  • Researches were made on foot-warming, anti-bacteria and deodorant treatment. Feet, the very important organ to human body, perspire much and their temperature is lower than those of other parts. Hence, keeping feet warm, sanitary and deodorant is the area of this study. Latex sponge of activated carbon, impregnated open cell foam, treated with Vikol DZ-anti-bacteria finishing agent, was developed and tested for warmth-keeping by KSK 0560 test method and for sanitization by AATCC 90 HALO test method and for deodorization by wearing tests. The results show that the new developed latex spongee has warmth-keeping ratio of 2.5 times higher than that of the conventional spong and it has an excellent anti-bacteria effect. Actual wearing function tests also show that it improves significantly the performance of deodorization, sanitization, warmth-keeping and bulkiness.

  • The PBL (Poly-butadiene Latex) production process is a typical batch process. Changes of the reactor characteristics due to the accumulated scaling with the increase of batch cycles require adaptive tuning of the PID controller being used. In this work we propose a tuning method for PID controllers based on the closed-loop identification and the genetic algorithm (GA) and apply it to control the PBL process. An approximated process transfer function for the PBL reactor is obtained from the closed-loop data using a suitable closed-loop identification method. Tuning is performed by GA optimization in which the objective function is given by ITAE for the setpoint change. The proposed tuning method showed good control performance in actual operations.

  • The heterocoagulation of latex is a simple and useful method to fabricate various polymer nanocomposites in which a precise control of the colloid stability is essential. In this work, a multi-layered graphenes (MLGs)/poly(styrene-co-butyl acrylate) (P(S-co-BA)) nanocomposite having an excellent dispersion of MLGs was prepared via the sudden heating heterocoagulation process. The P(S-co-BA) component was obtained by emulsion polymerization. This process can effectively shorten the process and particles growth steps. The colloid stability of these dispersions was controlled by factors such as ionic charge, temperature, and reaction times. The influence of these factors on heterocoagulation was evaluated and the properties of the nanocomposites were investigated. The conductivity of the MLGs/P(S-co-BA) nanocomposites increased from -11.53 to -5.70 S/cm for an increase in MLG content from 0.01 to 5 wt%. Moreover, percolation threshold was observed in the case of 0.01 wt% MLGs.

  • The present study is an exploratory research concerned with evaluation of three types of high performance concrete for bridge deck applications. These include A-Type (silica fume 6%), B-Type (silica fume 6% plus fly ash 20%), C-Type (silica fume 6% plus blast-furnace slag 40%). Test results compare with Latex modified concrete (LMC) and Ordinary portland cement concrete (OPC). The results indicates that high performance concrete for bridge deck overlay shows the excellent mechanical and durability performance for LMC and OPC in case of static loading test. Analytical results are similar with experimental results. However there are relative errors of $1{\sim}4mm$ for deflection and maximum 12% for strain.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of polymer glass transition temperature on mechanical properties of polymer latex-modified mortars in comparison with ordinary cement mortar. The Polymer latex-modified mortars are prepared with 5, 10, 15 and 20% of polymer cement ratio respectively, and properties of modified mortars such as air content, compressive, flexural and tensile strengths are tested. The test results indicate that the types of polymer dispersion and the polymer-cement ratio are very important factors to characterize the properties of polymer-modified mortars, and also the glass transition temperature of polymer dispersions has an important effect on the performance of polymer-modified mortars. The modifying effects of two kinds of polymer dispersion, St/BA-1 and SBR, are evaluated.

  • Two-stage emulsion polymerizations of hydrophobic monomers on hydrophilic seed polymer particles were carried out to make core-shell composite particles. It was found that the loci of polymerization in the second stage were the surface layer of the hydrophilic seed latex particles, and that it has resulted in the formation of either eccentric core-shell particles with the core exposed to the aqueous phase or aggregated nonspherical composite particles with the shell attached on the seed surface as many small separated particles. The driving force of these phenomena is related to the gain in free energy of the system in going from the hydrophobic polymer-water interface to hydrophilic polymer-water interface. Thermodynamic analysis of the present polymerization system, which was based on spreading coefficients, supported the likely occurrence of such nonspherical particles due to the combined effects of interfacial free energies and phase separation between the two polymer phases. A hypothetical pathway was proposed to prepare hydrophilic core-hydrophobic shell composite latex particles, which is based on the concept of opposing driving and resistance forces for the phase migration. It was found that the viscosity of the monomer-swollen polymer phase played important role in the formation of particle morphology.

  • Expert system for automating HAZOP analysis of batch processes In contrast with continuous processes must consider the discrete variables such as time and sequence. So in this study, we have developed the expert system for automating HAZOP analysis of batch processes to analyse time and sequence on the basis of the relation between discrete variables and continuous ones. Because these variables can not be explained by the method used in the HAZOP analysis of continuous processes. The proposed expert system have been discussed on a Latex batch process to evaluate its effectiveness.

  • Kinetics of termonomer emulsion polymerization during interval II (i.e, after completion of latex particle formation) were studied through pseudo-homopolymerization (PHP) method. Extended Smith-Ewart equation and equation of instantaneous polymer composition are respectively reduced to the corresponding equation for homopolymerization by defining average rate constants. Average number of radicals per particle and instantaneous polymer compositions were respectively predicted by varying termonomer composition within latex particles for systems containing no more than one growing radical per particle. Styrene-Methyl methacrylate-Acrylonitrile (SMA) system was used for model calculation.

  • Film properties of monodispersed model composite latexes with particle size of 190 nm, which consist of n-butyl acrylate as a soft phase monomer and methyl methacrylate as a hard phase monomer with different morphology was examined. Five different types of model latexes were used in this study such as random copolymer particle, soft-core/hard-shell particle, hard-core/soft-shell particle, gradient type particle, and mixed type particle. Tensile strength and tensile elongation at break of final films were evaluated. Those properties can be interpreted in terms of PBA/PMMA phase ratio and their morphology. The interfacial adhesion strength was also evaluated using $180^{\circ}$ peel strength measurement and cross hatch cutting test.
