Binary Ti-Al alloys containing 50 to 60 atomic percent aluminum are rapidly solidified by hammer anvil method under an argon atmosphere. Constituent phases in each alloy are identified by X-ray diffractometry and microstructures of the alloys are investigated using a transmission electron microscope. In alloys with aluminum content between 50 and 54 percent, a second phase exists besides TiAl(${\gamma}$); this second phase is identified as $Ti_3Al$(${\alpha}2$). The ${\alpha}2$ phase is observed in two types of morphology. One is as fine lamellar alternating with ${\gamma}$ and the other is as a particle. It is concluded that the existence of a metastable phase with the morphologies stated above should arise from a higher quenching rate attained by the hammer anvil method as compared to the conventional roll or splat-quench method. Implications of the above observation are discussed with respect to the phase relations in the Ti-Al binary system; these implications are still controversial in many respects.
Hydrogen peroxide is being considered as a monopropellant in micropropulsion systems for the next generation of miniaturized satellites ('nanosats') due to its high energy density, modest specific impulse and green characteristics. Efforts at the University of Vermont have focused on the development of a MEMS-based microthruster that uses a novel slug flow monopropellant injection scheme to generate thrust and impulse-bits commensurate with the intended micropropulsion application. The present study is a computational effort to investigate the initial decomposition of the monopropellant as it enters the catalytic chamber, and to compare the impact of the monopropellant injection scheme on decomposition performance. Two-dimensional numerical studies of the monopropellant in microchannel geometries have been developed and used to characterize the performance of the monopropellant before vaporization occurs. The results of these studies show that monopropellant in the lamellar flow regime, which lacks a non-diffusive mixing mechanism, does not decompose at a rate that is suitable for the microthruster dimensions. In contrast, monopropellant in the slug flow regime decomposes 57% faster than lamellar flow for a given length, indicating that the monopropellant injection scheme has potential benefits for the performance of the microthruster.
In this study, Ti-X (X=Mn, Fe, Mo) powder alloys were designed and manufactured by both powder metallurgy (PM) and metal powder injection molding (MIM) process to improve strength and formability compared to CP-Ti powder materials. It was found that the lamellar microstructure consisted of α and β phases was formed in PM-processed alloys. However, MIM-processed alloys showed not the lamellar microstucture but the equiaxed α + β microstructure. It was also revealed that the contents of X component and feedstock were not affected to microstructure evolution. The reason why different microstructure was appeared between PM-processed and MIM-processed alloys is not clear yet, but supposed to be the effect of intersticial elements such as C, H and N derived from feedstock during debinding process of MIM.
Precipitation of the ordered icosahedral quasicrystal in Mg-6wt%Zn-1wt%Y alloy has been characterized by transmission electron microscopy observations. The lamellar-type icosahedral qusicrystal phases (I-phase) with the face-centered icosahedral (FCI) structure are observed in alloy after solution treatment at $550^{\circ}C$. In the alloy annealed at $400^{\circ}C$, polygon-shaped I-phases are observed in the ${\alpha}$-Mg matrix. The interfaces of the I-phase with the matrix are facetted and the facets are on five-fold and two- fold plane of the I-phase. The orientation relationship of the I-phase with the matrix is determined to be $[I5]_I//[001]_{Mg}$, $(2f)_I//(2\overline{1}0)_{Mg}$ and $[I2]_I//[311]_{Mg}$, $(5f)_I//(0\overline{1}1)_{Mg}$. The icosahedral grains are occasionally found to be twinned with one of the five-fold axis as the twin axis. The twin boundaries appear to be fairly straight and perpendicular to the fivefold twin axis. The icosahedral twin can be expressed as a rotation of $63.4^{\circ}$ or $116.62^{\circ}$ around two fold zone axis.

The formation of emulsions and micelles in water/ceramide PC104/CholE $O_{20}$/C$_{16}$E $O_{20}$ and water/ceramide PC104/CholE $O_{20}$ mixtures was investigated through the phase behavior studies. The phase diagrams showed the existence of micelle and emulsion regions in both systems. The mixed surfactant system (CholE $O_{20}$/C$_{16}$E $O_{20}$) showed the wider micellar and emulsion regions than the single surfactant system (CholE $O_{20}$). From FT-IR measurements, it was found that the polyoxyethylene (POE) groups of surfactants formed the hydrogen bonds with amido carbonyl group in ceramide PC104. This result indicated that the hydrophilic part (EO) of surfactants could stabilize the lamellar structure and emulsion of ceramide PC104. The mixed surfactant system (CholE $O_{20}$/C$_{16}$E $O_{20}$) resulted in the smaller emulsion droplet size due to the effect of curvature at the interface, thus further increasing emulsion stability. With the penetration of $C_{16}$E $O_{20}$into the interfacial layer of surfactants in emulsion, the curvature of the interface might be altered for the formation of smaller emulsion droplets. The mixed surfactant system could incorporate up to 4 wt. % of ceramide PC104 into emulsion more than single surfactant system.ystem.m.
In this study, the gravitating mechanical stir casting method was used to fabricating the Nb2O5/AZ31 magnesium matrix nanocomposites. Niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) used as reinforcement with two different weight percentages (3 wt % and 6 wt %). The influence of Nb2O5 on microstructure and mechanical properties has been investigated. The microstructure analysis showed that the composites are mainly composed of the primary α-magnesium phase and phase β-Mg17Al12 secondary phase. The secondary phase was dispersed evenly along the grain boundary of the Mg phase. The Nb2O5/AZ31 nanocomposites revealed that the grain size and its lamellar shape (β-Mg17Al12) were gradually refined. Different strengthening mechanisms were assessed in terms of their contributions. Results showed that composite material properties of hardness, yield strength, and fracture study were directly related to Nb2O5 as a reinforcement. The maximum values of the mechanical properties were achieved with the addition of 3 wt% Nb2O5 on the AZ31 alloy.

The microstructure of 95wt.%Pb/5wt.%Sn and 63wt.%Sn/37wt.%Pb solders for flip chip bonding process has been characterized. Solders were deposited by thermal evaporation and reflowed in the conventional furnace or by rapid thermal annealing(RTA) process. As-deposited films show columnar structure. The microstructure of furnace cooled 63Sn/37Pb solder shows typical lamellar form, but that of RTA treated solder has the structure showing an uniform dispersion of Pb-rich phase in Sn matrix. The grain size of 95Pb/5Sn solder reflowed in the furnace is about $5\mu\textrm{m}$, but the grain size of RTA treated solder is too small to be observed. The microstructure in 63Sn/37Pb solder bump shows the segregation of Pb phase in the Sn rich matrix regardless of reflowing method. The 63Sn/37Pb solder bump formed by RTA process shows more uniform microstructure. These result are related to the heat dissipation in the solder bump.

Theoretical and practical aspects are investigated for electrochemical behavious, plating processes and the structures of electrodeposit of Pb-Sn binary alloy plating through numerous literatures in this report. The anodic and cathodic electrode reaction mechanisms of Pb and Sn could co-deposit and make Pb-Sn alloy deposit from the results of cathode current density-cathode potential curves of Pb, Sn and Pb-Sn alloys in fluoborate solutions. The compositions of the best alloy plating solutions are obtained for the purpose of bearing, anticorrosion and solder plating. In general, the casting anodes of Pb-Sn alloys are used, but separated anodes of Pb and Sn pure metal are used in order to obtain the fine compositions of Pb-Sn alloy deposits. The electrodeposits of Pb-Sn alloy are in nonequilibrium state and saturated solid solutions. Thus, ${\beta}$-phase (Sn-phase) is precipitated by heat treatment. The texture and structure of the electrodeposit are associated with the surface energies of deposit lattice planes and with the cathode polarization. The electrodeposit of Pb-Sn alloy is shown as lamellar structure.
In the present study, microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of Ti-Fe-Sn ultrafine eutectic alloys have been investigated. Ultrafine eutectic microstructure consisting of a mixture of ${\beta}$-Ti solid solution and TiFe intermetallic compound homogeneously formed in $(Ti_{70.5}Fe_{29.5})_{100-x}Sn_x$ alloys with x = 0, 1 and 3. Addition of Sn is effective to modify the eutectic colony into the spherical shape with decreasing the lamellar spacing and colony size. This results in enhancing the macroscopic plasticity up to 3.1% of the Ti-Fe-Sn ultrafine eutectic alloys.
The reaction gel mixtures of molar composition (0.3${\sim}$2.1) $SiO_2:\;(0.10{\sim}0.50)\;CTABr:\;0.15{\sim}0.23)\;TMAOH:\;(20{\sim}100)\;H_2O$ we prepared and then aged at room temperature for a definite duration. The aged gel is reacted hydrothermally at $150^{\circ}C$ for 2 days. The pH of reaction gel during synthesis is strongly influenced by the concentration of TMAOH and silica source. The pH change affects the phase of product, which is monitored by X-ray diffractometer. With increasing the TMAOH ratio from 0.19 to 0.23, the gel becomes more basic, and the product involves more lamellar phase. At TMAOH ratio lower than 0.19, the hexagonal phase is lower with decrease of pH. The content of the lamellar phase increases at a lower $SiO_2$ concentration, and higher concentrations have a clear detrimental effect on the crystallinity ofMCM-41 due to an excess silica source. The best quality MCM-41 is synthesized from a reaction gel composition of $1.0\;SiO_2:\;0.27\;CTABr:\;0.19\;TMAOH:\;40\;H_2O$. The pH values of this gel, aged one for 24 hr, and reacted one at $150^{\circ}C$ for 2 days are 12.3, 11.5, and 10.5, respectively. Gel aging for 24 h is essential for preparing high quality MCM-41. Longer aging causes a decrease of hexagonal phase.
