LED Headlight, Safety and Application in Oral Surgery (구강 수술에 사용가능한 LED 헤드라이트의 안전성 및 실용성)

  • Background and Objectives : LED(Light emitting diode) is recently introduced as a energy-saving light source in many area including agriculture and environment. In medical field it is known as bright and safe light source in surgical lighting including headlight. This study is aimed to test effectiveness and cost-saving of mountain-climbing headlight in comparison with xenon headlight. Materials and Methods : Internet market-available mountain-climbing headlight was compared with medical xenon headlight regarding heat generation after 30 minutes' usage, intensity of illumination and possible burn to the perioral skin. To get temperature data, 5 cases of tonsillectomy were done with the aid of LED headlight, while another 5 tonsillectomies were done using xenon headlight. Results : The temperatures of all light sources were below 45 degrees Celcius until finish of the surgery without burn or complications. No differences in operation time with both headlights. The maximal intensities of illumination were 24000 Lux for xenon, 20000 Lux for LED. Conclusion : Mountain-climbing headlight could be safe and helpful light source with low cost in simple oral surgery.

Design and Fabrication of a LED Headlight for Railroad Vehicles (철도차량용 LED전조등의 설계 및 제작)

  • Recently, application of LED luminaires has been issued for energy saving plan. In this paper, we carried out a study to replace a low efficacy sealed-beam lamp for headlight of railroad vehicles with LED luminaire. Electrical and optical characteristics of the sealed-beam lamp were analyzed and a LED headlight was designed and fabricated. Total luminous efficacy and rated power of the prototype LED headlight were 82 lm/W ; about 5 times higher, and 40W ; about 4 times lower than the sealed-beam lamp, respectively. Especially, lifetime of the sealed-beam lamp is short as 1,000 hours due to the evaporation and vibration of filament, but that of LED headlight is over 30,000 hours long.

Natural Cooling Characteristics of a Heat Sink for LED Headlight used in Passenger Cars (승용 전조등 LED 램프의 방열판 자연 냉각특성)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the cooling characteristics of a heat sink for an LED headlight used in passenger cars. To this end, this study conducts the experimental and numerical analysis of the heat sink heated at constant heat fluxes without air flow applied. In the experiments, heat was transferred at a constant heat flux through the bottom of a heat sink. The measured temperature on pre-selected locations of the heat sink was in good agreement with the numerically predicted one. The experimental and numerical results indicate that the convective heat transfer coefficient for the natural convection mode was decreased by increasing the heat flux applied to the bottom of heat sink, lowering the cooling capabilities.

  • Since LED lights have advantages of long life, low-carbon and high efficiency, they have been widely used as household lamps, automotive lighting, traffic lights etc. In this study, MCPCB LED lamps for automotive LED headlights were manufactured and the performance of heat release was optimized. The developed LED headlight satisfied the target thermal performance with heat pipes and fans, and it was also shown that fan life can be prolonged three times by fan on-off control.

Evaluation of the Functionality and Visibility of Commercial High-Visibility Clothing for Nighttime Usage (시판 야간 안전복의 기능성 및 가시성 평가)

  • To assist the further development of hight-visibility clothing this study compared the visibility and subjective wear sensation of commercial protective vests with retro-reflecting materials or LEDs. Nine subjects compared high-visibility vests to evaluate how easy they were to see when exposed to the headlight of a car at night, and the subjects assessed the wear sensation of the vests also. The intensity and visibility of five different colored LEDs assembled on the five substrates separately were also evaluated to select the suitable LED color for night protective clothing. The intensity of illumination was measured by an illuminometer, and the visibility was evaluated by 11 participants both in a dark room and in front of a car outdoors at night. Results showed, the most effective LEDs were high intensity LEDs which shift blinking red and white were most effective. However, excessively high intensity of illumination could decrease the working efficiency. In subjective wear evaluation, the most favorable vest had a front opening, were adjustable at the sides, and had an electric power switch on the front of the vest.

  • LED light sources have been known to have a long life and good energy efficiency compared to traditional light sources. Recently, headlamps using LED light sources have ensured the forward visibility and safe operation of high-speed rolling stock. However, assessing the lifespan of LED headlamps based on real test data is not easy because it depends on the multiple stress factors such as a fixed driving current, junction temperature, vibration and so on. Generally, LED headlamps have failed before their advertised life span mainly due to temperature. Thus, the performance assessment of a temperature control unit should be done before a life cycle test of LED headlamps. This study attempted to develop a prototype temperature control module for a lifecycle test system using a commercial LED headlight and verified the system through experiments.

Development of bicycle device to strengthen safety (안전 강화를 위한 자전거 장치 개발)

  • With the growing number of people using bicycle, the number of bicycle accidents also has been increasing. It is said that bicycle accident can be reduced up to 11%~44% when riding a bicycle if LED light is used. The headlight of the bicycle makes exposure effect to the opposite side of bike rider while taillight makes exposure effect to the rear bike rider for improving safety. Bicycle safety device capable of displaying a change of direction by LED is implemented in this study in response to control button signal. This signal makes LED light which is installed in pedal and wheel of bicycle as a module type emitting or flickering during the fixed hour. Bicycle auxiliary device in pedal which is able to improve safety using LED when bikers are riding a bike at night is developed in this study. Bicycle safety device applying wireless communication technology will be expected alternative technology in the future to solve a social problem such as energy, environment, and safety.

  • LEDs are considered to be an alternative for enhancement of energy efficiency, applied for numerous areas such as display, automotive headlight not only lights. Yellow phosphor is generally utilized with blue LEDs to generate WLED, $Y_3Al_{5}O_{12}:Ce^{3+}$ is typically used as the yellow phosphor. The phosphor, mixed with epoxy resin, has been used by being spread and hardened on the blue LED chip. This paste-based packaging gives rise to problems of degradation of phosphor by heat and decrease of luminous efficiency. Although phosphor plate is used instead of the epoxy-phosphor mixture to solve these problems, loss of luminous efficacy by total internal reflection inside the plate also should be solved. In this study, we coated the side of the plate with silver as one of the solution.
