  • The residual DC properties in the in-plane switching (IFS) liquid crystal displays(LCDs) which have different concentrations of cynao NLCs and different resistivities of fluorine NLCs were studied. We also propose a new residual DC measurement method, named 'light minimum/maximum method'. We confirmed the precision of residual DC measurement by light minimum/maximum method compared with the flicker minimizing method and found that new measurement method of residual DC is better than that of the conventional flicker minimizing method since the resolution level of measurements is in 0.1V

  • Comparing with conventional STN-LCD, a good electro-optical characteristics were observed on the STN-LCDs of low cell gap using liquid crystals that have large refractive indices. Especially, A stable voltage-transmittance(V-T) curve of the plastic STN-LCD was measured and fast response time characteristics were obtained. We suggested that fast response STN-LCD is promising technique in the flexible display of small size because it has lots of advantages such as low cost, simple manufacture process comparing with other modes.

제작된 소자들로부터 측정된 이동도는 $100{\sim}400Cm^2$/Vs, on/off 전류비는 약 $10^7$, off-state 전류는 약 $100{\times}10^{-12}A$로 대체적으로 우수한 특성을 보였다.

  • We have performed computer simulation to obtain electro-optic characteristics of reflective hybrid aligned nematic liquid crystal displays (LCDs) driven by fringe field. The results show that the optimal retardation value (dΔn) of the cell is 0.289 ${\mu}$m, which allows for the cell to have a practical cell gap of larger than 3 ${\mu}$m when manufacturing. A reflectance of the dark state is only 0.114 % for an incident light 550 nm. At this condition, the light efficiency of white state reaches 92.7 %. The display with optimized cell parameters shows that the contrast ratio greater than 5 exists over 600 of polar angle in all directions and lower driving voltage than that of fringe-field driven homogeneously aligned reflective LCD.

  • A glass transfer robot is used for handling LCDs in the production line of flat panel displays under clean environments. During glass transfer operations of the robot, chattering phenomenon occurs at the robot hand. This deteriorates the accuracy and repeatability of the end-effector of the robot. In this paper, we present the kinematic solution of the robot and then analyze the cause of this chattering phenomenon in view of the mechanism and servo control and propose a practical solution that can reduce the chattering significantly at the robot hand of the glass transfer robot.

  • A low-power source driver for TFT-LCDs has been proposed using the triple charge sharing method that enhances the AC power saving efficiency of the prior charge sharing method. The AC power saving efficiency of the proposed source driver reaches 66.6%. In addition, a novel OP-AMP with low-quiescent current has been developed. The measured quiescent current of the OP-AMP is $5{\mu}A{\sim}7{\mu}A$ at VDD=5V and VSS=0V with load resistance of $2k{\Omega}$ and load capacitance of 300pF.

  • Large size poly-Si TFT-LCDs have been fabricated using p-channel thin film transistors for notebook PC application. We have designed and implemented the data sampling circuit and gate drivers that operate with low power consumption and high reliability. The gate driver has a redundant structure. We have realized the uniform and excellent display quality comparable to that of CMOS module. The reliability of panel is investigated and discussed by measuring the bias stability of transistors.

  • The design of large area thin film transistor liquid crystal displays (TFT-LCDs) requires consideration of cross-talks between the data lines and pixel electrodes. These limits are imposed by the mutual coupling capacitances present in a pixel. The mutual coupling capacitance causes a pixel voltage error. In this study, semi-empirical model, which is adopted from VLSI interconnection capacitance calculations, is used to calculate mutual coupling capacitances. With calculated mutual coupling capacitances and arbitrary given image pattern, the root mean square (RMS) voltage of pixel is calculated to see vertical cross-talk from the first to the last column. The information obtained this study can be utilized to design the larger area and finer image quality panel.

  • Recently, the demands of the high quality LCD display device have increased. We have developed the smart LCD that photo sensor is integrated in. Amorphous silicon TFTs have photo leakage current characteristics when the channel of TFTs are lighted on. This characteristic has applied in our device. We expect that photo sensor integrated LCDs have lots of merits in mobile display device, note PC panel and LCD TV.

  • Photoaligning polymers usually possess "sofe" surface, containing flexible groups and provide relatively small anchoring energy($W<10^{-2}$ erg $cm^{-2}$). In this case field-induced reorientation of director on the aligning surface is essential. We have shown that surface director reorientation can modify the aligning surface and result in gliding of the axis of easy orientation of LC. this phenomena together with adsorption/desorption of ions in electric field cause strong sticking effect in LCDs photoaligning materials. We proposed a method of decreasing of the sticking effect based on irradiation of the photoaligning surface by an unpolarized light.
