Thermal Dispersion Analysis Using Semi-Active Particle Tracking in Near Field Combined with Two-Dimensional Eulerian-Lagrangian Far Field Model (근역에서 부력입자추적모형을 적용한 Eulerian-Lagrangian 결합에 의한 온수확산)

  • In order to simulate surface discharged heat dispersion in costal area, a 2-dimensional Eulerian-Lagrangian model for far field and semi-active particle tracking random walk model in near field has been combined. The mass of discharged heat water in near field has treated as particles with buoyancy and this is eventually converted to horizontal additive dispersion in random walk equations. This model is applied to both a simplified coastal geometry and a real site. In simple application it can simulate plume-like characteristics around discharging point than a near field-model, CORMIX/3. Actual application in the Chonsu Bay shows farther spreading of heat water in near field comparing the observed data, and this shows that the developed model might be applied with satisfaction.

  • In this study, the behaviors of a vessel and the ground during the vessel impacting an underwater slope that is part of an artificial protective island are analyzed using the coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian scheme. To consider the large deformation including the shear failure of soil, the Eulerian domain is used to model the ground and water, while the impacting objects are modeled as the Lagrangian domain. For efficiency, the mass scaling scheme is applied to the modeling of the impacting objects, and the ground is modeled by setting the Eulerian volume fraction values. To verify the applicability of the constructed model, a dynamic penetration anchor problem is analyzed. The impacting vessel is modeled using solid elements following the external shape of a container ship, and an analysis of a collision on the slope is performed. As a result, collision behaviors such as displacement, velocity, and dissipation energy are estimated, and the necessity of a parametric study as further research is established.

  • A new model for dense gas dispersion is formulated within the Lagrangian framework. In several accidental released situations, denser-than-air vapour clouds are formed which exhibit dispersion behavior markedly different from that observed for passive atmospheric pollutants. For relevant prediction of dense gas dispersion, the gravity and entrainment effects need to implemented. The model deals with negative buoyancy which is affected by gravity. Also, the model is subjected to entrainment. The mean downward motion of each particle was accounted for by considering the Langevin equation with buoyancy correction term.

  • The present simulation model relies on a new approach of the heavy particle motion in a turbulent flow considering the time and space correlation to the Lagrangian point of view. The turbulent field is, here, assumed that its characteristic scales are random and follow a Poisson's distribution. Using this model, we have computed the trajectory of each particle, that is, its velocity and position at each time in order to study the dispersion of particles in a grid turbulent flow. The computed results have been compared to the corresponding experimental data. Due to the complex mechanism of turbulence and the theoretically and experimentally lacking information, we had to make some assumptions for simplifying the situation, but we have found the good agreement between simulated and measured results. In particular, the application of the present method on the Lagrangian correlation of particle provides an interesting alternative to the usual computational methods.

  • An analysis for particle settling effects via of plume centerline tilted exponentially under the influence of panicle settling velocity is carried out for particle of $30{\mu}m$ diameter with $1g/cm^3$ density and 0.02m/s settling velocity corresponding to its particle characteristic according to various wind speeds, atmospheric stabilities. Characteristic analysis of surface concentration distribution simulated by Lagrangian model also are carried out under the influence of plume centerline tilted exponentially at 10m stack height emitted 200 particles per second. This study reveals that plume centerline at the nearby source is sharply tilted exponentially under the condition of stable, weakly wind speed, therefore the lower concentration at the nearby source, the higher concentration at the downwind distance far away from source than actual one is brought out, if not apply the effect of plume centerline tilted exponentially to diffusion Model.

  • On the notion that the Reynolds stresses are transported with different time scale depending on the transport direction, the third order velocity correlations are represented by a new turbulent gradient transport model with tonsorial Lagrangian time scale. In order to verify the proposed model, DNS data are first obtained in a turbulent channel flow at Re = 180 and tonsorial Lagrangian time scales are computed. The present model predictions are compared with DNS data and those predicted by the third-order turbulent transport model of Hanjalic and Launder that uses a scalar time scale. The result demonstrates that the Reynolds stresses are indeed transported with different time scale depending on the transport direction.

  • Coastal areas, especially embayments are apt to be polluted easily and many embayments in Korea are already suffering from pollution problems. To manage such pollution, it is strongly needed to develop technique to trace movements of pollution. Such technique cove- ring the embayment affected by the tidal influence, should take account both of the convection and the diffusion motions which cause lots of problems in numerical calculation. In this study, a Eulerian-Lagrangian Analysis(ELA) model was applied to Young Il bay and tested for its applicablity, which was developed by using the Eulerian-Lagrangian Method that reduce the numerical disperison and oscillation by way of solving convection and diffusion terrns separately. Concentration of Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD) and Suspend Solid(SS) of the embay- ment area were estimated by the model and compared with the observed values and the sound results were obtained. At the same time the diffsion coefficient and decay coefficient for Chemical Oxygen Demand in the Young II Bay were found as Dx = Dy = 20m$^2$/sec, kd=2.5 ${\times}$ 10-5/sec respectively, and for Suspend Solid, Dx =Dy = 30m$^2$/sec, kd=5.0${\times}$ 10-5/sec

  • In this study, the coupled-numerical model has been newly developed to investigate numerically scouring and deposition around a coastal structure like a submerged breakwater using a numerical wave model and a lagrangian particle model for sand transport. As a numerical wave model, LES-WASS-2D (Hur and Choi, 2008) is adopted. The model is able to consider the flow through a porous midium with inertial, laminar and turbulent resistance term and determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulence model. Distinct element method (Cundall and Strack, 1979), which is able to apply to many dynamical analysis of particulate media, as a lagrangian particle model for sand transport is newly coupled to the numerical wave model. The numerical simulation has been carried out to examine the scour problem in front of an impermeable submerged breakwater using the newly coupled-numerical model. The numerical results has been compared qualitatively with an existing experimental data and then its applicability has been discussed.
