  • A risk assessment is performed at the initial design stage of LNG-fuelled ships subject to new fuel supply systems due to marine environmental and emissions regulations. Risk assessment involves a series of logical steps that enable systematic risk analysis and evaluation. LNG-fuelled ships mainly consist of a tank for storing LNG, a gas supply unit for supplying LNG to the engine, an engine using LNG as fuel, and a bunkering manifold for receiving LNG. The components of the LNG fuelled ship are determined according to the characteristics, size, rout, and operating distance. Therefore, the risk factors of each ships are different, and the risk analysis also changes. In this study we consider the systems of ships using LNG as a fuel and analyze the risk assessment of certain cases where the actual risk assessment has been carried out.

  • Because of emission control of greenhouse gas, shipbuilders, especially those in Korea, are pushing forward to introduce eco-friendly ship-building technology utilizing LNG. However, Technical skills of domestic shipbuilders in manufacturing the cryogenic pump designed to supply LNG for vessels are so low that technical skills for design and manufacturing of core parts are in urgent need. Therefore, This study described about the Rotor as a core part of cryogenic submerged centrifugal pump for ship LNG supply system. We wish to utilize for the basic data to develop the technology for the Rotor as deducing the optimal outcome with the experimental and the analytical methods in material selection.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the heat transfer characteristics of combustion gas or a mixture fuel of LFG and LNG as compared LFG, LNG A Pilot combustion system is constructed. Tube bundle type heat exchangers with vertical and horizontal baffles are used, and the experiment is carried out for different operating conditions, the heating value, the concentration of methane (44.5%, 54.5%). The results show that the Nusselt number of LNG is higher than that of LFG at the same Reynolds number, and in case LFG, the Nusselt number of the mixture of LFG and LNG is larger than that of LFG alone. Therefore, heat transfer is improved by using LFG that is added to LNG pertinently, if and instability of LFG supply will be relaxed.

  • Recently, for such reasons as its inexpensive price and eco-friendliness, LNG has been under the limelight as an alternative fuel for vessels and is expected to grow rapidly in the industry. However, the technology level of domestic shipbuilders in manufacturing the cryogenic pump designed to supply LNG for vessels is so low that design and manufacturing technology of core parts are in urgent need. Therefore, this study describes the stepwise development procedure of cryogenic submerged centrifugal pump for ship LNG supply system. And it aims to suggest practical and specific development methods of the pump by approaching the characteristics of each step and major development items from the standpoint of engineering and management.

  • While environmental concern is urging shipbuilding industry to reduce pollutant emission, it is necessary to design environmental friendly vessels. LNG as fuel for ship propulsion is proven to be effective way to reduce pollutant emission. In this study, we find optimum position of LNG fuel supply system on AHTS by considering vessel characteristic. Three different positions of fuel supply system are studied in this paper. Factors such as stability, strength and safety are examined in each position of fuel supply system.

  • LNG has significant advantages in regard to environmental aspects comparing with conventional fuel oil. In fact, it is estimated that NOx and SOx emission can be reduced by about 90% and 100%, respectively in case of using LNG as a fuel. LNG-fuelled ship has been considered to be the best option both from an environmental and an economic point of view. Along with these trends, some major shipyards and Classification Societies have started to carry out the risk-based system design for LNG-fuelled ship such as passenger ship, platform supply vessel and large container vessel etc. However, new conceptual gas fuelled ship has high risk level compared with vessel using traditional crude oil especially in view of gas explosion accident. Therefore safety area where installed fuel gas supply system is required risk based system design with special considerations. On this paper, the entire process necessary for the quantitative risk analysis was explained to meet the satisfactory safety level of gas fuelled ship.

  • Heavy oil used as ship propulsion has a serious issue regarding exhaust emission of global warming. Recently, among large-scale merchant ships are using LNG as green ships so called ech-ships. In this study, an vaporizer and pipes under cryogenic and high pressure load were considered to evaluate structural integrity according to codes. Structural analysis of the vaporizer and pipes was performed using the commercial code, ANSYS. Integrity evaluation of the vaporizer based on von Mises stress was performed in accordance with allowable stress specified in ASME Boiler & Pressure Vesssel Section VIII Division 2. To assess structural integrity of the pipes, stress components were combined and compared with ASME B31.3. The calculated stresses for all load cases are lower than allowable stresses, therefore the structural integrity of equipments are verified.
