  • The cavitating noise of underwater propeller is considered numerically in this study. The main purpose of this research is to analyze these noise sources from marine propeller. The approach for investigation is a potential based panel method coupled with acoustic analogy. To predict propeller sheet cavitation noise, the blade surface cavity is considered as a single valued pulsating volume of vapor attached to the blade surface. The time dependent cavity volume data are used for noise prediction. Furthermore, we analyze hydrofoil cavitation bubble behavior and noise using Eulerian/Lagrangian approach. Through this study, we can analyze dominant noise source of marine propeller and provide a basis for proper noise control strategies.

  • Human heart valves diseased by congenital heart defects, rheumatic fever, bacterial infection, cancer may cause stenosis or insufficiency in the valves. Treatment may be with medication but often involves valve repair or replacement (insertion of an artificial heart valve). Bileaflet mechanical heart valves (BMHVs) are widely implanted to replace the diseased heart valves, but still suffer from complications such as hemolysis, platelet activation, tissue overgrowth and device failure. These complications are closely related to both flow characteristics through the valves and leaflet dynamics. In this study, the physiological flow interacting with the moving leaflets in a bileaflet mechanical heart valve (BMHV) is simulated with a strongly coupled implicit fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method which is newly organized based on the Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approach and the dynamic mesh method (remeshing) in FLUENT. The simulated results are in good agreement with previous experimental studies. This study shows the applicability of the present FSI model to the complicated physics interacting between fluid flow and moving boundary.

  • In this paper, we study the modeling and control of Electro-Magnetic Suspension System with 2 Degree Of Freedom. While the previous researchers considered the control of single rail EMS Systems, we consider the control of two rail EMS Systems. We first derive a simple model to represent the dynamics of EMS System with 2 D.O.F., using the Lagrange's method. The nonlinear equations of motion that we derive are shown to be linearizable by coordinate change and nonlinear static state feedback. The nonlinear static state feedback controller is constructed explicitly.

  • This paper presents numerical investigation of multi-phase flow in solid rocket motor nozzle and effect of multi-phases on the performance prediction of the Solid Rocket Motor. Aluminized propellants are frequently used in solid rocket motors to increase specific impulse. An Eulerian-Lagrangian description has been used to analyze the motion of the micrometer sized and discrete phase that consist of the larger particulates present in the Solid Rocket Motor. Uniform particles diameters and Rosin-Rammler diameter distribution method has been used for the simulation of different burning of aluminum droplets generating aluminum oxide smokes. Roe-FDS scheme has been used to simulate the effects of the multi-phase flow. The results obtained show the sensitivity of this distribution to the nozzle flow dynamics, primarily at the nozzle inlet and exit. The analysis also provides effect of two phases on performance prediction of Solid Rocket Motor.

  • We investigate flow and magnetic structure of a solar prominence with a focus on how the magnetic field originally determined by subsurface dynamics gives rise to the structure. We perform a magnetohydrodynamic simulation that reproduces the self-consistent evolution of a flow and the magnetic field passing freely through the solar surface. By analyzing Lagrangian displacements of magnetized plasma elements, we demonstrate the flow structure that is naturally incorporated to the magnetic structure of the prominence formed via dynamic interaction between the flow and the magnetic field. Our results explain a diverging flow on a U-loop, a counterclockwise downdraft along a rotating field line, acceleration and deceleration of a downflow along an S-loop, and partial emergence of a W-loop, which may play key roles in determining structural properties of the prominence.

  • Driftwood is one of serious problems in a river environment. In several countries, such as Indonesia, Japan, and Italy, the driftwood frequently appears in a river basin, and it can alter the channel bed, flow configuration by wood deposition and jam formation. Therefore, the studies related to driftwood have been actively conducted by many researchers to understand the mechanism of driftwood dynamics. In particular, wood motion by collision is one of the difficult issues in the numerical simulation because the calculation for wood collision requires significantly expensive calculation time due to small time step. Thus, this study conducted the numerical simulation in consideration of the wood motion by water flow and wood collision to understand the wood dynamics in terms of computation. We used the 2D (two-dimensional) depth-averaged velocity model, Nays2DH, which is a Eulerian model to calculate the water flow on the generalized coordinate. A Lagrangian type driftwood model, which expresses the driftwood as connected sphere shape particles, was employed to Nays2DH. In addition, the present study considered root wad effect by using larger diameter for a particle at a head of driftwood. An anisotropic bed friction was considered for the sliding motion dependent on stemwise, streamwise and motion directions. We particularly considered changeable draft at each particle and projection area by an angle between stemwise and flow directions to precisely reproduce the wood motions. The simulation results were compared with experimental results to verify the model. As a result, the simulation results showed good agreement with experimental results. Through this study, it would be expected that this model is a useful tool to predict the driftwood effect in the river flow.

  • By controlling the internal pressure in the cyclone separator, we investigated the separation charateristics of $Al_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3$ particles with the internal pressure variation. 3-dimensional Langrangian approach was applied for the analysis of the particles separation, and then the minimum cut diameter of the separated particles and the separation rate were calculated through tracking the particle trajectories. The density of the argon gas for transporting particles was decreased corresponding the pressure decrease, consequently, caused the internal pressure drop in the cyclone separator. For that reason the finer particles were separated as the pressure was changed from an atmospheric pressure to an low pressure. Specifically, at 50 torr pressure, $Al_2O_3$ particles of the size of about 4 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and $Fe_2O_3$particles of about 3 $\mu\textrm{m}$ could be separated.

  • A time-dependent primitive two0dimensional calculation is conducted to investigate the variations of Vol. transport onto the Yellow Sea and the Korea Strait with real bathymetries and to tract the Lagrangian movement of water particles. A series of experiment of the barotropic Kuroshio intrusions shows that the eddy induced branching of Kuroshio has sufficient intensity as to modify the continental shelf circulation. This intrusion seems to be one of the important forcing terms such as winds. tides and buoyancy that can also affect the dynamics in the region of the continental shelf. Transport variations across the shelfbreak due to the branching of Kuroshio which come particularly from the southwest of the Kyushu Island, have a strong relationship with the transport variations across the Korea Strait and in the southern area of the Yellow sea. The particle trajectories of the model results are well agreed with the trajectories of satellite tracking drifters obtained by one of the WOCE/TOGA program except the longer travel time period in the present model.

  • A computational fluid dynamics simulation of pyrotechnic material combustion inside a cylindrical closed vessel was carried out using the Eulerian-Lagrangian method. The 5th order upwind WENO scheme and the improved delayed detached eddy turbulence model were implemented to capture shock waves. The flow structure was analyzed inside the cylindrical vessel with a pressure sensor installed at the side wall center. The analysis revealed that the pressure oscillated because of the shock wave vibration. Additionally, the simulation results with four different sensor tab depths implied that, inside the sensor tab, eddies were generated by the excessively large gap between the sensor diaphragm and the side wall. These eddies caused irregularity to the measured time-pressure curve, which is an undesirable characteristic.
