  • Doam Lake is located around the pasture area and Yongpyung Resort. Because of the waste load of domestic animals, nutrient concentration of the stream is high. In this study, waste load of Doam Lake watershed is calculated, and QUAL2E model is applied to the upper part of the Songcheon to calculate the input boundary concentration of Doam Lake. And WASP5 model is applied for the water quality modeling of Doam lake. The results indicate that advanced treatment of domestic animal wastes is necessary for the lake water quality management.

  • In the summer season (June~August) during the study period of Lake Doam, average concentrations of major water quality parameters, COD, SS, TN, and TP were 4.0, 16.2, 3.129 and $0.077mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively, and Chl-a was $11.8mg\;m^{-3}$. The result has indicated that Lake Doam was a meso-eutrotrophic lake. Lake Doam data from the summer season (June~August), precipitation from 2001 to 2012, and water quality (COD, SS, TN, TP, Chl-a etc.) of seven years (2001, 2002, 2004 and 2009~2012), were statistically analyzed for long-term trends by Mann-Kendall test and Sen's slope estimator methods. The statistical results showed that precipitation, SD, COD, TN, $NO_3-N$, $NH_3-N$ and Chl-a had decreasing trends, and EC, turbidity, SS, TP and DIP had increasing trends. Suspended solids and total phosphorus were directly affected by precipitation. In the case of suspended solids, more aggressive and constructive plans need to be implemented than the current turbidity reduction project to achieve the targeted water quality ($5mg\;L^{-1}$ of SS) in Lake Doam. In particular, we need to specify a project that considers the steep topographic characteristics of high, land farming areas and precipitation conditions of the Lake Doam watershed, which can increase the efficiency of a turbidity reduction project.

  • This study was to investigate phytoplankton communities and to evaluate the effects of hydrological and physical-chemical environmental factors in major five dam reservoirs in the Han River water system. Annual average of chlorophyll a concentration in Lake Paldang, Lake Cheongpyeong and Lake Doam was higher than that of Lake Chungju and Lake Hoengseong. The opposite seasonal variation patterns of phytoplankton growth were observed in dam reservoirs; the highest biomass in spring of dry season in Lake Paldang, Lake Cheongpyeong which are the river-type reservoirs and Lake Doam where turbidity was high throughout the year, and in summer and autumn of rainy season in Lake Chungju and Lake Hoengseong which are the lake-type reservoirs, indicating that the seasonal pattern for growth of phytoplankton in on-river reservoirs is mainly determined by hydrologic characteristics. The dominant species of phytoplankton in Lake Paldang, Lake Cheongpyeong and Lake Doam, where the concentration of nutrients was relatively high, were Bacillariophyceae such as Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Aulacoseira granulata var. angustissima in Lake Paldang and Lake Cyeongpyeong and Nitzschia spp. in Lake Doam throughout all season. The dominant species of phytoplankton in Lake Chungju and Lake Hoengseong which showed the oligo-mesotrophic state, were Bacillariophyceae such as Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Cyclotella pseudostelligera in spring and winter, but Cyanophyceae such as Microcystis spp. in summer.

  • The Doam Lake watershed is one of the non-point source management areas announced by the Ministry of Environment, and is a constant problem for the stream ecosystem dut to Storm water. In this study, a total of 48(rainfall) and 47(non-rainfall) sites were investigated for the entire watershed (Samyangcheon, Chahangcheon, Hoenggyecheon, Yongpyeongcheon, Songcheon, Lake Doam) on August 15, 2019 and on October 18, 2019 to estimate the source of turbid water in the Doam Lake watershed. Subsequently, water quality analysis was performed on Suspended Soild (SS), Turbidity, Total Phosphorus (TP), Total Nitrogen (TN), and Biochemical Oxygen Demands (BOD) and correlation among water quality parameters was analyzed based on the analyzed samples. As a result, most of the turbid water generated during rainfall was in highland fields. During rainfall, Hoengyecheon had the highest average SS concentration among all streams, and during non-rainfall, the average SS concentration was highest in Yongpyeongcheon, so the two stream were selected as vulnerable areas. However, since Yongpyeongcheon may be a temporary phenomenon due to river construction, additional continuous monitoring is required. Therefore, in the Doam Lake watershed, intensive management is required for vulnerable areas.

  • The Doam lake watershed was designated as a non-point pollution management area in 2007 to improve water quality based on watershed management implementation. There have been studies of non-point source reduction with respect to the watershed management impacting the pollutant transport of the reservoir. However, a little attention has been focused on the impact of water quality improvement by the management of the dam operation or the guidelines on the dam operation. In this study, the impact of in-lake management practices combined with watershed management is analyzed, and the appropriate guidelines on the operation of the dam are suggested. The integrated modeling system by coupling with the watershed model (HSPF) and reservoir water quality model (CE-QUAL-W2) was applied for analyzing the impact of water quality management practices. A scenario implemented with sedimentation basin and suspended matter barrier showed decrease in SS concentration up to 4.6%. The SS concentration increased in the scenarios adjusting withdrawal location from EL.673 m to the upper direction(EL.683 m and EL.688 m). The water quality was comparably high when the scenario implemented all in-lake practices with water intake at EL.673 m. However, there was improvement in water quality when the height of the water intake was moved to EL.688 m during the summer by preventing sediments inflow after the rainfall. Therefore, to manage water quality of the Doam lake, it is essential to control the water quality by modulating the height of water intake through consistent turbidity monitoring during rainfall.

  • Environmental factors and phytoplankton community in Lake Doam were monthly investigated at 3 stations from April 2009 to November 2009. During the study period, the concentrated rainfalls occurred at between July and August and then the TP and turbidity were sharply increased in in-lake. A total of 91 phytoplankton species was classified and these were consisted of 38 Bacillariophyceae, 35 Chlorophyceae, 10 Cyanophyceae, and 8 other species. Bacillariophyceae and Chlorophyceae were dominated during the seasonal succession of phytoplankton community, especially summer season. Bacillariophyceae was dominated from spring season to summer season and Chlorophyceae was dominated at summer season and autumn season. However, the dominance of Cyanophyceae generally developed at summer season in eutrophic water was not observed. From the analysis of correlation coefficient between environmental factors and phytoplankton cell number, we confirmed that there was a negative correlation between turbidity and cyanobacteria cell number (P<0.01). This result indicated that turbid water acts as the inhibitor of the cyanobacteria growth than other phytoplankton community.

  • This study was surveyed that water physiochemical characteristics and phytoplankton incidence of main stream and Lake Doam near to Daegwallyeong agricultural area. Based on above results, it was conducted to get information overall water characteristics in south Han upstream river. COD value of Lake Doam was $6.1mg\;L^{-1}$ and T-P (Total phosphorous) from there was $0.26mg\;L^{-1}$ which was higher than the value of grade VI based on lake water living environment standard. Suspended solid was an average of 9.77 NTU which was higher than value of lake living standard. Concentration of phytoplankton was over $2.0{\times}10^3Cell\;mL^{-1}$ from July to September. It was considered that cyanobacteria were occurred due to massive influx of nutrient material by high temperature and rainfall during this season. Compare to Ontario's sediment quality guidelines, T-N and T-P was middle value between LEL and SEL in Lake Doam. This value means that contamination in water is serious. Therefore, it is considered that systematic management was needed to reduce and block contamination source.

  • The Doam Lake Watershed is one of Gangwon-do's non-point source management areas. This area has a lot of snowfall in winter, and it is expected that there will be a lot of soil erosion in early spring due to snow melting. In this study, snow melting was monitored in the Doam Lake watershed from February to 3, 2020. It was conducted to analyze the water quality changes by calculating the concentration of non-point source pollution caused by snowmelt, and to compare the concentration of water quality during snowmelt event with rainfall and non-rainfall event. As a result of water quality analysis, Event Mean Concentration (EMC) at the first monitoring was SS 33.9 mg/L, TP 0.13 mg/L, TN 4.33 mg/L, BOD 1.35 mg/L, TOC 1.84 mg/L. At the second monitoring, EMC were SS 81.3 mg/L, TP 0.15 mg/L, TN 3.12 mg/L, BOD 1.32 mg/L, TOC 3.46 mg/L. In parameter except SS, it showed good water quality. It is necessary to establish management measures through continuous monitoring.

  • Both fish community and water quality in Lake Doam were investigated from September 2004 to August 2005. The turbidity of Lake Doam located in the upper region of the Songchun River in the South River system, Korea was high whole year due to the effects of distributed non point source pollutions in the watersheds. During the experimental periods, mean concentration of chlorophyll-a in epilimnetic layer (0 ${\sim}$ 5 m) was 18.5 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ and transparency ranged from 0.3 m to 2.4 m. Average TP and TN concentrations were 111 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ and 4.1 $mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. Lake was classified as eutrophic state based on the nutrient concentrations suggested by U.S.EPA (1976). Total number of fish collected in Lake Doam was 9,600 individuals in 26 species of 6 family. Both dominant and subdominant species in the lake were P. herzi (34.9%) and Z. platypus (22.5%), respectively. Occurrence of water column species was high at upper region of the lake, whereas benthic type of species highly ,appeared in downstream area. The different fish assemblage between upper and lower area would be considered as the difference of bottom substrate and concentrations of suspended solids. In addition high appearance of Comat type of fish that is hybrid between gold fish (C, auratus) and C. auratus was found in the lake. It was unclear the reasons that high proportion of mutant species appeared in the lake. More researches are required in this area in future.
