Aiming at the problem of non-stationary wind field simulation of downbursts, a non-stationary down-burst generation system was designed by adding a nozzle and program control valve to the inlet of the original wall jet model. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method was used to simulate the downburst. Firstly, the two-dimensional (2D) model was used to study the outflow situation, and the database of working conditions was formed. Then the combined superposition of working conditions was carried out to simulate the full-scale measured downburst. The three-dimensional (3D) large eddy simulation (LES) was used for further verification based on this superposition condition. Finally, the wind tunnel test is used to further verify. The results show that after the valve is opened, the wind ve-locity at low altitude increases rapidly, then stays stable, and the wind velocity at each point fluctuates. The velocity of the 2D model matches the wind velocity trend of the measured downburst well. The 3D model matches the measured downburst flow in terms of wind velocity and pulsation characteris-tics. The time-varying mean wind velocity of the wind tunnel test is in better agreement with the meas-ured time-varying mean wind velocity of the downburst. The power spectrum of fluctuating wind ve-locity at different vertical heights for the test condition also agrees well with the von Karman spectrum, and conforms to the "-5/3" law. The vertical profile of the maximum time-varying average wind veloci-ty obtained from the test shows the basic characteristics of the typical wind profile of the downburst. The effectiveness of the downburst generation system is verified.
Dam-break flow occurs when an elevated dam suddenly collapses, resulting in the catastrophic release of rapid and uncontrolled impounded water. This study compares laminar and turbulent closure models for simulating three-dimensional dam-break flows using OpenFOAM. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) model, specifically the k-ε model, is employed to capture turbulent dissipation. Two scenarios are evaluated based on a laboratory experiment and a modified multi-layered block obstacle scenario. Both models effectively represent dam-break flows, with the turbulent closure model reducing oscillations. However, excessive dissipation in turbulent models can underestimate water surface profiles. Improving numerical schemes and grid resolution enhances flow recreation, particularly near structures and during turbulence. Model stability is more significantly influenced by numerical schemes and grid refinement than the use of turbulence closure. The k-ε model's reliance on time-averaging processes poses challenges in representing dam-break profiles with pronounced discontinuities and unsteadiness. While simulating turbulence models requires extensive computational efforts, the performance improvement compared to laminar models is marginal. To achieve better representation, more advanced turbulence models like Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) are recommended, necessitating small spatial and time scales. This research provides insights into the applicability of different modeling approaches for simulating dam-break flows, emphasizing the importance of accurate representation near structures and during turbulence.

As the first step to investigate the nonlinear interactions between turbulence and marine structures inside a viscous NWT, a LES technique was applied to the turbulent channel flow for $Re_{T}=150$, in this paper. The employed models were 4 types, such as the Smagorinsky model, the Dynamic SGS model, the Structure Function model and the Generalized Normal Stress model. The simulated data in time-series for the LESs were averaged in both time and space and performed statistical analysis. And results of the LESs were compared with those of a DNS developed in the present study and two spectral methods by Yoon et al.(2003) & Kim et al.(1987). It seems to be quite difficult to evaluate their performances to the present problem, but is seen that the accuracy of LESs are still related to the number of grids(or fine grid size).
We investigated the Reynolds number effects on the flow over a twisted offshore structure in the range of 3×103≤ Re ≤ 1 × 104. To analyze the effect of the twisted surface treatment, a large eddy simulation (LES) with a dynamic subgrid model was employed. A simulation of the cylindrical structure was also carried out to compare the results with those of the twisted offshore structure. As Re increased, the mean drag and lift coefficient of the twisted offshore structure increased with the same tendency as those of the cylindrical structure. However, the increases in the mean drag and lift coefficient of the twisted offshore structure were much smaller than those of the cylindrical structure. Furthermore, elongated shear layer and suppressed vortex shedding from the twisted offshore structure occurred compared to those of the cylindrical cylinder, resulting in a drag reduction and suppression of the vortex-induced vibration (VIV). In particular, the twisted offshore structure achieved a significant reduction of over 96% in VIV compared with that of the cylindrical structure, regardless of increasing Re. As a result, we concluded that the twisted offshore structure effectively controlled the flow structures with reductions in the drag and VIV compared with the cylindrical structure, irrespective of increasing Re.
The appearance of a rivulet at the upper surface of a stay cable is responsible for rain-wind-induced vibration (RWIV) of cables of cable-stayed bridges. However, the formation mechanism of the upper rivulet and its aerodynamic effects on the stay cable has not been fully understood. Large eddy simulation (LES) method is used to investigate flow around and aerodynamics of a circular cylinder with an upper rivulet at a Reynolds number of 140,000. Results show that the mean lift coefficients of the circular cylinder experience three distinct stages, zero-lift stage, positive-lift stage and negative-lift stage as the rivulet located at various positions. Both pressure-induced and friction-induced aerodynamic forces on the upper rivulet are helpful for its appearance on the upside of the stay cable. The friction-induced aerodynamic forces, which have not been considered in the previous theoretical models, may not be neglected in modeling the RWIV. In positive-lift stage, the shear layer separated from the upper rivulet can reattach on the surface of the cylinder and form separation bubbles, which result in a high non-zero mean lift of the cylinder and potentially induces the occurrence of RWIV. The separation bubbles are intrinsically unsteady flow phenomena. A serial of small eddies first appears in the laminar shear layer separated from the upper rivulet, which then coalesces and reattaches on the side surface of the cylinder and eventually sheds into the wake.
This study is intended to present a computational thermal model for a residential building. As the Performance Based Design is more popular, fire-intensity and fire-load have turned out to be very important factors for building design and can be predicted through some computational work. To predict and estimate the fire properties of a residential fire, we made some numerical models of combustibles and residential building. In a bid to validate the estimate values, computational analysis results from numerical models were compared with real fire tests. For computational analysis, the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) was used with Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model for turbulence. Consequently, fire-intensity was well predicted and flash-over of rooms were successfully estimated.

This study investigates cavity flows through a guide grill above a resonator. Vortex distributions and intake flows are simulated for various shapes of the guide grill. The flows are assumed to be compressible, unsteady, and turbulent. Numerical simulations are conducted using a large eddy simulation (LES) model. To analyze the effect of the guide grill shape, three cavity lengths (0.2H, 0.6H, and 1.0H) and cavity angles ($30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$) are considered based on resonator height (H). The results show that the vortex generated in the resonator by cavity flow increases with cavity length. Thus, the intake flow is minimum at the smallest cavity length and angle. However, when cavity length is equal to resonator height, the intake flow decreases. The maximum intake flow occurs at a cavity angle $45^{\circ}$ at higher cavity lengths owing to the interaction between the vortex in the resonator and intake flow.
In this study, fire simulations were performed to analyze the characteristics of the fire driven flow and the effects of the platform screen door on the smoke flow in the station, when the fire occurred in the center of the platform. Soongsil Univ. station (line number 7, 47m in depth underground) was chosen which was the one of the deepest underground subway stations in the Seoul metro, SMRT. The parallel computational method was employed to compute the heat and mass transfer eqn's with 6 CPUs of the linux clustering machine. The fire driven flow was simulated with using FDS code in which LES method was applied. The Heat release rate was 10MW and The Ultrafast model was applied for the growing model of the fire source. The 10,000,000 structured grids were used.

In coastal regions, it is common to witness significant damages on low-rise buildings caused by hurricanes and other extreme wind events. These damages start at high pressure zones or weak building components, and then cascade to other building parts. The state-of-the-art in experimental and numerical aerodynamic load evaluation is to assume buildings with intact envelopes where wind acts only on the external walls and correct for internal pressure through separate aerodynamic studies. This approach fails to explain the effect of openings on (i) the external pressure, (ii) internal partition walls; and (iii) the load sharing between internal and external walls. During extreme events, non-structural components (e.g., windows, doors or rooftiles) could fail allowing the wind flow to enter the building, which can subject the internal walls to lateral loads that potentially can exceed their load capacities. Internal walls are typically designed for lower capacities compared to external walls. In the present work, an anticipated damage development scenario is modelled for a four-story building with a stepped gable roof. LES is used to examine the change in the internal and external wind flows for different level of assumed damages (starting from an intact building up to a case with failure in most windows and doors are observed). This study demonstrates that damages in non-structural components can increase the wind risk on the structural elements due to changes in the loading patterns. It also highlights the load sharing mechanisms in low rise buildings.
