds about change of mudflat area caused by artificial development.

  • To investigate the streamflow impact of land cover changes by a typhoon, WMS HEC-1 storm runoff model was applied by using land cover information before and after the typhoon. The model was calibrated with three storm events of 1985 to 1988 based on 1985 land cover condition for a 192.7 $km^2$ watershed in northeast coast of South Korea. After the model was tested, it was run to estimate impacts of land cover change by the typhoon RUSA occurred in 2002 (31 August - 1 September) with 897.5 mm rainfall. The land covers before and after the typhoon were prepared using Landsat 7 ETM+ of September 11 of 2000 and Landsat 5 TM of September 29 of 2002 respectively. For the 6.9 $km^2$ damaged area (3.6 % of the watershed), the peak runoff and total runoff by the changed land cover condition increased 12.5 % and 12.7 % for 50 years rainfall frequency and 1.4 % and 1.8 % for 500 years rainfall frequency respectively based on AMC (Antecedent Moisture Condition)-I condition.

  • The main purpose of this study was to estimate a new regression model to explain the relationship between urban forest and air temperature in summer, 2001. This study consists of two parts: correlation coefficient analysis and regression analysis. According to correlation coefficient analysis, thermal infra-red radiations of the major land use categories found significant difference in each category. However there were no significant relationship between the data (thermal infra-red radiation and NDVI) derived from Landsat-7 ETM+ image and air temperature at Automatic Weather Stations(AWSs). After estimating various regression models for summer air temperature, the final models were chosen. The final regression models consisted of two variables such as forest m and traffic facilities area. The regression models explained over 78% of the variability in air temperatures. The regression models with variables of forest area and traffic facilities area showed that the coefficient of the first variable was even more significant than the second one. However, the negative impact of the traffic facilities area was slightly greater than the positive impact of the forest area. Consequently, the effects of forest area and traffic facilities area were apparent to explain summer air temperature in Seoul. Therefore two policies have the most important implications to mitigate the summer air temperature in Seoul: to expand and to conserve the urban forest; and to change the Oafnc facilities'characteristics. The results from this study are expected to be useful not merely in informing the public that urban forest mitigates summer air temperahne, but in urging the necessity of budgets for trees and managing urban forests. It is recommended that field swey of summer air temperature be Performed for the vadidation of the models. • The primary objective of this study is to develop a suitable methodology to generate forest leaf area index (LAI) map at regional and local scales. To build empirical models, we collected the LAI values at 30 sample plots over the forest within the kyongan watershed area by the field measurements using an optical instrument. Landsat-7 ETM+ multispectral data obtained at the same growing season with the field LAI measurement were used. Three datasets of remote sensing signal were prepared for analyzing the relationship with the field measured LAI value and they include raw DN, atmospherically corrected reflectance, and topographically corrected reflectance. From the correlation analysis and regression model development, we found that the radiometric correction of topographic effects was very critical step to increase the sensitivity of the multispectral reflectance to LAI. In addition, the empirical model to generate forest LAI map should be separately developed for each of coniferous and deciduous forest.
