  • In order to satisfy with the clear visibility without any difficulties such as blurring and tailing, the high refreshing rate technology and fast response time of LC itself were applied to TFT-LCDs. In proportion to the decrease of holding time of 1 frame, the fast transition of LC behavior was necessary to both maintain the luminance and minimize the tailing appearance. The introduction of a new LC mixture for faster response times was realized by the good combination of newly introduced dielectrically neutral LC material so called 'Super Low Viscosity' (SLV) and highly polar $CF_2O-linkage$ LC material. This resulted in about a 20% reduction in the ${\gamma}_1$ of the new LC mixture compared to the references. In accordance with a new LC mixture with low ${\gamma}_1$, fast response time of 5ms has been made for S-IPS LCD TV application. Consequently, by applying the high frame frequency of 120Hz driving alongside the 5ms response time characteristics, the MPRT value was reduced by half.

  • Low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) technology has continued to mature with the passing of each year since LTPS mass production began. The integration of complex circuits has become possible with advances in microprocessing, leading to the realization of panels with highly advanced functions. At the same time, efforts have been made to meet market demands for lower costs, thereby boosting competitive strength. Today, LTPS-TFT LCDs have become standard equipment for the monitors of digital still cameras, and inroads are being made into the massive cellular phone market. Micro displays such as electronic viewfinders, which were previously only possible with high-temperature polysilicon technology, can now also be made with LTPS, thus expanding the scope of the technology. AMOLED displays using the LTPS-TFT as a back plane are also approaching the stage of industrialization. The hidden potential for the OLED to replace the familiar LCD has prompted Widespread anticipation for this emerging technology. This paper reflects on the history of LTPS technology, then looks forward to its future prospects and suggests a variety of potential fields of application.

  • To be able to show moving images without visual problems like blurring and tailing, the response time of liquid crystal display (LCDs) must be improved. In this paper we will discuss our progress in improving the response time by optimizing the cell configuration and the use of new liquid crystal mixtures. A 20.1inch diagonal UXGA IPS TFT-LCD has been developed having a response time as fast as l-frame time (16msec) for white-black operation and less than 16msec in all gray levels without applying ODC (Over Driving Circuit). This is very important because one of the technology to reduce motion blurring, the use of scanning backlight is conditioned by 16msec for all grays. The excellent gray-to-gray response can be explained by virtue of fundamental characteristics of S-IPS mode and makes a good contrast with the results of VA mode.

  • Reflective mode liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) microdisplay is the major technology that can produce extremely high-resolution displays. A very large number of pixels can be packed onto the CMOS circuit with integrated drivers that can be projected to any size screen. Large size direct-view thin film transistor (TFT) LCDs becomes very difficult to make and to drive as the information content increases. However, the existing LC alignment technology for the LCoS cell fabrication is still the mechanical rubbing method, which is prone to have minor defects that are not visible normally but can be detrimental if projected to a large screen. In this paper, application of photo-alignment to LCoS fabrication is presented. The alignment is done by three-step exposure process. A MTN $90^{\circ}$ mode is chose as to evaluate the performance of this technique. The comparison with rubbing mode shows the performance of photo-alignment is comparable and even better in some aspect, such as sharper RVC curve and higher contrast ratio.

  • We have investigated the generation of pretilt angle for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with in-situ photoalignment method on polyimide (PI) surfaces using thin plastic substrates. The LC aligning capabilities and pretilt angle of the thin plastic substrates by in-situ photoalignment method were better than that of the glass substrate by general photoalignment. Also, the LC pretilt angle increased with increasing heating temperature and exposure time. And EO characteristics of photoaligned TN-LCDs using in-situ photodissociation method on glass substrate and on plastic substrate are also excellent.

  • An active-matrix LCD using thin film transistors (TFT) has been widely recognized as having potential for high-quality color flat-panel displays. Pixel-Design Array Simulation Tool (PDAST) was used to profoundly understand the gate signal distortion and pixel charging capability, which are the most critical limiting factors for high-quality TFT-LCDs. Since PDAST can simulate the gate, data and pixel voltages of a certain pixel on TFT array at any time and at any location on an array, the effect of the resistivity of gate line material on the pixel operations can be effectively analyzed. The gate signal delay. pixel charging ratio, level-shift of the pixel voltage were simulated with varying the parameters. The information obtained from this study could be utilized to design the larger area and finer image quality panel.

  • In this paper, we propose a new optical thresold generator as a key-stream genrator for stream cipher systems. The random key-bit stream is generated by a digital generator that is composed of LFSRs and nonlinear ligics. Digital implementatin of a key-stream generator requires large memory to implement programmable tapping points. This memory problem may be overcome easily by using the proposed optical system which has the proberty of 2D parallel processing. To implement hte threshold generator optically, we use conventional twisted nematic type SLMs (LCDs). This proposed system is based on the shadow casting technique for the AND operation between taps and sregister stages. It is also based on the proposed PMRS method for modulo 2 addition. The proposed PMRS method uses the property of light's polarization on LCD and can be implemented optically using one LCD and some mirrors. One of the major advantages of the proosed system is that there is no limitation of the number of the progarmmable tapping points. Therefore, the proposed system can be applied for the 2D encryption system which processes large amounts of data such as 2D images. We verify the proposed system with some simulation.

  • The light guide plate (LGP) provides a surface light source on the back of the liquid crystal display (LCD), which is not self-emitting; thus, it is an essential component of display units requiring sufficient brightness. To maximize the light-emitting effect of an LGP, enough incident light, from the light source, should enter into its side. However, the current trend in LCD panels is represented by larger and thinner screens and this smaller thickness prevents the accordingly thin LGPs from providing sufficient brightness. This paper proposes a process for manufacturing wedge-type LGPs, which might increase the amount of incident light and, consequently the surface light emission, for applications in large LCDs. The proposed method was validated by building a dedicated manufacturing machine and performing illuminance experiments on the fabricated LGP.

  • We can see the motion blur phenomenon on theedge of the moving picture when it moves in the LCDs. To reduce this phenomenon, we suggested a new over-deriving method, implemented on the board XUP Virtex-2 Pro Development System by using Virtex-2 Pro XUP XC2VP30 and improved the Motion Blur. In this method, we did not use additional parts except for a SDRAM. Hardware implementation for IP and data interface were handled in software. In this paper, we used the moving bar and the moving video image as a design model. We also showed that the afterimage was reduced and the vivid moving images was displayed. through this method.
