  • This paper presents the vibration mode, natural frequencies and amplitudes of the circular plate due to the changes of the boundary conditions by varying free arc angles. The vibration mode, amplitudes and natural frequencies of the circular plate are obtained by time-average holographic interferometry and laser doppler vibrometer. The vibration modes of the circular plate with the mixed boundary conditions are found from the 1st mode to the 4th mode. The curve shapes of the natural frequency ratios obtained from this study are in a good agreement with other results obtained by numerical analysis. The displacement curves obtained from time average holographic interferometry and laser doppler vibrometer agree well in case of large amplitude, but show a little difference in case of small amplitude.

  • The effects of swirl on early flame development and late combustion characteristic were investigated using a high speed single-shot visualized 51 engine. LDV measurements were performed to get better understanding of the flow field in this combustion chamber. Spark plugs were located at half radius (R/2) and central location of bore. High speed schlieren photographs at 20,000 frames/sec were taken to visualize the detailed formation and development of the flame kernel with cylinder pressure measurements. This study showed that high swirl gave favorable effects on combustion-related performances in terms of the maximum cylinder pressure and flame growth rate regardless of spark position. However, at R/2 ignition the low swirl shown desirable effects at low engine speed gave worse performances as engine speed increased than without swirl. There were distinct signs of slow-down in flame growth during the period when the flame front expanded from 2.5mm in radius until it reached 5.0mm apparently due to the presence of ground electrode. There seemed to be heat transfer effect on the flame expansion speed which was evidenced in high swirl case by the slowdown of the late flame front presumably caused by relatively large heat loss from burned gas to wall compared with low- or no-swirl cases.

  • Nowadays, the improvement and development of Multi-media, information and communication technology are rapidly processed. And many products, for example, digital camera, digital camcorder, and PDA, are used for them. They need large data storage capacity and small size, light storage system. Due to that, many studies and researches in data storage system have been carried out. Especially, micro drive system was presented by IBM.(1) However, its system is expensive and uneasy to be portable. In ODD technologies, 1 inch drive system is not yet or in processing status.(2) If to be possible and to be come up, it is cheap than HDD system and easy to transfer information. In this paper, a miniaturized actuator(about linch) is designed and tested for ODD system. Specially, it is adapted for NFR(Near-field Recoding) system using SIL(Solid Immersion Lens). It is the dual-servo actuator which consists of a coarse actuator and fine actuator. Its actuating force generation method is VCM(Voice Ceil Motor). The fine actuator has 4-wire suspensions and bobbin wrapped by coil and includes focusing motion as well as tracking motion. The coarse actuator has an actuating coil and V-grooved guide mechanism. Also, the characteristics of the designed actuator is estimated by sine-swept mode and LDV(Laser Doppler Vibro-meter).

  • In this paper, a slim type actuator is proposed rising a bimorph PZT and a circular rotor link. The bimorph contacts the circular rotor, and its displacement generates the rotational motion of the rotor. The rotor causes the linear motion of AF and zoom lens through gear and a motion guide. The proposed model enables the actuations of many lens groups for zoom module by extending the single lens model. The important design parameter is the contact force determined by the frictional coefficient and preload between the rotor and PZT bimorph. A prototype of the single actuator model is manufactured and experiments results using LDV and tachometer are compared to the theoretical and numerical predictions. Experiments show the linear bimorph actuator model meets the performance criteria of the lens actuation, and it can be applicable to various slim type actuators for AF and zoom motions in mobile cameras.

  • During the past five decades or so, the characteristics of turbulent swirling flow have been studied extensively because of its great technological and scientific importance. It is well known that the swirling flow improves heat transfer in duct flow. The reason for this is due to the effect of streamline curvature associated with the tangential velocity component. Although many studies have been carried out to investigate the characteristics of the swirling flow in a circular tube. The experimental methods for measuring the velocity components are by hot-wire or LDV (Laser-Doppler-Velocimetry) measuring single point velocity so far. The present study was aimed to analyse the flow characteristics of swirling flow such as time-mean velocity vector, local velocity turbulence intensity and turbulence kinetic energy by using PIV(Particle-Image Velocimetry). The experiment was carried out for four Reynold numbers $1.0\times10^{4}$, $1.5\times10^{4}$, $2.0\times10^{4}$ and $2.5\times10^{4}$ of the measuring area.

  • In the present study, velocity profile and wall shear stress distributions of developing turbulent oscillatory flows in an oscillator connected to straight duct located in exit region of a curved duct was investigated experimentally. The experimental study for air flows was conducted to measure axial velocity profiles, shear stress distributions by using the Laser Doppler Velocimetry(LDV) system with the data acquisition and processing system of Rotating Machinery Resolver(R.M.R) and PHASE software. The results obtained from experimental studies are summarized as follows. The critical Reynolds number for a change from transitional oscillatory flow to turbulent flow was about 7500, in the 60region of dimensionless axial position which was considered as a fully developed flow region. The turbulent oscillatory flow, velocity profiles of the inflow period in the entrance region were gradually developed, but those of the outflow period were not changed nearly. Velocity profiles of inflow and outflow were shown as a symmetric form in a fully developed flow region. The wall shear stress distributions of turbulent oscillatory flow increase rapidly as the flow proceeds to downstream and flow was in good agreement with the theoretically.

  • The experimental study is carried out to identify the combustion generated noise mechanism in free turbulent jet diffusion flames. Axial mean fluctuating velocities in cold and reacting flow fields were measured using hot-wire anemometer and LDv.The overall sound pressure level and their spectral distribution in far field with and without combustion were also measured in an anechoic chamber. The axial mean velocity is 10-25% faster and turbulent intensities are about 10 to 15% smaller near active reacting zone than those in nonreacting flow fields. And sound pressure level is about 10-20% higher in reacting flow fields. It is also shown that the spectra of the combustion noise has lower frequency characteristics over a broadband spectrum. These results indicate that the combustion noise characteristics in jet diffusion flames are dominated by energy containing large scale eddies and the combusting flow field itself. Scaling laws correlating the gas velocity and heat of combustion show that the acoustic power of the combustion noise is linearly proportional to the 3.8th power of the mean axial velocity rather than 8th power in nonreacting flow fields, and the SPL increases linearly with logarithmic 1/2th power of the heat of combustion.

  • An experimental study on the flow over the axisymmetric backward-facing step was carried out. The purposes of the present study are to investigate the effect of the free stream turbulence intensity on the reattachment length and to understand the turbulence structure of the recirculating flows. Local mean and fluctuating velocity components were measured in the separated and reattaching axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer over the wall of convex cylinder placed in a water tunnel by using 2-color 4-beam fiber optics laser Doppler velocimetry. As the free stream turbulence intensity increased, the reattachment length became shorter due to the enhanced mixing in the separated shear layer. It was also observed that the reverse flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy increase with increasing free stream turbulence intensity. Spectral data and flow visualization showed that low-frequency motions occur in the separated flow behind a backward-facing step. These motions have a significant effect on the time-averaged turbulence data.

  • As track density needs to increase to the order of 10, 000 tpi, the suspension has become a critical component in hard disk drives. One of the main obstacles to attain high track density is the structural resonances of the suspension in lateral direction. We investigate the suspension dynamics through the experimental modal analysis and the finite element method. An LDV (Laser Doppler Vibrometer) is employed to measure the response of the suspension which is excited by a shaker and an inpulse hammer for the free condition and the loaded condition, respectively. After comparing the experimental and numerical results, we study how the initial geometry of the bend region affects the suspension dynamics. It is found that the natural frequency of the sway mode decreases as the bend ratio and the bend angle increase. The shape of torsional mode changes as the mass of a slider increases, resulting in a local decrease in the natural frequency.

  • A turbulent non-premixed ethylene flame, which was set up in a vertical wind tunnel, was examined to understand the effect of turbulent mixing on formations of soot and gaseous species in the flames. Temperature and velocity profiles were measured using uncoated thermocouples and LDV system. Gaseous samples were withdrawn by using a water cooled stainless iso-kinetic gas sampling probe. The samples for inorganic compounds and light hydrocarbons were collected with sampling bottles and were analyzed by a gas chromatography. The samples for aromatic hydrocarbons were collected on a sorbent tube and were analyzed on a GC/MS system. Some of main results were followed. CO and $CO_2$ were measured relatively in early part of flame and the concentration of CO was greater than that of $CO_2$ all over the early flame region due to the scavenging of the oxidizing species OH by soot particles. Aromatic hydrocarbons were measured at x/D=122 along the radial direction and main important species were benzene, xylene, toluene, styrene, indene, naphthalene. The peak points of these compounds occurred at r/D=0.8 apart from the center of flame, around in which the concentration of $C_2H_2$ decayed relatively rapidly from the maximum value.
