  • The authors' research efforts recently led to the development of a customized wireless control unit which receives the real-time feedbacks from the sensors, and elaborates the consequent control signal to drive the actuator(s). The controller is wireless in performing the data transmission task, i.e., it receives the signals from the sensors without the need of installing any analogue cable connection between them, but it is powered by wire. The actuator also needs to be powered by wire. In this framework, the design of a power management unit is of interest only for the wireless sensor stations, and it should be adaptable to different kind of sensor requirements in terms of voltage and power consumption. In the present paper, the power management efficiency is optimized by taking into consideration three different kinds of accelerometers, a load cell, and a non-contact laser displacement sensor. The required voltages are assumed to be provided by a power harvesting solution where the energy is stored into a capacitor.

  • A boost converter with charge-recycling technique fabricated by $0.25{\mu}m$ CMOS BCD process can provide different supply voltages to drive series RGB LEDs in sequence for reducing the power consumption on the constant current generator. The proposed technique stores and restores extra energy to improve the efficiency, as well as enhances the reference tracking response. Experimental results show that the period of reference-tracking response can be improved. When the load current is 100mA, the periods of reference down-tracking and uptracking are smaller than $10{\mu}s$ and $20{\mu}s$, respectively. Experimental results demonstrate fast and efficient reference tracking performance is achieved.

  • The progress in flat panel displays over the last two decades has been astonishing. In just 20 years, the LCD-TV grew up from a 2-inch curiosity, to an industry that will sell about 120 million flat panel TV's this year, with viewing area up to 4000 times larger. That success is based on continuous innovation, especially in manufacturing processes. For the next decade to bring another doubling of the business, progress will need to continue in four major areas: Human factors, ecological impact, visual quality, and of course continued drive towards affordability. This talk will detail the technology advances that can allow this industry to meet those challenges. Human factors. Today, we adapt our lifestyle to our technology. People organize their offices, and their homes, around displays. We pass around mobile phones to share images, rather than experiencing them as a group. Billions of newspapers continue to be sold daily. Advances in flexible displays can lead to large portable displays. "New era projection" includes the handheld Pico Projectors that are already on the market, and will ultimately appear integrated in mobile phones the same way cameras do today. "Eco" impact. Today TV's are one of the top energy consumers in a U.S. home, and the fastest growing. Watching a large flat panel TV can cost twice as much as running a large refrigerator. With today's concern about energy consumption, regulations are starting to emerge worldwide to limit TV electrical use. Fortunately, good solutions exist in using light management films to eliminate bulbs, saving power without increasing cost. Going forward, LED backlights will drive another step downward. OLED displays might be the ultimate solution. Visual quality. The color of an LCD-TV is still often considered inferior to a far less expensive CRT. And almost all displays suffer from representing a three-dimensional world on a two dimensional surface. The technology to improve color is available today, and will likely move from premium sets into the mainstream as costs come down. 3D is now arriving in movie theaters worldwide, and that will drive up the demand for similar realistic images in home theaters. And the technology is emerging today for 3D representation to move beyond specialized applications into everyday use, on screens large and small. Affordability. The world takes cost-down miracles for granted in consumer electronics. Each of these other advances will be balanced with a drive for affordability, especially as the market grows in emerging countries. The other three challenges must be met without increasing cost. Putting this all together, the next few years will emphasize "eco friendly" designs, and enhanced images such as 3D. By 2013 we will start to see serious penetration by emissive technologies (OLED, high efficiency plasma, or other), with the "ultimate display" likely not in the market for a decade. Lots of opportunities for innovation remain ahead of us.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze kinematic quantitative factors required of a forehand counter drive in table tennis through 3-D analysis. Four national table tennis players participated in this study. The mean of elapsed time for total drive motion was $1.009{\pm}0.23\;s$. At the phase of impact B1 was the fastest as 0.075 s. This may affect efficiency in the initial velocity and spin of the ball by making a powerful counter drive. The pattern of center of mass showed that it moved back and returned to where it was then moved forward. At the back swing, lower stance made wide base of support and a stronger and safer stance. It may help increasing the ball spin. Angle of the elbow was extended up to $110.75{\pm}1.25^{\circ}$ at the back swing and the angle decreased by $93.75{\pm}3.51^{\circ}$ at impact. Decreased rotation range of swinging arm increased linear velocity of racket-head and impulse on the ball. Eventually it led more spin to the ball and maximized the ball speed. Angle of knee joint decreased from ready position to back swing, then increased from the moment of the impact and decreased at the follow thorough. The velocity of racket-head was the fastest at impact of phase 2. Horizontal velocity was $7796.5{\pm}362\;mm/s$ and vertical velocity was $4589.4{\pm}298.4\;mm/s$ at the moment. It may help increase the speed and spin of the ball in a moment. The means of each ground reaction force result showed maximum at the back swing(E2) except A2. Vertical ground reaction force means suggest that all males and females showed maximum vertical power(E2), The maximum power of means was $499.7{\pm}38.8\;N$ for male players and $519.5{\pm}136.7\;N$ for female players.

  • We have developed the Scan-backlight Stereoscopic LCD that is a kind of field-sequential -Stereoscopic LCD combining the Dual-Directional-Backlight and the fast-response OCB panel. The Dual-Directional-Backlight using a double-sided prism sheet can change the direction of light by switching the LED light sources. The OCB panel using Feed-Forward Drive can realize frame rate of 120 Hz. As a result, the Scan-backlight Stereoscopic display works at its original resolving power, and produces flicker-free stereoscopic images. This auto stereoscopic display can resolved the problems of the double images and the pseudoscopic images in case of watching at oblique angles.

  • In this paper, we propose an analog-to-digital converter to set the address of a I2C slave chip. The proposed scheme converts a fixed voltage between 0 and VDD to the digital value which can be used as the address of the slave chip. The rising time and the falling time are measured with digital counter in a serially connected RC circuit, while the circuit is being charged and discharged with the voltage to be measured. The ratio of the two measured values is used to get the corresponding digital value. This scheme gives a strong point which is to be implementable all the parts except comparator using digital logic. Although the method utilizes RC circuit, it has no relation with the RC value if the quantization error is disregarded. Experimental result shows that the proposed scheme gives 32-level resolution thus it can be used to configure the address of the I2C slave chip.

  • In diesel engine technology the drive to reduce emissions and fuel consumption with improved performance targets has led to many advances. In particular, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) have played a key role in achieving these aims by permitting flexible control of the engine inlet gas charge. The full potential of these devices are difficult to achieve due to limitations in the classical control methods. However, fuzzy logic is particularly appealing due to its simple heuristic nature. The controller used in this work was designed using the Matlab Fuzzy Logic Toolbox. The overall object is to access the potential for emissions and fuel consumption reductions during transient events whilst maintaining and even improving driveability. Classical control methods (PID), as used on production engines, are examined and contrasted with an coordinated control that utilizes fuzzy logic.
