This paper reviews the current state-of-the-art in the numerical evaluation of wind loads on buildings. Important aspects of numerical modeling including (i) turbulence modeling, (ii) inflow boundary conditions, (iii) ground surface roughness, (iv) near wall treatments, and (vi) quantification of wind loads using the techniques of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are summarized. Relative advantages of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) over Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and hybrid RANS-LES over LES are discussed based on physical realism and ease of application for wind load evaluation. Overall LES based simulations seem suitable for wind load evaluation. A need for computational wind load validations in comparison with experimental or field data is emphasized. A comparative study among numerical and experimental wind load evaluation on buildings demonstrated generally good agreements on the mean values, but more work is imperative for accurate peak design wind load evaluations. Particularly more research is needed on transient inlet boundaries and near wall modeling related issues.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the prediction accuracy of development large eddy simulation(LES) program for turbulent flow behind a bluff-body. The LES solver was implemented on parallel computer consisting 16 processors. To verify the capability of LES code, the results were compared with those of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) using standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model as well as experimental data. The results showed that the LES and RANS qualitatively well predicted the experimental results, such as mean axial, radial velocities and turbulent kinetic energy. In the quantitative analysis, however, the LES showed a better prediction performance than RANS. Specially, the LES well described characteristics of the recirculation zones, such as air stagnation point and jet stagnation point. Finally, the unsteady phenomena on the Bluff-body, such as the transition of recirculation region and vorticity, was examined with LES methodology.
A numerical simulation of an incompressible cavity flow is conducted using the hybrid turbulence model. The model adopted is a modified type of DES using k- ε two-equation model. Cavity geometry and flow condition are based on Cattafesta's experiment. Computational results are compared with the results of Cattafesta's experiment. The simulation successfully predicts the oscillatory features and the Strouhal number of the oscillation compares very favorably with that of the dominant mode of experimental data. Vorticity contours obtained from the simulation data are consistent with the smoke visualization of the Cattafesta's experiment. The coherent structures of cavity flow are also investigated using Q criterion.
Large eddy simulation (LES) is increasingly used as a tool for studying the dynamics of turbulence in combustion chamber flows due to the promise of wider generality and more accurate results compared to Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) models. This study presents the appropriate subgrid-scale(SGS) model in LES for predicting the turbulent flow field in the internal combustion engine. The study of the effects of model and numerical parameters such as discretization scheme, initial condition, time step and SGS model was performed. The results of LES using the SGS model were found to be in the good agreement with experimental data.
Jets in cross flow are of fundamental industrial importance and play an important role in validating turbulence models. Two jet configurations related to thermal fatigue phenomena are investigated: ${\bullet}$ T-junction of circular tubes where a heated jet discharges into a cold main flow and ${\bullet}$ Rectangular jet marked by a scalar discharging into a main flow in a rectangular channel. The T-junction configuration is a classical test case for thermal fatigue phenomena. The Vattenfall T-junction experiment was already subject of an OECD/NEA benchmark. A LES modelling and calculation strategy is developed and validated on this data. The rectangular-jet configuration is important for basic physical understanding and modelling and has been analyzed experimentally at CEA. The experimental work was focused on turbulent mixing between a slightly heated rectangular jet which is injected perpendicularly into the cold main flow of a rectangular channel. These experiments are analyzed for the first time with LES. The overall results show a good agreement between the experimental data and the CFD calculation. Mean values of velocity and temperature are well captured by both RANS calculation and LES. The range of critical frequencies and their amplitudes, however, are only captured by LES.

A large eddy simulation (LES) is performed for turbulent flow in a combustion device. The combustion device is simplified as a cylindrical chamber with sudden expansion. A flame holder is attached inside a cylindrical chamber in order to promote turbulent mixing and to accommodate flame stability. The turbulent sub-grid scale models are applied and validated. Emphasis is placed on the evaluation of turbulent model for the LES of complex geometry. The simulation code is constructed by using a general coordinate system based on the physical contravariant velocity components. The calculated Reynolds number is 5000 based on the bulk velocity and the diameter of inlet pipe. The predicted turbulent statistics are evaluated by comparing with the LDV measurement data. The Smagorinsky model coefficients are estimated and the utility of dynamic SGS models are confirmed in the LES of complex geometry.
This paper present result of numerical simulation of premixed combustion around a triangle Bluff Body. And a numerical simulation of a premixed flame stabilization by a bluff body was performed using LES Model. The calculated results from the LES showed a good agreement with experiment data than k-model. Premixture combustion has flammability limit, quenching distance, smallest ignition energy has the combustion quality of the back. Bluff body makes a recirculation zone. Therefor velocity of behind bluff body is very slow. It was caused by slowly position speed and the fire occurred after the Bluff Body. Occurrence of fire it made the waste gas of high speed and the thrust made well.

In this study, comparative analysis on the back-layer phenomena in the tunnel-fire driven flow is performed using numerical simulation with LES and RANS. FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulator) code is employed to calculate the fire-driven turbulent flow for LES and Smartfire code is used for RANS. Hwang and Wargo's data of scaling tunnel fire experiment are employed to compare with the present numerical simulation. The modeled tunnel is 5.4m(L) ${\times}$ 0.4m(W) ${\times}$ 0.3m(H). Heat Release Rate (HRR) of fire is 3.3kW and ventilation-velocity is 0.33m/s in the main stream. The various grid-distributions are systematically tested with FDS code to analyze the effects of grid size. The LES method with FDS provides an improved back-layer flow behavior in comparison with the RANS (${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$) method by Smartfire. The FDS solvers, however, overpredict the velocity in the center region of flow which is caused by the defects in the tunnel-entrance turbulence strength and in the near-wall turbulent flow in FDS code.
This study has numerically investigated the flame-acoustics interactions in the turbulent partially premixed flame field. In the present approach, in order to analyze the combustion instability, the present approach has employed the LES-based combustion model as well as the Helmholtz solver. Computations are made for the validation case of the partially premixed LIMOUSINE burner. In terms of the FFT data, numerical results are compared with experimental data. Moreover, Helmholtz equation in frequency domain is solved by combining CFD field data including the flight time from a nozzle to the flame zone. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made for the essential features of the combustion instability encountered in the partially premixed burner.

The paper presents a numerical simulation of flow of a turbulent boundary layer, representing a typical wind environment and matching a series of wind tunnel observations. The simulations are carried out at a Reynolds number of 20,000, based on the velocity U at a pseudo-height h, and large enough that the flow be effectively Reynolds number independent. Some wall models are proposed for the LES(Large Eddy Simulation) of the turbulent boundary layer over a rough surface. The Jenson number, $J=h/z_0$, based on the roughness length $z_0$, is 600 to match the wind tunnel data. The computational mesh is uniform with a spacing of h/32, as this aids rapid convergence of the multigrid solver, and the governing equations are discretised using second order finite differences within a parallel multiblock environment. The results presented include the comparison between wind tunnel measurements and LES computations of the turbulent boundary layer over rough surface.
