  • To examine the effect of shape and crest width variation of a permeable submerged breakwater on the wave energy dissipation, Two-Dimensional numerical model with Large Eddy Simulation, which is able to simulate directly WAve Structure Seabed interaction (hereafter, LES-WASS-2D) has been newly developed. A good agreement has been obtained by the comparison between the existing experimental results and LES-WASS-2D model's results for the permeable submerged breakwater. Moreover, based on the LES-WASS-2D model, the wave energy dissipation due to a permeable submerged breakwater are discussed for regular and irregular waves with relation to its crest width and shape.

  • The computational flow analysis using LES technique was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics of a RAC chassis consisting of a rear-guider, a stabilizer and a cross-flow fan. The commercial SC/Tetra software was used in this analysis. In view of the results so far achieved, the distribution trends of static pressure and velocity vector of central region except the edges of a CFFan are similar regardless of the number of revolution, and an eccentric vortex exists around the bottom blade of a CFFan. Also, a reverse flow is found in the region between stabilizer and CFFan. Moreover, near the edges of a CFFan, an eccentric vortex is separated to two vortexes. Also these vortexes increase the velocity near a rear-guider, and guide the flow near a rear-guider into stabilizer inlet. Therefore, the reverse flow region is formed in the bottom of a CFFan.

  • This paper focuses on the processes of wind flow in atmospheric boundary layer, to produce realistic full scale pressures for design of low-rise buildings. CFD with LES turbulence closure is implemented on a scale 1:1 prototype building. A proximity study was executed computationally in CFD with LES that suggests new recommendations on the computational domain size, in front of a building model, apart from common RANS-based guidelines (e.g., COST and AIJ). Our findings suggest a location of the test building, different from existing guidelines, and the inflow boundary proximity influences pressure correlation and reproduction of peak loads. The CFD LES results are compared to corresponding pressures from open jet, full scale, wind tunnel, and the ASCE 7-10 standard for roof Component & Cladding design. The CFD LES shows its adequacy to produce peak pressures/loads on buildings, in agreement with field pressures, due to its capabilities of reproducing the spectral contents of the inflow at 1:1 scale.

  • A parallelized FEM code based on domain decomposition method has been recently developed for a large scale computational fluid dynamics. A 4-step splitting finite element algorithm is adopted for unsteady computation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation, and Smagorinsky LES(Large Eddy Simulation) model is chosen for turbulent flow computation. Both METIS and MPI library are used for domain partitioning and data communication between processors respectively. Tiburon of Hyundai-motor is chosen as the computational model at $Re=7.5{\times}10^{5}$, which is based on the car height. It is confirmed that the drag under road condition is smaller than that of wind tunnel condition.

  • The flow field around a symmetrical airfoil in a uniform flow under the generation of noise was numerically studied and compared with experimental datum. The numerical simulation was carried out by LES which employs a deductive dynamic model as subgrid-scale model. The result of an attack angle of $6^{\circ}$ indicate that the discrete frequency noise is generated when the separated laminar flow reattaches near the trailing edge of the pressure side and the turbulent boundary layer is formed over the suction side of the airfoil near the trailing edge. The periodic behavior of vortex formation was observed around the trailing edge and it persists further downstream in the wake. The frequency of the vortex formation in the wake was consistent with that of the discrete frequency noise.

  • Three-dimensional flow over the sand dunes have been studied numerically by using Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) method. In the direction of initial flow and span direction cyclic boundary conditions are imposed for velocity and pressure. The movement of the sand dune which is formed by converging wind direction has been investigated. The numerical method employed in this study can be divided into three parts: (i) calculation of the air flow over the sand dune using standard MAC method with a generalized coordinate system; (ii) estimation of the sand transfer caused by the flow through the friction; (iii) determination of the shape of the sand surface. Since the computational area has been changed due to step (iii), (i)-(iii) are repeated. The simulated dune, which has initially elliptic cross section, extends at the converging direction, which is known as linear dunes.

  • In this study, a CFD methodology is employed to address the problem of the prediction of the flow in a T-junction. An Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) approach has been selected for its low computational cost. Moreover, Unsteady Reynolds Navier-Stokes methodologies do not need complex boundary formulations for the inlet and the outlet such as those required when using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) or Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). The results are compared with experimental data and an LES calculation. In the past, URANS has been tried on T-junctions with mixed results. The biggest limit observed was the underestimation of the oscillatory behavior of the temperature. In the present work, we propose a comprehensive approach able to correctly reproduce the root mean square (RMS) of the temperature directly downstream of the T-junction for cases where buoyancy is not present.

  • 본 연구에서는 가장 최근에 NIST(National Institute of Standards and Technology)에서 LES(large eddy simulation)기법을 사용하여 개발한 3D 화재유동 해석용 FDS5의 중요한 기능 중 Werner-Wengle wall law의 성능을 평가하기 위하여 평행 평판에서의 유동을 조사하였다. 시뮬레이션으로 구하여진 결과는 DNS(Direct Numerical Simulation) 결과 및 이론값과 비교하여 분석하였다. 또한 FDS 결과를 RANS의 난류 유동 해석 결과와도 비교하였다.

  • With more and more high-rise building being constructed in recent decades, bluff body flow with high Reynolds number and large scale dimensions has become an important topic in theoretical researches and engineering applications. In view of mechanics, the key problems in such flow are high Reynolds number turbulence and fluid-solid interaction. Aiming at such problems, a parallel fluid-structure interaction method based on socket parallel architecture was established and combined with the methods and models of large eddy simulation developed by authors recently. The new method is validated by the full two-way FSI simulations of 1:375 CAARC building model with Re = 70000 and a full scale Taipei101 high-rise building with Re = 1e8, The results obtained show that the proposed method and models is potential to perform high-Reynolds number LES and high-efficiency two-way coupling between detailed fluid dynamics computing and solid structure dynamics computing so that the detailed wind induced responses for high-rise buildings can be resolved practically.

  • The process of the wind noise analysis around an OSRVM is developed and is verified by simulating unsteady flow field past a generic OSRVM mounted on the flat plate at the Reynolds number of $Re_D=5.2{\times}10^5$ based on the mirror diameter. The transient flow field past a generic OSRVM is simulated with various turbulence models, namely DES-SA, LES Constant SGS, and LES Dynamic SGS. The sound radiation is predicted using the Ffowcs- Williams and Hawkings analogy. For the present simulation, the 6.35million cells are generated. Time averaged pressure coefficients at 34 locations on the surface of the generic OSRVM are compared with the available experimental data. Also, 12 Sound Pressure Levels located on the surrounding mirror are compared with the available experimental data. Both of them show good agreements with experimental data.
