  • To find a recycling method for waste liquid crystal display (LCD) panel glasses, we investigated the synthesis process of zeolite with an ion exchange ability by hydrothermal reaction using waste LCD panel glass as a raw material. It was shown that the waste LCD panel glass can be used as a raw material for the production of zeolites having the ion exchange ability. Following conditions for the synthesis of the zeolite with an ion exchange ability were required : the molar ratio of Si to Al components of the waste LCD glass needs to be 2.0 to 2.8, and the temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and reaction time of 12 hours are needed for the hydrothermal reaction. Based on the required conditions previously mentioned, the A type zeolite was synthesized when the molar ratio of the Si to Al component was 2.0, and the P type zeolite was produced when the molar ratio was 2.8. The type A zeolite synthesized by using the waste LCD panel glass showed a good ion exchange ability and heavy metal adsorption ability. Also, an excellent ion exchange capacity was observed as the crystal phase grows stably in a cubic phase.

  • The effects of plasma damages to the organic thin film transistor (OTFT) during the fabrication process are investigated; metal deposition process on the organic gate insulator by plasma sputtering mainly generates the process induced damages of bottom contact structured OTFTs. For this study, various deposition methods (thermal evaporation, plasma sputtering, and neutral beam based sputtering) and metals (gold and Indium-Tin Oxide) have been tested for their damage effects onto the Poly 4-vinylphenol(PVP) layer surface as an organic gate insulator. The surface damages are estimated by measuring surface energies and grain shapes of organic semiconductor on the gate insulator. Unlike thermal evaporation and neutral beam based sputtering, conventional plasma sputtering process induces serious damages onto the organic surface as increasing surface energy, decreasing grain sizes, and degrading TFT performance.

  • This paper presents an automatic LCD gamma control system using gamma curve optimization. It controls automatically gamma adjustment registers in mobile LCD driver IC to reduce gamma correction error and adjusting time. The proposed gamma system contains Module-Under-Test (MUT, LCD module), PC installed with program, multimedia display tester for measuring luminance, and control board for interface between PC and LCD module. Proposed algorithm and program are applicable for most of the LCD modules. It is realized to calibrate gamma values of 1.8, 2.0, 2.2 and 3.0. The control board is designed with DSP and FPGA, and it supports various interfaces such as RGB and CPU. Developed automatic gamma control system showed significantly reduced gamma adjusting time of 240 sec. and much less average gamma error of 11% than 42h and 27% with conventional manual method. We believe that the proposed system is very useful to provide high-quality LCD and to improve production process.

  • A novel transflective-type LC mode with good display performance has been developed In order to drive both transmissive and reflective modes simultaneously without any modulation of gamma in a single-gap structure, we have introduced a new design concept in the reflective region, where the capacitance is separated into liquid crystal($C_{LC}$} and organic layer($C_{OL}$), playing a key role as a voltage divider in our cap-divided VA-mode. With this cap-divided method having both merits of simplifying process and good legibility, we have achieved good optical characteristics such as high contrast ratio and wide viewing angle in a single-gap homeotropic panel design.

  • In this study we consider the problem of production planning of TFT-LCD(Thin Film Transistor - Liquid Crystal Display) production factory. Due to the complexities of the TFT-LCD production processes, it is difficult to schedule the production planning, and the study about automated scheduler is insufficient. In addition, the existing production method is a Push-System to raise the operation rate with expensive equipment, that has the problem to satisfy the due-date. This study presents an algorithm having a concept of Pull-System that satisfies the due-date and considers specialties of TFT-LCD production process. We make MPS(Master Production Schedule) according to the sales order, and present algorithms for scheduling about In/Out plan considering factory capacity, line balancing, material requirement, and inventory level of all Array, Cell, and Module processes. These algorithms are integrated as an automated production system, and we implement them in the actual TFT-LCD factory circumstance.

  • This paper proposes a defect cell extraction algorithm for TFT-LCD auto-repair system. Auto defect search algorithm and automatic defect cell extraction method are very important for TFT-LCD auto repair system. In the previous literature[1], we proposed an automatic visual inspection algorithm of TFT-LCD. Based on the inspected information(defect size and defect axis, if defect exists) by the automatic search algorithm, defect cells should be extracted from the input image for the auto repair system. For automatic extraction of defect cells, we used a novel block matching algorithm and a simple filtering process in order to find a given reference point in the LCD cell. The proposed defect cell extraction algorithm can be used in all kinds of TFT-LCD devices by changing a stored template which includes a given reference point. Various experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Due to distinct properties of plastic substrates such as poor thermal resistance, non-rigidness and high thermal expansion, it is difficult to fabricate plastic film LCDs by conventional LCD processes. Poor thermal resistance and high thermal expansion of substrates induced deformation of substrates surface, mismatch of thermal expansion between ITO electrodes and substrates resulted in defects in the ITO electrodes during the high temperature process. Defects of ITO electrodes and non-uniform cell gap caused by non-rigid and flexible properties were also observed in the pressuring process. Based on in these observations, we used a newly developed material and fabrication process to prevent deformation of substrates, defects of electrodes and to maintain uniform cell gap. The maximum temperature of the process is limited up to $110^{\circ}C$ and pressure loaded during the process is five times less than conventional one. With these invented processes and materials, we obtained highly reliable Plastic Film STN LCDs whose electro-optical characteristics are better than or equivalent to those of typical glass LCDs.

  • This research developed process control device and FGV pattern generating device essential for full gate visual inspection to improve process so that defect detection capability may be maximized in specified environment. The devices developed in this research, which can be swiftly replaced in case loss or error occurs, are anticipated to improve module yield as well as maintain tact loss near '0'. In addition, as a result of mounting H/W and S/W system to control detailed operation sequence in production line and executing performance check and verification, detection rates were 98.1% and 99.1% respectively for pixel defect by tact and line defect, and yield of the entire module process including gate and visual level test increased up to 98.3%.

  • The increase of repetition rate, the dithering of laser optics, and the extension of pulse duration time are major approaches in improving the picture quality of AMOLEDs fabricated by excimer laser crystallization (ELC). Advanced solid phase crystallization (ASPC) has been developed to improve the uniformity and the process cost. Even though the mobility of ASPC-TFT is lower than that of ELC-TFT, it is high enough to drive AMOLED pixels.

  • TFT-LCD panel makers have been enlarging size of TV screens, and 50-inch TFT-LCD is one of the main stream products already. To have more improved resolution, productivity and lower manufacturing cost, new TFT-LCD factories adopt large mother glass, new TFT structure and new process/materials. Along with these technology evolution, laser repair system should equip with upgraded performance and additional functions on user's demand. Laser repair technology is reviewed and newly developed repair technology is being introduced.
