Visible Light Communication Method for Personalized and Localized Building Energy Management

  • The Paris agreement at the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) emphasizes the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and increase in energy consumption in all areas. Thus, an important aspect is energy saving in buildings where the lighting is a major component of the electrical energy consumption. This paper proposes a building energy management system employing visible light communication (VLC) based on LED lighting. The proposed management system has key characteristics including personalization and localization by utilizing such VLC advantages as secure communication through light and location-information transmission. Considering the efficient implementation of an energy-consumption adjustment using LED luminaires, this paper adopts variable pulse position modulation (VPPM) as a VLC modulation scheme with simple controllability of the dimming level that is capable of providing a full dimming range. This paper analyzes the VPPM performances according to variable dimming for several schemes, and proposes a VPPM demodulation architecture based on dimming-factor acquisition, which can obtain an improved performance compared to a 2PPM-based scheme. In addition, the effect of a dimming-factor acquisition error is analyzed, and a frame format for minimizing this error effect is proposed.

  • Visible light communication using LED is a technique for transmitting digital data using the light of the LED. Recently, high-speed data rate plays an important role. Therefore, many scholars have researched the MIMO-VLC which is able to increase data rate using a lot of LED transmitters. However, it has problems such as light interference and flicker when transmitting different bit. Many researcher have focused on reduce interference. However it is not considered about flicker problem. Flicker is defined unstable brightness. It occurred the tired of human eyes, lowers eyesight and also decreases concentration. In order to solve this flicker problem in MIMO-VLC, we propose the PFM(Parallel Flicker Mitigation) code. PFM code using combinatorial theory can maintain constant brightness the whole bit duration. Therefore, it is possible to assure the brightness by confirm simulation results.

Performance Improvement of VLC System using LED Module (LED 모듈을 이용한 VLC(Visible Light Communication) 시스템의 성능향상 방안)

  • In this paper, we implemented a VLC(Visible Light Communication) system capable of transmitting/receiving data on a 30MHz clock based on On/Off keying modulation/demodulation. The data rate of the implemented system can be verified by functional verification of VLC channel composed of LED/photodiode driver and VLC transmitting/receiving signal of Tx/Rx platform. But, In the experimental results with the VLC transmitting/receiving for combined module, the maximum transmission rate was measured at 15 MHz. Therefore, we describe the problems that can occur when implement the VLC system using the LED module with output power of 15W or more and propose ways to improve it.

  • In this paper, the visible light communication (VLC) techniques based on the carrier modulation are considered in order to realize the VLC application service that has the functions of the high speed optical sensing and the wide range reception from VLC transmitter. The VLC hardware circuits based on the 32.768 kHz low frequency carrier and 4 MHz high frequency carrier are designed and implemented respectively, and the signal waveform generated from the implemented circuits are observed. In addition, various performance experiments are done with the prototypes.

  • We perform simulation. It is that LED panels is fixed and moving the terminal with PD in order to analyze the performance of visible-light wireless communication system based on MIMO under variety of the interference environment. And, based on the technology MIMO, we analyzed whether the interference caused by external light to give what effect changes in the quality of the communication channel. The distortion due to time delay in channel transmission must be compensated by using the equalizer. Especially, use of equalizer is need absolutely as data rate becomes high speed. Therefore, in this paper, the system VLC, were analyzed BER performance using channel equalization.

  • In this paper, a transceiver of VLC (Visible Light Communication) using LED white lighting has been implemented. We analyzed differences between conventional wireless communication and VLC with high-speed data transmission in a variety of environments, and confirmed symbols which passed through a channel using QAM. In order to get a high data rate, we found some variables that should be considered essentially though experiments. In addition, we set a bandwidth and found an optimal gain according to the distance between transmitter and receiver. We analyzed proposed system model through Labview and finally showed a system performance and to efficient data transmission and detection for VLC, we apply the orthogonal sequences to VLC system.

  • In this paper, we present an indoor positioning system based on light emitting diode (LED). Because LED is a semiconductor light emitting device, we can easily switch and modulate electrical signals into lightwave signals at high speed using LEDs. We assigned unique 8-bit ID address to each LED lights. Photo diode receives data from 16-LED lights and takes correlation coefficient beteween received data and each LED-ID. Using correlation coefficient, proposed positioning system shows resolution of 50 cm in dimensions of $4\;m\;{\times}\;4\;m\;{\times}\;2\;m$.

  • Visible light communication is a communication method using an LED having a high-speed ON / OFF rate data to be transmitted, it is used as a wireless high speed data transmission. VLC system evolves, the problem of basic research is intended to improve performance and ensure reliability of the communication. The nature of the visible light communication, communication is performed only in the reach of the light, which indicates a big difference by the emission angle of the light. Therefore, in this paper, in the case of indoor environments generally, with the attributes of the multiple LED is equipped, was applied to a MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) communication system. and analyzed SNR performance and total power can be obtained on the reception side by changing the emission angle of the transmitter. As a result of the simulation was run against this, it was confirmed that there is a significant impact on the performance of BER and SNR performance by the emission angle of the transmitter.

  • As inexhaustible clean energy, solar energy will be the most ideal green energy in the 21st century. The effective method to convert solar energy into electrical energy is by solar photovoltaic power generation technologies. LED Emitting Diode is a kind of component which can transform electricity into visible light. As the smart current control system for photovoltaic street lights, the proposed system has improved the battery charging and discharging mechanism to extend the lifespan and effectively controls the LED discharge current according to battery charge state and lighting.

  • In this paper, we propose the multi-channel interference cancellation algorithm for visible light communication (VLC) in smart building. The VLC system is communication technology using visible rays that come out in Light Emitting Diode (LED) device. It has energy curtailment effect and possible to use in ubiquitous network service applications. When a large number of users communicate indoors, the performance can be reduced due to channel interference. To remove interference, at the first, the minimum mean square error (MMSE) scheme as interference cancellation methods used, and then the successive interference cancellation (SIC) is applied to obtain additional diversity gain and improve interference cancellation performance. Indoor VLC channel model is employed. The performance is evaluated in terms of bit error rate (BER). From the simulation results, it is confirmed that the proposed scheme has better BER performance compared to the previous systems. As a result, the proposed interference cancellation improves the signal quality of VLC systems by effectively removing the channel noise. The results of the paper can be applied to VLC for smart building and general communication systems.
