Surgical Management of Edentulous Atrophic Mandible Fractures in the Elderly

  • Fractures of the mandible occur with a greater frequency in the elderly. This study reports three cases of edentulous atrophic mandible fracture in elderly patients treated with open reduction technique. Three patients who presented with edentulous atrophic mandible fractures underwent surgical management using open reduction and internal fixation. After treatment, clinical evaluations and postoperative complications were examined with postoperative x-ray. Patients were followed with clinical and radiographic examinations. In the postoperative clinical evaluation, two male patients healed well, but one female patient complained of pain and swelling. In radiographic examinations, no union delay or lack of fusion was observed in the edentulous area. Open reduction technique is a viable treatment option for the edentulous atrophic mandible fractures in geriatric patients.

Survey of Korean CM Contracts for Current Status and Future Direction: Based on 1997 to 2013 Statistics

  • As domestic construction investment has been gradually reduced, expanding overseas construction is one of the most important issues for Korean construction companies. Among these issues, strategies for overseas CM services have widely been discussed, because the CM services have features of high growth potential and value-added area when compared with other construction sectors. Therefore, recent efforts focus on further development in advanced CM capabilities and expansion to overseas market. However, there has been lack of quantitative research to investigate current status and future direction of CM industry. In this sense, this research investigated what CM has achieved for the past 17years (between 1997 and 2013) and what CM should accomplish for future strategies. The purpose of this research is to statistically analyze total of 2,983 CM service contracts over the past 17 years published in KISCON (Knowledge Information System of Construction Industry) in order to examine current status of CM industry in terms of market type, contract size, commodity type, and owner's type. Based on this research, it is expected to suggest for future strategies and development directions from the CM industry perspective that could provide quantitative analyses, improve current CM statistics systems and strengthen the competitiveness in international CM market.

  • To develop high-quality software systems satisfying the customer's needs, user-centered design (UCD) process has been emphasized in the area of human-computer interaction. And component-based development (CBD) has been extensively studied to realize a systematic software reuse, thereby reducing the time-to-market and the development cost. Balanced integration of user-centered design process and CBD process will be a promising way for successful software construction, which effectively achieves three goals: the quality of software, the cost of software development, and the time-to-market. However, traditional CBD methodology seems to lack the concept of user-centered design process and the relevant methods. This paper proposes a way of incorporating user-centered design process into a CBD methodology. Firstly, this paper gives the brief introduction of UCD. Secondly, we explain typical UCD activities and methods along the phase of systems development lifecycle and propose the use of usability maturity model (UMM) for integrating UCD activities and methods with those of CBD methodology. Finally, as a case study, we describe the results of comparing the UCD activities to the activities of MaRMI-III, which has been developed as a CBD methodology at ETRI.

우리나라의 음식물쓰레기처리 방법의 개관 (An Overview of Food Waste Treatment Methods in Korea)

  • This article deal with an overview of food waste treatment methods in Korea. Garbage trucks are operated manually by garbage workers who pick up the food wastes after food waste is placed in plastic bags by the road sides. However, there are a lot of problems such as, the smell from the split bags and the leachate, the loss of much energy and the complaints regarding the establishment new rubbish tips from the residents in the surrounding area. It also highlights our society's waste of resources. Although the new pneumatic waste transfer system or the dry method seem to have improved some of the environmental conditions, it still bears some problems, for example, the lack of reuse and recycling of resources and the economic problems. We have been analysed the advantages and disadvantages between the existing food waste system and the pneumatic waste transfer system. And the dry method and disposer were discussed. The results will indicate how the disposer can improve more than the existing systems and will provide the evidence to support.

한국민간조사제도 도입전망과 과제 (The tasks and prospect of introducing the pravite investigation servicesystem in korea)

  • With rapid changes taking place in every field, the expansion and specialization of various social service activities are one of the characteristics of the modem society. However, the increase of crimes and inefficiency of public police service to cope with this situation have caused discontent and distrust on the service among the public, making people more inclined to solve safety-related problems by themselves. Private Security Service(PSS) and Private Investigation Service(PIS) were introduced to satisfy these needs. In the area of PIS, Public Investigation Service System(PISS) has been established for a quite long time in foreign countries. However in Korea, PIS is being provided by unregulated service providers such as errand service center due to the lack of legal system, causing many problems related with illegal practices by the service providers. This paper is the result of the research on how to adopt a relevant PISS in Korea and develop it in the future. This kind of research is much needed to curb the rising illegal practices of the errand service centers, complement the insufficient operation of public police service, and strengthen the competitiveness of our country by taking more efficient actions in the changing public security environment. Based on the research, this paper also examines positively the possibility of introduction of PIS in Korea. This paper also recommends a prompt enactment of PIS regulation and improvement on the legal environment for such introduction of the relevant and suitable PISS in Korea.

Discovery of Massive Galaxy Cluster Candidates in the Southern Sky

  • Galaxy clusters are the largest structures in the universe located at the top of the cosmological hierarchical model, so the evolution of the universe can be understood by studying clusters of galaxies. Therefore, finding a larger number of galaxy clusters plays an important role in exploring how the universe evolves. A large number of catalogs for galaxy clusters in the northern sky have been published; however, there are few catalogs in the southern sky due to the lack of wide sky survey data. KMTNet Synoptic Survey of Southern Sky(KS4) project, which observes a wide area of the southern sky about 7000 deg2 with KMTNet telescopes for two years, is in progress under the SNU Astronomy Research Center. We use the KS4 multi-wavelength optical data and measure photometric redshifts of galaxies for finding galaxy clusters at redshift z<1. Currently, the KS4 project has observed approximately 50% of the target region, and a pipeline that measures photometric redshifts of galaxies has been created. When the project is completed, we expect to find more than a hundred thousand galaxy clusters, and this will improve the study of galaxy clusters in the southern sky.

국내 컨테이너 하우징의 실태조사를 통한 개선방향연구 - 수도권 지역의 12개 사례를 중심으로 - (A Study on the Improving Direction of Container Housing through Field Survey - Based on the Analysis of 12 cases in the Urban Area -)

  • In foreign countries, the use of containers has already been stabilized with their advantages utilized in various forms. Containers are also utilized in Korea as various forms of architecture, but domestic container buildings have poor public consciousness so as to be limitedly utilized as temporary structures based on economic efficiency. Besides, there is the lack of research and development on them. Particularly, despite the advantages of containers as housing facilities, the use of containers as short- or middle-term temporary housing is limited and does not spread. Also, compared to general housing, containers have lower quality of physical environment and even frequently bring about negligent accidents such as fire and electric shock. Thus, this study intends to identify the actual condition of using container houses, the problems in using them, and the direction of improving their residential environment. For this purpose, it analyzes the present condition and characteristics of domestic container housing, and derives conclusions from the focus group interview with 23 residents who have lived in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do for over a year about such survey items as daylighting, ventilation, privacy condition, water service and sewerage, insulation, soundproofing, view, and room scale.

KS4 Galaxy Clusters Catalog in Southern Sky

The changes of soil salinity in the Pinus densiflora forest after seawater spread using a fire-fight helicopter

  • The east coast of the Korean Peninsula is susceptible to fires because of the low rainfall in winter and spring, and large forest fires have occurred in this area. Lack of fresh water to combat fires has hampered efforts to prevent widespread forest fires in this region. Seawater has not been used as a suppressant because of possible detrimental effects of salt. We investigated the mobility of saline water in the forest soil and their effect on the microbial activity. Using a fire-fighting helicopter, seawater was sprayed over three plots (50 × 100 m) located on the eastern slope of the Baekdu mountain range in South Korea in April, 2011. We sampled the soil in April 4, May 20, and August 5 to determine the amount of salt that remained in the soil. The electrical conductivity value of the soil decreased to <400 μS/cm over a 1-month period. Approximately, four months after the application of seawater, the electrical conductivity value and Na+ content in all treatment plots did not significantly differ to those of the control plot, and total microbial activity also recovered to that of the control. Our results indicate that the amount of rainfall, soil physical-chemical properties, and topological factors may be a critical factor determining the mobility of saline water in forest soil.

한국과 싱가포르의 중학교 과학 교과서의 물리 영역 탐구 활동의 특징 비교 (A Comparative Study on Physics Inquiry Activities of Science Textbooks for Secondary School in Korea and Singapore)

  • 본 연구는 한국과 싱가포르의 중학교 과학 교과서에 실린 물리 영역의 탐구 활동을 비교 분석함으로써 차기 과학과 교과서 탐구 활동 구성에 대한 시사점을 얻기 위한 목적을 지닌다. 두 나라의 교과서 탐구 활동을 탐구 활동의 일반적인 특징과 참 과학 탐구(authentic scientific inquiry)의 반영 정도라는 두 가지 측면에서 분석하였는데, 이를 위해 각각 Millar et al.(1998)의 탐구 활동 분석틀과 Chinn & Malhotra(2002)의 분석틀을 수정 보완하여 이용하였다. 연구 결과, 두 나라 탐구 활동의 목적, 학생의 사고 관련 활동, 과제의 개방성 정도에서 차이가 발견되었다. 탐구 활동의 목적 영역에서 한국은 내용 중심적인 활동이 많았고, 싱가포르는 과정 중심적인 활동이 많았다. 학생의 사고 관련 활동 영역에서 싱가포르에는 한국에는 드문 '예상한 것 검증하기' 등의 사고 관련 활동이 있었으며, 탐구의 개방성 정도도 싱가포르가 한국보다 높았다. 두 나라의 탐구 활동에서 참 과학 탐구를 반영하고 있는 정도에도 차이가 발견되었다. 한국에는 학생들이 스스로 연구 문제를 착안하는 활동이 전혀 없었으나 싱가포르에는 이러한 활동이 있었으며, 연구 설계 항목에서 한국의 탐구 활동에는 없는 변인 설정, 변인 통제 활동이 싱가포르에는 발견되었다. 연구 결과는 교과서 탐구 활동을 구성할 때 탐구 활동의 목적, 학생의 사고 관련 활동, 과제의 개방성 정도 등의 요소가 고르게 포함되도록 할 필요가 있으며, 참 과학 탐구 요소를 적절히 반영할 필요가 았다는 것을 시사한다.
