  • This paper proposes a grid-tied power conditioning system for the fuel cell power generation, which consists of a 2-stage DC-DC converter and a 3-phase PWM inverter. The 2-stage DC-DC converter boosts the fuel cell stack voltage of 26-48V up to 400V, using a hard-switching boost converter and a high-frequency unregulated LLC resonant converter. The operation of the proposed power conditioning system was verified through simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC software. Based on the simulation results, a laboratory experimental set-up was built with a 1.2kW PEM fuel-cell stack to verify the feasibility of hardware implementation. The developed power conditioning system shows a high efficiency of 91%, which is a very positive result for the commercialization.

  • In this study, an integrated 2-in-1 transformer for a low-weight and low-cost light-emitting diode lighting power supply is proposed. In the transformer, a power factor correction (PFC) inductor and an LLC resonant transformer are placed and integrated on a single magnetic core. The amount of mutual interference, represented by the coupling coefficient, between magnetic fluxes generated from each magnetic source is minimized by using the new shape core of an integrated 2-in-1 transformer. The design consideration on critical conduction mode PFC converter and LLC resonant converter using the proposed 2-in-1 integrated transformer is described, and the overall performance of the 150 W LED PSU shown through the experiment.

  • Recently, it is increased to use the portable device with small size. It is also increasing for demand of a small size adapter. To reduce the size of components, switching frequency has to be increased. But it causes higher switching loss and temperature of components. Especially, the temperature of adapter must be limited because adapter can be easily touched when portable device is being charged. To reduce temperature of adapter, high efficiency is essential. To solve this problem, this paper proposes design of resonance frequency optimization for LLC converter with high efficiency and low temperature of passive components.

  • Recently, the high frequency link boost DC/DC converter has been used widely for PCS (Power Conditioning System) because of the requirements of small size and low cost. However, the high frequency link boost DC/DC converters applied the conventional voltage-fed converter and current-fed converter have some problems like high conduction losses and high surge voltage due to high circulating current and leakage inductance, respectively. To improve these problems, a novel secondary LLC (called SLLC) series resonant converter is proposed in this paper and its theoretical analysis, its operating waveforms, simulation and experimental results for a boost DC/DC converter using SLLC series resonant topology verifies the proposed topology. 800W experimental prototype is tested.

  • Power losses of a 1-stage DC-DC converter and 2-stage DC-DC converter are compared in this paper. A phase-shift full-bridge DC-DC converter is considered as 1-stage topology. This topology has disadvantages in the stress of rectifier diodes because of the resonance between the leakage inductor of the transformer and the junction capacitor of the rectifier diode. 2-stage topology is composed of an LLC resonant full-bridge DC-DC converter and buck converter. The LLC resonant full-bridge DC-DC converter does not need an RC snubber circuit of the rectifier diode. However, there is the drawback that the switching loss of the buck converter is large due to the hard switching operation. To reduce the switching loss of the buck converter, SiC MOSFET is used. This paper analyzes and compares power losses of two topologies considering temperature condition. The validity of the power loss analysis and calculation is verified by a PSIM simulation model.

  • This proposed paper aims for the high efficiency contactless power transfer in household dc power distribution. A 300 W five-level diode clamped multi-level converter with 300 Vdc input dc link bus is employed for the power transferring task and the output voltage range is controlled at 48 Vdc. The inner and outer solenoid coils are used for inductive power transfer (IPT) transformer with the 200 kHz switching frequency for designed power density. Therefore, to achieve the converter efficiency above 95%, the LLC series resonant with fundamental harmonic analysis (FHA) and the calculated switching angles are used as an optimized tool for designing the system resonant tank. The validations of this approached topology are illustrated in both MATLAB/Simulink simulation and implementation.

  • This study proposes a converter that makes battery charging, discharging, and zero voltage control possible. The proposed topology consists of an LLC converter and a half-bridge inverter, and all power semiconductor devices are applied Si-MOSFETs. The topology is designed with an LLC switching frequency of 100 kHz, a half-bridge inverter switching frequency of 50 kHz, and a battery voltage of 5 V. The advantages of the charging/discharging operation of the 5 V battery voltage and the zero voltage control of the battery are verified. In addition, by using a two-stage topology, the battery can be charged, discharged through current control, and discharged to zero voltage. With the proposed topology, the current can be maintained even when the battery voltage drops to zero.

  • A digital self-sustained phase shift modulation (DSSPSM) strategy that allows for good soft switching and dynamic response performance in the presence of step variations is presented in this paper. The working principle, soft switching characteristics, and voltage gain formulae of a LLC converter with DSSPSM have been provided separately. Furthermore, the method for realizing DSSPSM is proposed. Specifically, some key components of the proposed DSSPSM are carefully investigated, including a parameter variation analysis, the start-up process, and the zero-crossing capture of the resonant current. The simulation and experiment results verify the feasibility of the proposed control method. It is observed that the zero voltage switching of the switches and the zero current switching of the rectifier diodes can be easily realized in presence of step load variations.
