Evaluation of Color Coating Method for Color Maintenance of Color Asphalt Pavement (칼라 아스팔트 포장의 색채 표면보수를 위한 칼라코팅 공법 성능평가)

  • The evaluation of various color coating methods for color maintenance of color asphalt pavement is conducted using the laboratory and field tests on the bus lane. The surface of color asphalt constructed on the bus lane is deteriorated such as changing color and decoloration and abrasion due to the passing of the traffic and time. The total of 9 coating methods were evaluated in this study. The laboratory tests included Ultra violet test, adhesion test and Taber abrasion test and the field tests were british pendulum test and visual survey. The results of tests showed that the different methods showed the their own engineering characteristics and it is dependant upon the main material used. The rubber epoxy material for the main material showed the satisfactory result among the methods tested. However, the performance of the coating methods after 100days are not satisfactory, decoloration, abrasion and peeling up are investigated and need to be studied for the further application in the field.

Design of Drop Island to Accommodate the Turning Trajectory of Semi-Trailer (세미트레일러의 회전궤적을 고려한 물방울교통섬의 설치 방안 연구)

  • Triangle-shaped island was been used for the exclusive separation between the right-turn and the through flow. However, in case that existing Triangle-Shaped Island is built at the intersection of narrow road. there are more possibilities of traffic collision trespassing into the opposite lane. Accordingly, separation of the opposite lane is required so as to prevent the intrusion of the large-sized (a heavy) vehicle into the opposite lane turning at the intersection. This study showed the comparison between intersection composed of existing Triangle-Shaped Island and the intersection with Drop Island is added. First of all, in the safety aspect, a method to decide location and shape of Drop Island considering turning trajectory of the large-sized (the heavy vehicle) is addressed. The guideline on the placement of drop island install location and method to decide form the consider heavy truck's turn trajectory in safety side. As a conclusion. we analyzed that drop island is relatively superior to existing Triangle-Shaped Island in terms of driver, ease of driving, driving pleasantness, pedestrian, widening and economic performance aspect.

Prediction of Rear-end Crash Potential using Vehicle Trajectory Data (차량 주행궤적을 이용한 후미추돌 가능성 예측 모형)

  • Recent advancement in traffic surveillance systems has allowed the researchers to obtain more detailed vehicular movement such as individual vehicle trajectory data. Understanding the characteristics of interactions between leading and following vehicles in the traffic flow stream is a backbone for designing and evaluating more sophisticated traffic and vehicle control strategies. This study proposes a methodology for estimating rear-end crash potential, as a probabilistic measure, in real-time based on the analysis of vehicular movements. The methodology presented in this study consists of three components. The first predicts vehicle position and speed every second using a Kalman filtering technique. The second estimates the probability for the vehicle's trajectory to belong to either 'changing lane' or 'going straight'. A binary logistic regression (BLR) is used to model the lane-changing decision of the subject vehicle. The other component calculates crash probability by employing an exponential decay function that uses time-to-collision (TTC) between the subject vehicle and the front vehicle. The result of this study is expected to be adapted in developing traffic control and information systems, in particular, for crash prevention.

  • Electronic control systems of vehicle are rapidly developed to keep balance of a driver`s safety and the legal, social needs. The driver assistance systems are putted into practical use according to the cost drop in hardware and highly efficient sensor, etc. This study has developed a lane and vehicle detection program using CCD camera. The Risky Driving Analysis Program based on vision systems is developed by combining a risky driving detection algorithm formed in previous study with lane and vehicle detection program suggested in this study. Risky driving detection programs developed in this study with information coming from the vehicle moving data and lane data are useful in efficiently analyzing the cause and effect of risky driving behavior.

Methodology for Estimating Safety Benefits of Advanced Driver Assistant Systems (첨단 운전자지원시스템의 교통안전 효과추정 방법론)

  • Recent advanced sensors and communication technologies have been widely applied to advanced safety vehicle (ASV) for reducing traffic accident and injury severity. To apply the advanced safety vehicle technologies, it is important to quantify the safety benefits, which is a fundamental for justifying application. This study proposed a methodology for quantifying the effectiveness of the advanced driver assistant system (ADAS), and applied the methodology to lane departure warning system (LDWS) and automatic emergency braking system (AEBS) which are typical advanced driver assistant systems. When the proposed methodology is applied to 2008-2010 gyeonggi-province crash data, LDWS would reduce about 10~14% of relevant crashes such as head-on, run-off-the road, rollover and fixed-object collisions on the road. In addition, AEBS could potentially prevent about 50% of total rear-end crashes. The outcomes of this study support decision making for developing not only vehicular technology but also relevant safety policies.

Development of Lane-level Dynamic Location Referencing Method (차로 수준의 동적위치참조 방법 개발)

  • In this study a novel dynamic lane-level location referencing method(LLRM) was developed. The terminologies were defined and the prerequisites were suggested for the LLRM. Then, the logical and physical data formats were proposed, followed by the development of encoding and decoding algorithms. To conduct a performance test of the proposed method, two different high precision digital maps were prepared as well as an evaluation tool. The test results demonstrated that the proposed method works perfectly in terms of accuracy. The processing speed and the data size were found to be less efficient, but it is expected that the defect would be compensated soon enough due to the fast growing technology of ICT and computer hardwares.

Improving Two-way Road Functionality by Using Shoulder (길어깨를 활용한 2차로 도로 기능개선 방안 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is deriving proper plan which is improving functionality of three-way intersection in two-way road by using shoulder. Alternatives of this study were considered as installation of yield lane and application of TWLTLs (Two-Way Left-Turn Lanes). Case studies to utilize alternatives were limited to national and local roadways which is wider than 11 meters due to be required 3 lanes. Under various traffic conditions such as traffic volume of each direction and left-turn, alternatives were analyzed by simulation. As a results, application of TWLTLs was better than installation of yield lane in terms of improving rate (8.0% vs. 3.7%). Application of TWLTLs is supposed to better alternative, however enough driver education is required to improving safety because it is different with existing driving pattern and/or behaviors. Some limitations and future research agenda have also been discussed by on-site inspections.

Comparative Analysis on the Effectiveness of Modern Roundabouts and 4-legged Signalized Intersections (회전교차로와 4지 신호교차로 효과에 관한 비교분석)

  • The roundabout was developed in the United Kingdom to rectify problems associated with these traffic circles. In 1966, the United Kingdom adopted a mandatory "give-way" rule at alt circular intersections, which required entering traffic to give way, or yield, to circulating traffic. However, the roundabout used in United States or Europe do not common use in Korea. The purposes of the study is to comparatively analyze the effectiveness of roundabout. In pursuing the above, this study designs the scenarios which can reflect the directional traffic volumes, and analyzes the average control delay of roundabout and 4-leg signalized intersection by SIDRA. The main study results are as follows. First, when the entering traffic volume are less than 2,000pcph, the single-lane roundabout is analyzed to be more effective than 4-leg signalized intersection. Second, when the entering traffic volume are less than 3,200pcph, the double-lane roundabout is evaluated to be more effective than 4-leg signalized intersection. Third, which is installed left and right turn lane at intersection, area for the roundabout is analyzed to be less than that for general intersection area.

  • The vehicle electronic control system is being developed as the legal and social demand for ensuring driver's safety is rising. The various Driver Assistance Systems with various sensors such as radars, camera, and lasers are in practical use because of the falling price of hardware and the high performance of sensor and processer. In the preceding study of this research, the program was developed to recognize the experiment vehicle's driving lane and the cars nearby or approaching the experiment vehicle throughout the images taken by CCD camera. In addition, the 'dangerous driving analysis program' which is Vision System basis was developed to analyze the cause and consequence of dangerous driving. However, the Vision system developed in the previous studyhad poor recognition rate of lane and vehicles at the time of passing a tunnel, sunrise, or sunset. Therefore, through mounting the brightness response algorithm to the Vision System, the present study is aimed to analyze the causes of driver's dangerous driving clearly by improving the recognition rate of lane and vehicle, regardless of when and where it is.

Study on Design Principle of Reverse Curve in Superhighway (Superhighway 연속곡선의 설계 방침에 대한 연구)

  • PURPOSES : This study is to conduct the research on the design principle for the driver's safety and comfort in installing consecutive curves of superhighway. METHODS : Superhighway does not currently exist in domestic area. Thus, this study is conducted by collecting driving behavior usage of 30 people who are involved in the members of the virtual driving simulation. By identifying the distribution characteristics of each scenario in ANOVA & Tukey Test, the distribution are categorized into three groups. RESULTS : In the case of Group A in Section 3 (R2 entry part), lane departure exceeds the safety standard, which means to be risky condition. And then in the case of Group B and C, the lane departure values applying theoretical formula was evenly distributed compared to the proven values. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the result, the continuous curve design principles at superhighway should follow three standards as follow. First, an additional linear part needs to be inserted between two curves. Second, what if inserting the linear part is difficult, it would be better to insert a curve more than 2,000m. Third, R1/R2 ratio should not be over two. This design primarily aims to the safety of the operator. Such road alignment also meets the expectations of drivers, thus, it may help drivers to be compatible and amenable while driving continuous curve in superhighway.
