Composite materials are created by combining two or more component to achieve desired properties which could not be obtained with the separate components. The use of reinforcing fillers, which can reduce material costs and improve certain properties, is increasing in thermoplastic polymer composites. Currently, various inorganic fillers such as talc, mica, clay, glass fiber and calcium carbonate are being incorporated into thermoplastic composites. Nevertheless, lignocellulose fibers have drawn attention due to their abundant availability, low cost and renewable nature. In recent, interest has grown in composites made from lignocellulose fiber in thermoplastic polymer matrices, particularly for low cost/high volume applications. In addition to high specific properties, lignocellulose fibers offer a number of benefits for lignocellulose fiber/thermoplastic polymer composites. These include low hardness, which minimize abrasion of the equipment during processing, relatively low density, biodegradability, and low cost on a unit-volume basis. In spite of the advantage mentioned above, the use of lignocellulose fibers in thermoplastic polymer composites has been plagued by difficulties in obtaining good dispersion and strong interfacial adhesion because lignocellulose fiber is hydrophilic and thermoplastic polymer is hydrophobic. The application of lignocellulose fibers as reinforcements in composite materials requires, just as for glass-fiber reinforced composites, a strong adhesion between the fiber and the matrix regardless of whether a traditional polymer matrix, a biodegradable polymer matrix or cement is used. Further this article gives a survey about physical and chemical treatment methods which improve the fiber matrix adhesion, their results and effects on the physical properties of composites. Coupling agents in lignocellulose fiber and polymer composites play a very important role in improving the compatibility and adhesion between polar lignocellulose fiber and non-polar polymeric matrices. In this article, we also review various kinds of coupling agent and interfacial mechanism or phenomena between lignocellulose fiber and thermoplastic polymer.
Dietary fiber is considered a feed ingredient with high nutritional value in the broiler feed industry. Pine chips contain a large amount of dietary fiber and require some modification for use as broiler feed. In this study, pine chips were subjected to steam explosion under different severity factor (Ro) conditions to improve the chemical and physical properties of dietary fiber. The highest water-holding capacity, oil-holding capacity, and swelling capacity were found for Ro 4.0, followed by Ro4.5 and 3.5. The optimal condition for the steam explosion was determined to be Ro 4.0 (reaction temperature of 210℃, and reaction time of 6.0 min). Under these conditions, the water-holding capacity, oil-holding capacity, and swelling capacity of steam-exploded pine chips were 8.3 g/g, 6.5 g/g, and 5.0 mL/g, respectively. This study may contribute to the application of lignocellulose and related products in the broiler feed industry.

Lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs) were prepared using a two-step deep eutectic solvent (DES) and enzymatic pretreatment followed by mechanical defibrillation, and we examined the effects of enzymatic pretreatment conditions on different characteristics of the LCNFs thus obtained. The LCNFs yielded using the two-step DES pretreatment (Enz-LCNF) exhibited a well-defibrillated entangled web-like structure with an average fiber diameter ranging from 15.7 to 20.4 nm. Furthermore, we found that the average diameter and filtration time of the Enz-LCNFs decreased with an increase in enzyme concentration and enzymatic treatment time, whereas we detected a concomitant reduction in the tensile strength of the Enz-LCNF sheets. The Enz-LCNFs were characterized by a typical cellulose I structure, thereby indicating that the enzymatic treatment causes very little damage to the crystalline form.
In this study, the effect of spray-drying conditions and surfactant addition on the spray-drying yield, morphological characterization, size distribution and re-dispersity in water of spray-dried lignocellulose nanofibril (LCNF) were investigated. The freeze-dried LCNF after solvent exchange had linear fiber morphology with a diameter of 70-300 nm, and the spray-dried LCNF showed rod-like particle morphology. The spray-drying yield and particle size of spary-dried LCNF at $140^{\circ}C$ was highest and smallest, respectively. As LCNF concentration and blowing rate decreased and increased, respectively, the spray-drying yield and particle size were increased. The highest spray-drying yield was found at distearyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DDAC) addition of 10 phr at $140^{\circ}C$. As the particle size decreased and the DDAC content increased, filtration time of spray-dried LCNF in water was decreased and increased, respectively.
Various cellulose nanofibers (CNF) with different morphology and chemical properties were prepared for the reinforcement of sheet of paper mulberry bast fiber. Lignocellulose nanofiber (LCNF), Holocellulose nanofiber (HCNF), alkali-treated HCNF (AT-HCNF), TEMPO-oxidated nanofiber (TEMPO-NF) and cellulose nanocrystal (CNF) were prepared and their addition effect on the properties of sheet of paper mulberry bast fiber were investigated. Air permeability, surface smoothness, and tensile properties were improved by increasing CNF addition. Its improvement may be due to the CNF deposited between and on paper mulberry bast fibers, which was confirmed by SEM observation.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of delignification on properties of lignocellulose nanofibers (LCNFs) prepared by wet disk-milling (WDM) after steam and ozone oxidation pre-treatments and their nanopaper sheets. Delignification treatment was effective to obtain fine morphology with uniform fiber diameter less than 35 nm without aggregation, and increased the specific surface area (SSA) and filtration time of LCNFs. In particular, SSA and filtration time of the LCNFs prepared by WDM after ozone pretreatment increased 1.5 and 5.4 times after further delignification. Delignification also increased whiteness and decreased the redness of nanopaper sheets. The highest color difference (41.9) before and after the delignification was obtained in LCNFs prepared by WDM after the steam pretreatment. Tensile properties of nanopaper sheets were also increased by further delignification. The highest tensile strength was found to be 142 MPa.

The applicability of oil palm EFB(Empty Fiber Bunch) to the papermaking process as a functional organic filler was investigated in this study. Since the EFB has similar chemical composition to the lignocellulose materials such as wood fiber, the fines of EFB was applied to the handsheet paper as an alternative to wood powder which were used as an organic filler to improve water removal efficiency and bulk. The experiments showed that the EFB fines resulted in the higher water removal efficiency at the wet pressing process and leaded to the higher bulk than those of wood powder. In case of 10 % addition of organic filler, the strength properties were not significantly changed. Those results suggested that the EFB could be used as a new organic filler for improving water removal efficiency and bulk property.

The quest to broaden the narrow range of feed ingredients available to pig producers has prompted research on the use of low cost, unconventional feedstuffs, which are typically fibrous and abundant. Maize cobs, a by-product of a major cereal grown worldwide, have potential to be used as a pig feed ingredient. Presently, maize cobs are either dumped or burnt for fuel. The major challenge in using maize cobs in pig diets is their lignocellulosic nature (45% to 55% cellulose, 25% to 35% hemicellulose, and 20% to 30% lignin) which is resistant to pigs' digestive enzymes. The high fiber in maize cobs (930 g neutral detergent fiber/kg dry matter [DM]; 573 g acid detergent fiber/kg DM) increases rate of passage and sequestration of nutrients in the fiber reducing their digestion. However, grinding, heating and fermentation can modify the structure of the fibrous components in the maize cobs and improve their utilization. Pigs can also extract up to 25% of energy maintenance requirements from fermentation products. In addition, dietary fiber improves pig intestinal health by promoting the growth of lactic acid bacteria, which suppress proliferation of pathogenic bacteria in the intestines. This paper reviews maize cob composition and the effect on digestibility of nutrients, intestinal microflora and growth performance and proposes the use of ensiling using exogenous enzymes to enhance utilization in diets of pigs.

The reduction of the energy consumption in papermaking process become more important issue because of the regulation of green house gas (GHG) emission. Since more than half of energy for papermaking process is consumed during drying process, the increase of the drying efficiency would be very important solution for saving energy and reduction of GHG emission. The improvement of drying efficiency could be very difficult for the liner board mill because the liner board are usually made of recycled paper, OCC (old corrugated container). The short fiber and fines originated the OCC lead to compact sheet structure and delay the water flow out during wet pressing process and drying process. The application of lignocellulose spacer could provide more loose wet sheet structure and result in the higher drainage rate and the improved drying efficiency. In this study, the effects of the application of lignocellulose spacer to the liner board mill were evaluated based on the mill trial. In order to overcome the common disadvantage of the spacer, the loss of strength properties, the spacer was pretreated with amphoteric polyelectrolyte during mill trial. The results showed the application of pretreated spacer improved the drying efficiency by reducing steam consumption. And the loss in the strength properties by the spacer could be supplemented by the pretreatment.

While the utilization of wood as a raw material in related industries has been increasing with the population increasing, the availability of wood from natural forests has continued to decline. An alternative to this situation is the manufacture of particleboard from non-wood lignocellulose materials through the modification of sandwich particleboard (SPb) using bamboo strands as reinforcement. In this study, strandsof belangke bamboo (Gigantochloa pruriens W) and tali bamboo (Gigantochloa apus) were utilized. The non-wood particles included sugar palm fibers, cornstalk, and sugarcane bagasse. The board was made in a three-layer composition of the face, back, and core in a ratio of 1: 2: 1. The binder used was 8% isocyanate resin. The sheet was pressed at a temperature of 160℃ for 5 min under a pressure of 3.0 N/㎟. Testing included physical and mechanical properties based on the JIS A 5908 (2003) standard, while acoustic testing was based on ISO 11654 (1997) standards. The results showed that using bamboo strands as reinforcement has an effect on the mechanical and physical properties of SPb. Almost all the types of boards met the JIS A 5908 (2003) standards, with the exception of thickness swelling (TS) and internal bond (IB) parameters. Based on the thickness swelling parameter, the C-type board exhibited the best properties. Overall, the B-type board thatused a belangke bamboo strand for the surface and sugarcane bagasse as the core underwent the best treatment. Based on the acoustical parameter, boards using a tali bamboo strand for the surface and sugar palm fiber as the core (E-type board) exhibited good sound absorption properties.
