  • In recent years, we use overdriving scheme to improve the response time of the liquid crystal. Since conventional overdriving scheme uses memory to perform ideal processing, it is desired to reduce system cost by decreasing the data stored in these SDRAMs. As a general compression method, quantization, sub-sampling and Block Truncation Coding ( BTC ) are used, which process data in block base and cause block effect. So we proposed new data compression method by color space conversion. Because this method compresses luminance and chrominance signal by different ratio, it can efficiently reduce error of block effect in decompression image.

  • We investigated the electro-optical(EO) performances of the super twisted nematic liquid crystal display(STN-LCD) on the polyimide(PI) surface using polymer film. The NLC pretilt angles generated are about $18^{\circ}$ by the rubbing alignment method on thin plastic substrates. However, the pretilt angle are at about $13^{\circ}$ lower on the glass substrate than on thin plastic substrate. Monodomain alignment of the plastic STN-LCD can be observed. A stable voltage-transmittance(V-T) curve of the plastic STN-LCD was observed on the polyimide(PI) surfaces using polymer film. Also, a faster response time for the plastic STN-LCD on the polyimide(PI) surfaces using polymer film can be achieved.

  • In this study, a very small LED packaging lead frame with a low thermal resistance was developed. The cost of the package process was reduced by the use of many small LED lamps, which increased the light emission efficiency. Compared to the large lead frame lamp, however, the optical property of the small LED packaging lead frame lamp was not sufficiently improved because its reflection structure was changed and its reflection area was reduced. The luminous efficiency of the LED lamp reaches 58 lm/W at the current density of 0.16 A/$cm^2$. Using the LED lamps, 46-inch LCD BLU was manufactured. The BLU-made LED lamps have a low power consumption of 146 W and have a slim (10-mm-thick) BLU, keeping good uniformity in terms of brightness, and maintaining good thermal properties.

  • A new Op-Amp output buffer is presented for driving large-size LCD panels. The proposed Op-Amp is designed by combining a common source and a common drain amplifier to have a high slew rate and to minimize the quiescent current. The proposed circuits are simulated in a high-voltage 0.6${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ CMOS process, dissipates only 20${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ static current, and have 83dB open-loop DC gain and 60$^{\circ}$phase margin.

  • In this study, LCD Cell process has been analyzed through ARENA simulation. The major concern is to find the condition maximizing production rate (or quantity per hour). For the analysis, we have selected 4 factors and performed simulation experiments through $L_8(2^7)$ orthogonal arrays. Our results indicate that the production may be maximized with well selected conditions proposed in this study. The results obtained from this study may provide a good base for practical applications.

  • We have developed $EPLaR^{TM}$, a new way of making flexible electrophoretic displays. The TFTs have the same good performance, reliability and mature manufacturing processes as TFTs used in LCD monitors and LCD-TVs. We are working with partners to show that plastic displays can be made in existing TFT-LCD factories alongside glass LCDS. In this talk we describe the EPLaR process and show results for TFT arrays on plastic made in a factory by standard ${\alpha}$-Si TFT processing.
