The aim of this study was to identify land resources because food production and supply in North Korea have been at risk due to variations in its seasonal climate. More than three-fifths of the soils are locally derived from the weathering of granitic rocks or various kinds of schists developed from crystalline rocks. Well-developed reddish brown soils derived from limestone are found in the North Hwanghae province and in the southern part of the South Pyeongan province. Additionally, a narrow strip of similarly fertile land runs through the eastern seaboard of the Hamgyong and Kangwon Provinces. The loss of clay particles and organic matter are major causes of degradation in the soil physical and chemical properties in North Korea. 75% of the areas converted from forests became croplands, and 69% of the land converted to croplands came from forests. The net forest loss was quite small from the 1990s to the 2000s. However, deforestation in areas with a slightly lower elevation and gentler slope between 1997 and 2014 led to severe soil erosion resulting in a drastic change in the physical and chemical properties of the soil which influenced cropland stability and productivity. Therefore, the drastic changes in land cover as well as in the physical and chemical properties of the soil caused by various geographical features have seriously influenced the productivity of crops in North Korea.

As the urbanization ratio increases, the heat environment in cities is becoming more important due to the urban heat island. In this study, the heat island spatial analysis was calculated and conducted for analysis of urban thermal environment of Sejong city, which was launched in 2012 and has been developed rapidly. To analyze the ratio and change rate of urban area, a multi temporal land cover map (2013 to 2015 and 2017) of study area is generated based on Landsat-8 OLI/TIRS (Operational Land Imager / Thermal Infrared Sensor) satellite imagery. Then, we select an TIR (Thermal Infrared) band from the two TIR bands provided by the Landsat-8, which is used for calculating the heat island potential, through the accuracy evaluation of the brightness temperature and AWS (Automatic Weathering Station) data. Based on the selected band and surface emissivity, land surface temperature is calculated and the estimated heat island potential change is analyzed. As a result, the land surface temperature of the high ratio and change rate of urban area was significantly higher than the surrounding area around $3^{\circ}C$ to $4^{\circ}C$, and the heat island potential was also higher around $4^{\circ}C$ to $5^{\circ}C$. However, the heat island phenomenon was alleviated in urban areas with high rate of change that also show high green area ratio. Therefore, we demonstrated that dense urban area increases the possibility of inducing heat island, but it can mitigate the heat island through green areas.

The purpose of this study is to assess the hydrological impact on a watershed from long-term land cover changes. Gyeongan-cheon watershed($558.2km^2$) was selected and WMS(watershed modeling system) HEC-1 model was adopted as an evaluation tool. To identify land cover changes, five Landsat images(1980/2/15, 1986/4/15, 1990/4/26, 1996/4/26, 2000/5/17) were selected and analyzed using maximum likelihood method. As a result, urban areas have increased by 5.6% and forest areas have decreased by 6.1% between 1980 and 2000. SCS curve number increased by 9.8. To determine model parameters and evaluate HEC-1 model, five storm events(1998/5/2, 1998/8/23, 1998/9/30, 1999/5/3, 2000/7/29) were used. The simulated stream flow agreed well with the observed one with relative errors ranging from 9% to 36%. For 254 mm daily rainfall of 30 years frequency, due to the increase of urban areas peak flow increased by $455m^3/sec$ and the time of peak flow reduced about four hours for 20 years land cover changes.
The importance of monitoring and assessing the status of urban forests in the aspect of urban forest management is emerging as urban forest edges increase due to urbanization and human impacts. The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of vegetation condition of urban forest edge that is affected by different land cover types using $NDVI_{max}$ images derived from FSDAF (Flexible Spatio-temporal DAta Fusion). Among 4 land cover types, roads had the greatest effect on the forest edge, especially up to 30m, and it was found to affect up to 90m in Seoul urban forest. It was also found that $NDVI_{max}$ increased with distance away from the forest edge. The results of this study are expected to be useful for assessing the effects of land cover types and land cover change on forest edges in terms of urban forest monitoring and urban forest management.

Recently, it has been important not only to evaluate environmental effects but also to assess cumulative and comprehensive effects by the development projects. This paper concentrates on temporal and spatial cumulative impacts on Suji district in Yongin, Gyunggi-do. This paper adopted two methods to assess the cumulative impacts. First, it assesses the temporal change of forest patch size and land cover according to the patch size. Second, it compares housing development zones with the neighborhood. The result of the research appears that the damage is very serious, especially in small forest. The Forest area is changed to farm land, most of them become to built-up area later. In addition, it is assessed that the secondary housing development projects did more harm than the initial one. By assessing the cumulative impacts on Suji district, this research suggests to minimize two kinds of solutions : comprehensive environmental assessments in regional unit and regulation on total forest quantity.

Recently, a lot of damages have been caused by urban flooding, and heavy rainfall that temporarily occur are the main causes of these phenomenons. The damages caused by urban flooding are identified as the change in the water balance in urban areas. To indirectly identify it, this research analyzed the change in the remote sensing indices on each land cover before and after heavy rainfall by utilizing daily precipitation data and multi-temporal Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. Cases of heavy rain advisory and warning were selected based on the daily precipitation data. And statistical fluctuation were compared by acquiring Sentinel-2 satellite images during the corresponding period and producing them as NDVI, NDWI and NDMI images about each land cover with a radius of 1,000 m based on the Seoul Weather Station. As a result of analyzing the maximum value, minimum value, mean and fluctuation of the pixels that were calculated in each remote sensing index image, there was no significant changes in the remote sensing indices in urban areas before and after heavy rainfall.

In this study, the impacts of local meteorology caused by tidal changes in the West Sea on ozone distributions in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) were analyzed using a meteorological model (WRF) and an air quality (CMAQ) model. This study was carried out during the day (1200-1800 LST) between August 3 and 9, 2016. The total area of tidal flats along with the tidal changes was calculated to be approximately $912km^2$, based on data provided by the Environmental Geographic Information Service (EGIS) and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF). Modeling was carried out based on three experiments, and the land cover of the tidal flats for each experiment was designed using the coastal wetlands, water bodies (i.e., high tide), and the barren or sparsely vegetated areas (i.e., low tide). The land cover parameters of the coastal wetlands used in this study were improved in the herbaceous wetland of the WRF using updated albedo, roughness length, and soil heat capacity. The results showed that the land cover variation during high tide caused a decrease in temperature (maximum $4.5^{\circ}C$) and planetary boundary layer (PBL) height (maximum 1200 m), and an increase in humidity (maximum 25%) and wind speed (maximum $1.5ms^{-1}$). These meteorological changes increased the ozone concentration (about 5.0 ppb) in the coastal areas including the tidal flats. The increase in the ozone concentration during high tide may be caused by a weak diffusion to the upper layer due to a decrease in the PBL height. The changes in the meteorological variables and ozone concentration during low tide were lesser than those occurring during high tide. This study suggests that the meteorological variations caused by tidal changes have a meaningful effect on the ozone concentration in the SMA.
Water level of the Tonle Sap is largely influenced by the Mekong River. During the wet season, the lacustrine landform and vegetated areas are covered with water. Change detection in this area provides information required for human activities and sustainable development around the Tonle Sap. In order to detect the changes in the Tonle Sap floodplain, fifteen ALOS-PALSAR L-band data acquired from January 2007 to January 2009 and examined in this study. Since L-band is able to penetrate into vegetation cover, it enables us to study the changes according to water level of floodplain developed in the rainforest. Four types of images were constructed and studied include 1) ratio images, 2) correlation coefficient images, 3) texture feature ratio images and 4) multi-color composite images. Change images (in each 46 day interval) extracted from the ratio images, coherence images and texture feature ratio images were formed for detecting land cover change. Two RGB images are also obtained by compositing three images acquired in the early, in the middle and at the end of the rainy season in 2007 and 2008. Combination of the methods results that the change images present the relationship between vegetation and water level, leaf fall forest as well as cultivation and harvest crop.
This research aims at suggesting the mitigation measures of decreasing pollution by analyzing land cover characteristics according to subwatershed, and non-pollutant load characteristics occurring in each subwatershed. Mushim-cheon is selected as a research area, and HyGIS-SWAT is used as a water quality model. This research analyzed outflow load characteristics by classifying land cover, which has over 50% classified items, into a city area, a farmland area and a forest area. The result shows that the yearly occurrence load quantity represents a farmland area, a forest area and a city area in order. In subwatershed-2, occurrence load quantity is analyzed by setting up a buffer zone in the center of stream, and by changing a farmland area into a natural grass land. Therefore, a farmland area in a subwatershed changes 36.6% into 27.9% and 15.3% comparing to previous land cover change. In the analysis of sediment loads occurrence quantity and nutritive salt load occurrence quantity in subwatershed-2, sediment loads occurrence quantity decreases 52% to about 47%, and nutritive salt load decreases 49% and 34% in compare with previous change. Hereafter, this research will set up the mitigation measures scenario, and find out which is more effective for the mitigation measures.
This study examined the effects of topography and buildings around the automated synoptic observing system (ASOS) on the observation environment of air temperatures and wind speeds and directions using a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) model. For this, we selected 10 ASOSs operated by the Korea Meteorological Administration. Based on the data observed at the ASOSs in August during the recent ten years, we established the initial and boundary conditions of the CFD model. We analyzed the temperature observation environment by comparing the temperature change ratios in the case considering the actual land-cover types with those assuming all land-cover types as grassland. The land-cover types around the ASOSs significantly affected the air temperature observation environment. The temperature change ratios were large at the ASOSs around which buildings and roads were dense. On the other hand, when all land covers were assumed as grassland, the temperature change ratios were small. Wind speeds and directions at the ASOSs were also significantly influenced by topography and buildings when their heights were higher or similar to the observation heights. Obstacles even located at a long distance affected the wind observation environments. The results in this study would be utilized for evaluating ASOS observation environments in the relocating or newly organizing steps.
