  • In this paper, we present a design of modem and vocoder digital signal processor (DSP) chips for CDMA mobile station. The modem chip integrates CDMA reverse link modulator, CDMA forward link demodulator and Viterbi decoder. This chip contains 89,000 gates and 29 kbit RAMs, and the chip size is $10 mm{\times}10.1 mm$ which is fabricated using a $0.8{\mu}m$ 2 metal CMOs technology. To carry out the system-level simulation, models of the base station modulator, the fading channel, the automatic gain control loop, and the microcontroller were developed and interfaced with a gate-level description of the modem application specific integrated circuit (ASIC). The Modem chip is now successfully working in the real CDMA mobile station on its first fab-out. A new DSP architecture was designed to implement the Qualcomm code exited linear prediction (QCELP) vocoder algorithm in an efficient way. The 16 bit vocoder DSP chip has an architecture which supports direct and immediate addressing modes in one instruction cycle, combined with a RISC-type instruction set. This turns out to be effective for the implementation of vocoder algorithm in terms of performance and power consumption. The implementation of QCELP algorithm in our DSP requires only 28 million instruction per second (MIPS) of computation and 290 mW of power consumption. The DSP chip contains 32,000 gates, 32K ($2k{\times}16\;bit$) RAM, and 240k ($10k{\times}24\;bit$) ROM. The die size is $8.7\;mm{\times}8.3\;mm$ and chip is fabricated using $0.8\;{\mu}m$ CMOS technology.

  • One of the most challenging issues when robots interact with the environment is to establish contact quickly and avoid high impact force at the same time. The proposed method implements the passive suspension system using the redundancy of the torque-controlled robot. Instead of utilizing the actual mechanical compliance, the distal joints near the end-effector are controlled to act as a virtual spring-damper system with low feedback gains. The proximal joints are precisely controlled to push the mid-link, which is defined as the boundary link between the proximal and distal joints, towards the environment with high feedback gains. Compared to the active compliance methods, the contact force measurements or estimates are not required for contact establishment and the control time delay problems do not occur correspondingly. The proposed method was applied to the landing foot control of the 12-DoF biped robot DYROS-RED in the simulations. In the results, the impact force during landing was significantly reduced at the same collision speed.

  • The development of multicast communication services in the Internet is expected to lead a stable packet transfer even though On-Line Games generate heavy traffic. The Core Based Tree scheme among many multicast protocols is the most popular and suggested recently. However, CBT exhibits two major deficiencies traffic concentration or poor core placement problem. Thus, measuring the bottleneck link bandwidth along a path is important to understand the performance of multicast. We propose a method in which the core router's state is classified into SS(Steady State), NS(Normal State) and BS(Bottleneck State) according to the estimated link speed rate, and also the changeover of multicast routing scheme for traffic overload. In addition, we introduce Anycast routing tree, an efficient architecture for constructing shard multicast trees.

  • This paper proposes fast millimeter-wave (mm-wave) beam training protocols with receive beamforming. Both IEEE standards and the academic literature have generally considered beam training protocols involving exhaustive search over all possible beam directions for both the beamforming initiator and responder. However, this operation requires a long time (and thus overhead) when the beamwidth is quite narrow such as for mm-wave beams ($1^{\circ}$ in the worst case). To alleviate this problem, we propose two types of adaptive beam training protocols for fixed and adaptive modulation, respectively, which take into account the unique propagation characteristics of millimeter waves. For fixed modulation, the proposed protocol allows for interactive beam training, stopping the search when a local maximum of the power angular spectrum is found that is sufficient to support the chosen modulation/coding scheme. We furthermore suggest approaches to prioritize certain directions determined from the propagation geometry, long-term statistics, etc. For adaptive modulation, the proposed protocol uses iterative multi-level beam training concepts for fast link configuration that provide an exhaustive search with significantly lower complexity. Our simulation results verify that the proposed protocol performs better than traditional exhaustive search in terms of the link configuration speed for mobile wireless service applications.

  • The dielectric characteristics of low-k interlayer dielectric materials was fabricated by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). BTMSM precursor was evaporated and introduced with the flow rates from 16 sccm to 25 sccm by 1sccm step in the constant flow rate of 60 sccm $O_2$ in process chamber. Manufactured samples are analyzed components by measuring FT/IR absorption lines. Decomposition each Microscopic structures through two-dimensional correlation analysis about mechanisms for the formation of SiOCH in $SiOCH_3$, Si-O-Si and Si-$CH_3$ bonding group and analyzed correlation between the micro-structure of each group. It is a tendency that seems to be growing of Si-O-Ci(C) bonding group and narrowing of Si-O-$CH_3$ bonding group relative to the increasing flow-rate BTMSM. The order of changing sensitivity about changes of flow-rate in Si-O-Si(C) bonding group is cross link mode$(1050cm^{-1})$ $\rightarrow$ open link mode$(1100cm^{-1})\rightarrow$ cage link mode $(1140cm^{-1})$.

  • We propose a millimeter wave (MMW)-based mobile hotspot network (MHN) system for application in high-speed railways that is capable of supporting a peak backhaul link throughput of 1 Gbps per train at 400 km/h. The MHN system can be implemented in subways and high-speed trains to support passengers with smart devices and provide access to the Internet. The proposed system can overcome the inherent high path loss in MMW through system designs and high antenna gains. We present a simulation of the system performance that shows that a fixed beamforming strategy can provide high signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio similar to those of an adaptive beamforming strategy, with the exception of 15% of the train path in which the network can use link adaptation with low-order modulation formats or trigger a handover to maintain the connection. We also demonstrate the feasibility of the MHN system using a test bed deployed in Seoul subway line 8. The backhaul link throughput varies instantaneously between 200 Mbps and 500 Mbps depending on the SNR variations while the train is running. During the field trial, the smartphones used could make connections through offloading.

  • Elastic Optical Networks (EONs) allow to solve the high demand for bandwidth due to the increase in the number of internet users and the explosion of multicast applications. To support multicast applications, network operator computes a tree-shaped path, which is a set of optical channels. Generally, the demand for bandwidth on an optical channel is enormous so that, if there is a single fiber failure, it could cause a serious interruption in data transmission and a huge loss of data. To avoid serious interruption in data transmission, the tree-shaped path of a multicast connection may be protected. Several works have been proposed methods to do this. But these works may cause the duplication of some resources after recovery due to a link failure. Therefore, this duplication can lead to inefficient use of network resources. Our work consists to propose a method of protection that eliminates the link that causes duplication so that, the final backup path structure after link failure is a tree. Evaluations and analyses have shown that our method uses less backup resources than methods for protection of a multicast connection.

  • Purpose : Recently, a number of rapid antigen detection tests have been available to diagnose group A streptococcal pharyngotonsillitis. The purpose of this study was to determine the sensitivity, specificity and consistency of the two rapid antigen detection tests. Methods : Among the patients who visited our clinic from November 2001 to February 2002, 61 patients who had clinical findings of pharyngeal erythema or edema, pharyngeal exudates and soft palatine petechiae were enrolled in our study. A total of 61 patients were tested with rapid antigen detection tests and throat culture. BD $LINK2^{TM}$ Strep A(Becton, Dickinson & Company, U.S.A.) and $QuickVue^{(R)}$ $In-Line^{TM}$(Quidel Corporation, U.S.A.) were selected for rapid antigen detection tests. Results : Of the 61 patients tested, 22 patients were confirmed as group A streptococcal pharyngotonsillitis by throat culture. The BD $LINK2^{TM}$ Strep A had a sensitivity of 81.8% and a specificity 89.7%. The positive and negative predictive values were 81.8% and 89.7%, respectively. The $QuickVue^{(R)}$ $In-Line^{TM}$ had a sensitivity of 77.3% and a specificity of 100%. The positive and negative predictive values were 100% and 88.6%, respectively. The kappa values of BD $LINK2^{TM}$ Strep A and $QuickVue^{(R)}$ $In-Line^{TM}$ were 0.72 and 0.81, respectively. Conclusion : In addition to high sensitivity, specificity and consistency, both kits are easy to use and simple to interpret, and therefore have the potential to be used with backup throat culture for diagnosis of acute pharyngotonsillitis.

  • In this paper we present development of microprocessor-based 8-channel statistical multiplexer (SMUX). The hardware design includes one Z-80A CPU board with the clock rate of 4 MHz, one 16 Kbyte ROM board for program storage, one 16 Kbyte dynamic RAM board and three I/O boards, all connected through an S-100 compatible tristate bus. The SMUX can presently multiplex 8 channels with data rates ranging 50 bps to 9600 bps, but can be reduced to accommodate 4 channels by having a slight modification of software and removing one terminal I/O board. The system specifications meet CCITT recommendations X.25 link level, V.24, V.28, X.3 and X.28. Significant features of the SMUX are its capability of handling 4 input codes (ASCII, EBCDIC, Baudot, Transcode), the use of a dynamic buffer management algorithm, a diagnostic facility, and the efficient use of a single CPU for all system operation. Throughout the paper, detailed explanations are given as to how the hardware and software of the SMUX system have been designed efficiently.

  • Digital Video Broadcasting - Satellite (DVB-S) [1] (EN 300 421(bibliography)) was introduced as a standard in 1994. However, by combing with higher order modulation, promise more powerful alternatives to the DVB-S / DVB-DSNG coding and modulation schemes. Variable rate coding and modulation (VCM) may employed to provide different levels of error protection to different service components. Adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) provides more exact channel protection and dynamic link adaptation to propagation conditions, targeting each individual receiving terminal. By these reasons, DVB-S2 introduced. This paper derives exact symbol error rate(SER) of 16-Amplitude Phase Shift Keying(APSK) modulation by using Craig's formula. 16-APSK modulation is used in DVB-S2. The difference between Union Bound and Craig's formula is 1.26dB in low SNR and 0.1dB in high SNR.
