The investigation of stress wave propagation in a medium with initial stress has very important application in the field of engineering. However, the previous research less consider the influence of initial stress gradient on wave propagation. In the present paper, the governing equation of wave propagation in elastic continuum material with inhomogeneous initial stress is derived, which indicated that the inhomogeneous initial stress changed the governing equation of wave propagation. Additionally, the definite problem of wave propagation in material with initial stress gradient is verified by using mathematical physics method. Based on the definite problem, the elastic displacement-time relationship of wave propagation is explored, which indicated that the inhomogeneous initial stress changed waveform and relationship of displacement-time histories. Furthermore, the spall process of blasting wave propagation from underground to earth surface is simulated by using LS-DYNA.

The resistance performance of an icebreaking cargo vessel according to the variation of waterline angles is investigated numerically and experimentally. A recently developed Finite Element (FE) model is used in our analysis. A resistance test with synthetic ice is performed in the towing tank at Pusan National University (PNU) to compare and validate the computed results. We demonstrate good agreement between the experimental and numerical results. Shipice interaction loads are numerically calculated based on the Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) method in the commercial FE package LS-DYNA. Test results from model testing with synthetic ice at the PNU towing tank are used to compare and validate the numerical simulations. For each waterline angle, numerical and experimental comparisons were made for three concentrations (90%, 80%, and 60%) of pack ice. Ice was modeled as a rigid body, but the ice density was the same as that used in the experiments. A comparative study according to the variation of stem angles is expected to be conducted in the near future.

The dynamic response of the head arm assembly (HAA) of a hard disk drive to an impact load was obtained from a 3D non-linear finite element model using ANSYS/LS-DYNA and from experiments using a modified levitation mass method (LMM). In the finite element model, the impact load was created by modeling the mass as a rigid body and making it collide with the HAA. The velocity, displacement, acceleration, and inertial force of the mass were then obtained from the time history data of the finite element analysis. In the LMM, a mass that was levitated with an aerostatic linear bearing, and hence encountered negligible friction, was made to collide with the actuator arm, resulting in a dynamic bending test for the arm. During the collision, the Doppler frequency shift of the laser beam reflected from the mass was accurately measured with an optical interferometer. The velocity, displacement, acceleration, and inertial force of the mass were accurately calculated from the measured time-varying Doppler frequency shift. A good correlation between the experimental data and FEA results was observed. The FEA was also used to investigate the dynamic response of the HAA to impact by different masses.
One and three dimensional whipping response analyses of a naval surface combatant subjected to an underwater explosion bubble pulse were carried out to compare the efficiency and accuracy according to the modeling methods. In 1-D analysis, program UNDEXWHIP developed by KIMM was used, which is based on the thin-walled Timoshenko's beam theory and on the modal analysis method using wetted vibratory modes of the hull girder. In 3-D analysis, three finite element models were suggested using LS-DYNA/USA code, such as 3-D beam model considering geometric shape of wetted side shell, coarse and fine 3-D F.E. models. Through the comparison of results from the 1-D and 3-D analyses, it could be confirmed that 1-D analysis result is in good agreement with 3-D analysis ones, and that fine 3-D F.E. model, shock analysis one, is also used both in the shock response and whipping response analyses for the analyst effort and time savings.
An investigation was performed to study the impact damage of the laminated composite plates caused by a low- velocity foreign object with multi-scale modeling based on the concepts of Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS)[4]. In the micro-scale part, we discretize the composite plates through separate modeling of fiber and matrix for the local microscopic analysis. A micro-scalemodel was developed for predicting the initiation of the damage and the extent of the final damage as a function of material properties, laminate configuration and the impactor's mass, etc. Anda macro-scale model was developed for description of global dynamic behavior. The connection betweenmicroscopic and macroscopic is implemented by the tied interface constraints of LS-DYNA contact card. A transient dynamic finite element analysis was adopted for calculating the contact force history and the stresses and strains inside the composites during impact resulting from a point-nose impactor. The low-velocity impact events such as contact force, deformation, etc. are simulated in the macroscopic sense and the impact damages, fiber-breakage, matrix cracking and delamination etc. are examined in the microscopic sense.
Usually the analyses of structures are carried out by assuming the base of structures to be fixed. However, the soil beneath foundation alters the earthquake loading and varies the response of structure. Hence, it is not realistic to analyze structures by considering it to be fixed. The importance of soil-structure interaction was realized from the past failures of massive structures by neglecting the effect of soil in seismic analysis. The analysis of massive structures requires soil flexibility to be considered to avoid failure and ensure safety. Present study, considers the seismic behavior of multi-storey reinforced concrete narrow and wide buildings of various heights with and without shear wall supported on raft foundation incorporating the effect of soil flexibility. Analysis of the three dimensional models of six different shear wall positions founded on four different soils has been carried out using finite element software LS DYNA. The study investigates the differences in spectral acceleration coefficient (Sa/g), base shear and storey shear obtained following the seismic provisions of Indian standard code IS: 1893 (2002) (IS) and International building code IBC: 2012 (IBC). The base shear values obtained as per IBC provisions are higher than IS values.
Finite element simulations are increasingly used in structural analysis and design, especially in cases where complex structural and loading conditions are involved. Due to considerable progresses in computer technology as well as nonlinear finite-element analysis techniques in past years, it has become possible to pursue an accurate analysis of the complex blast-induced structural effects by means of numerical simulations. This paper aims to develop a better understanding of the behavior of steel-concrete composite beams (SCCB) under localized blast loading through a numerical parametric study. A finite element model is set up to simulate the blast-resistant features of SCCB using the transient dynamic analysis software LS-DYNA. It is demonstrated that there are three dominant failure modes for SCCB subjected to localized blast loading. The effect of loading position on the behavior of SCCB is also investigated. Finally, a simplified model is proposed for assessing the overall response of SCCB subjected to localized blast loading.
The design specifications of guard fences in Japan were reexamined and the revised specifications were implemented from April 1999. Because of the huge consumption in time and cost to test the performances of full-scale guard fences in the field, some assumptions are adopted while modifying the design specifications, and numerical analyses are necessary to confirm the impact performance and safety level of new types of steel highway guard fences. In this study, the finite element models are developed for the heavy trucks and steel highway guard fences to reenact their behaviors, and the solution approach is carried out using nonlinear dynamic analysis software of structures in three dimensions (LS-DYNA). The numerical simulation results are compared with the full-scale on-site testing results to verify the proposed analysis procedure. The collision process is simulated and it is also made possible to visualize the movement of the truck and the performances of guard fences. In addition, the energy shift of the truck kinetic energy to the truck and guard fence Internal energy, and the energy absorption of each guard fence component are studied for the development of a new design methodology of steel highway guard fences based on the energy absorption capacity.
Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is widely used for retrofitting concrete structures for various purposes. Especially, for the retrofitting of concrete structures subjected to blast loads, FRP is proven to be a very effective retrofitting material. However, a systematic design procedure to implement FRP for concrete structure retrofitting against blast loads does not exist currently. In addition, in case of concrete structures with inarticulate geometrical boundary conditions such as arch structures, an effective analysis technique is needed to obtain reliable results based on minimal analytical assumptions. Therefore, in this study, a systematic and efficient blast analysis procedure for FRP retrofitting design of concrete arch structure is suggested. The procedure is composed of three sequential parts of preliminary analysis, breach and debris analysis, and retrofit-material analysis. Based on the suggested procedure, blast analyses are carried out by using explicit code, LS-DYNA. The study results are discussed in detail.
This paper is concerned with crash analysis for an auto-body member with the forming effect. Auto-body members such as a front frame assembly are fabricated with sheet metal forming processes that induce forming histories such as the plastic work hardening and non-uniform thickness distribution. Numerical simulation is carried out with LS-DYNA3D in order to identify the forming effect on the crashworthiness. The crash analysis of the front frame assembly with the forming effect leads to a different result from that without the forming effect. Crashworthiness such as the load-carrying capacity, the crash mode and the energy absorption are calculated to investigate and identify the forming effect. It is fully demonstrated that the design of auto-body members needs to consider the forming effect for accurate assessment of the load-carrying capacity and the deformation mechanism of the formed members.
