Manufacturing process for milli components has recently gained researcher's focus with the increasing tendency toward highly integrated and micro-scaled parts for electronic devices. The milli-components cannot be formed by the conventional manufacturing process since the parts require higher dimensional accuracy than the conventional ones. In order to enhance the forming accuracy and productivity, various forming procedures proposed and studied by many researchers. In this paper, forming analysis of milli-components has been studied with a new micro-former. In modeling of progressive dies, multi-stage forming sequence has been analyzed with finite element analysis by LS-DYNA3D. The analysis proposes the sequential die and part shapes with the corresponding punch force and dimensional accuracy. The analysis also considers the effect of elastic dies on the dimensional accuracy of the formed parts. The analysis result demonstrates that the elastic analysis in the milli-forming process is indispensable fur accurate forming analysis. The analysis procedure in the paper will provide good information in design of a new micro-former and milli-component.
Electrohydraulic forming (EHF) is a high-speed forming process that uses an electric arc discharge in water. Shock waves resulting from the electric arc discharge are propagated to the blank through water and the blank moves toward the die. Advantages of EHF include improved formability due to the high-speed process and reduction of the bouncing effect. In the current study, a numerical simulation of EHF was developed using LS-DYNA. In the simulation, the model for the electric arc was assumed as an adiabatic gas expansion and an Arbitrary Lagrange-Eulerian (ALE) multi material formulation was used to describe the interaction between the electric arc and the water. In order to model the Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI), a coupling mechanism was used. The blank of Al 1100-O was simulated using shell elements. The results of the simulation showed that the blank was deformed due to the pressure propagation of water and the bouncing effect did not affect the formability of blank.
Recently, electric vehicles and hybrid cars are being promoted as alternatives to reduce automobile emissions. Generally, thin sheet materials such as aluminum alloy AA300X and cold-rolled steel sheet such as JIS-G-3141 are used for the container for the lithium-ion secondary batteries. In this study, a multi-stage deep drawing process is used to produce a rectangular cup from thin stainless steel sheet material, SUS409L, with an initial blank thickness of 0.4mm for the battery container application. Numerical simulations of the first through the fifth stages for the multi-stage deep drawing with thin SUS409L sheet were conducted using LS-Dyna3D Implicit/Explicit. Special consideration was given to the deformation characteristics due to the normal anisotropy of the sheet material. The numerical simulations were conducted with both isotropic properties and the anisotropic properties of the initial blank material. An unexpected forming failure, barreling in the bottom region of the deep drawn rectangular cup, was observed. This failure mode can be avoided by additional ironing thickness control during the process.
This study presents an explicit dynamic analysis of an adhesively bonded single-lap joint under an impact load. The finite element software, ANSYS LS-DYNA, was used for the analysis and Von Mises stresses were obtained from the analysis. To model the adherents, solid elements were used and a rigid body was assumed for impactor modeling. Three impact heights (1 m, 5 m, and 10 m) were applied to consider different impact conditions and infinite boundary conditions were applied to the end-area of each adherent to save computational time in the analysis. In addition to investigating the stresses in the normal state, we also investigated the stresses in a damaged state (elasticity deterioration), simulated by a change in Young's modulus for 36 of the 3600 elements in the upper layer of the adhesive. The results showed that the location of damage is critical to the stress state of each layer (upper, middle, and lower).
This research covers the development of new technique for composite injection molding of high stiffness Sabot. An analysis of polymer resin is performed by means of making test specimen mold and doing test with accordance of ASTM test guidelines. Structural analysis and simulation of injection molding process are carried out in order not only to estimate but also to predict the characteristics of molding stresses what both product and structure of mold may have. For structural analysis software, Moldflow and LS-dyna are used and universal test machine is utilized for evaluating performance of sabot. Cases of adopting this material to sabot are not announced yet in domestic academic world. In addition to that, materials for polymer-metal mixed injection molding are imported on the whole due to deficient level of domestic technology. Therefore, this new developed injection molding technique using PEI material can make it available to ensure the technology of making mold, injection and design. Finally, this technique may be applicable to another sabot having different radius of warheads from now on.
The paper seeks to explore some aspects of the current state of knowledge on progressive collapse in the technical literature covering blast loads and structural analysis procedure applicable to reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. The paper describes the progressive collapse analysis of a commercial RC building located in the city of Riyadh and subjected to different blast scenarios. A 3-D finite element model of the structure was created using LS-DYNA, which uses explicit time integration algorithms for solution. Blast loads were treated as dynamic pressure-time history curves applied to the exterior elements. The inherent shortcomings of notional member removal have been taken care of in the present paper by simulating the damage of structural elements through the use of solid elements with the provision of element erosion. Effects of erosion and cratering are studied for different scenarios of the blast.
In this paper, the theory of rectangular plate on the elastic foundation is used to get the relation equation between the effective Young’s modulus and the ice sheet deflection by applying the characteristic length concept, since the model ice sheet is rectangular shape in KRISO (Korea Research Institute for Ships and Ocean Engineering) ice basin. The obtained relation equation is equal to that of using the circular plate theory. A device is made and used to measure the deflection of ice plate using LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer) for several loading cases and the procedure of experiments measuring the deflection used for getting the Young’s modulus is explained. In addition, the flexural strength value obtained through flexural strength experiments is compared with that of finite element analysis using the obtained effective Young’s modulus. Also, a nonlinear FEA (Finite Element Analysis) of cantilever ice beam is done with eroding effect and LS-DYNA result shows the fracture of brittle ice under 1 mm/s velocity load.
This paper concerns the crashworthiness of the widely used vehicle structure, the spot welded hat and double hat shaped section members, which are excellent on the point of the energy absorbing capacity and low production cost. The target of this paper is to analyze the energy absorption capacity of the structure against the front-end collision, and to obtain useful information for designing stage. Changing the spot weld pitches on the flanges, the hat and double hat shaped section members were tested on the axial collapse loads in impact velocities of 4.72m/sec, 6.54m/sec, 7.19m/sec and 7.27m/sec. To efficiently review the collapse characteristics of these sections, the simulation have been carried out using explicit FEM package, LS-DYNA3D. The solutions are compared with results from the impact collapse experiments.
The need for drop simulations for board-leveled flip chips in micro-system packaging has been increasing. There have been many studies on flip chips with various solder ball compositions. However, studies on flip chips with Sn-1.0Ag-0.5Cu and Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu have rarely been attempted because of the unknown material properties. According to recent studies, drop simulations with these solder ball compositions have proven feasible. In this study, predictions of the impact lifetime by drop simulations are performed considering Cu and Cu/Ni UBMs using LS-DYNA to alter the design parameters of the flip chips, such as thickness of the flip chip and size of the solder ball. It was found that a smaller chip thickness, larger solder ball diameter, and using the Cu/Ni UBM can improve the drop lifetime of solder balls.
A HEV-relay plays a significant role as a mechanical switch which determines the operation of a gasoline engine or an electric motor in a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). The HEV-relay has critical two problems in the operating process. First, the unstable current can occur in the operating process of the HEV-relay due to the severe bounce between moving and fixed electrode. Second, noises occur due to impact between electrodes in HEV-relay. In this research, spring properties such as stiffness and initial compression force, and electrode shape are designed to reduce the bounce time and noises caused by impact between moving and fixed electrode. The operating process of HEV-relay is simulated using LS-DYNA3D as explicit finite element code. The optimum spring properties are determined using the response surface method (RSM) as the design methodology, and the electrode shape is newly designed through the modifying the stiffness of moving and fixed electrode.
