  • In this paper, we propose the architecture of an IPM based lane detector for autonomous vehicles to detect and control the driving route along the curved lane. In the IPM image, we divide the area into two fields, Far/Near Field, and the lane candidate region is detected using the Hough transform to perform the matching for the curved lane. In autonomous vehicles, various algorithms must be embedded in the system. To reduce the system resources, we proposed a method to minimize the number of memory accesses to the image and various parameters on the external memory. The proposed circuit has 96% lane recognition rate and occupies 16% LUT, 5.9% FF and 29% BRAM in Xilinx XC7Z020. It processes Full-HD image at a rate of 42 fps at a 100 MHz operating clock.

  • The primary objective of this study is to develop a reliable method for estimating the left turn capacity at the signalized intersection. This study is performed during periods of congestion. Multi left turn lane(bay lane and exclusive lane) approaches are examined. When more than one left turn lane exists, traffic volumes are not distributed equally over each lane. The fundamental approach taken in this study is measuring headways on left turn lanes with altering the bay length from 20m to 120m. Left turn lane is divided into 3 sub-sections in this study. These are SLP section(start-up lost time Period), SFP section(saturation flow period), LSP section(lane selection period). Saturation flow rates are evaluated for each sub section periods. As a results of analysis, it has been confirmed that the left turn capacity can be estimated by left turn bay length and effective green time for left turn. The left turn bay length adjustment factor is suggested in this study.

  • A lane detection system is one of the major components of intelligent vehicle systems. Difficulties in lane detection mainly come from not only various weather conditions but also a variety of special environment. This paper describes a simple and stable method for the broken lane tracking in various environments. Probabilistic Hough Transform (PHT) and the Least-square method (LSM) are used to track and correct the lane orientation. For the efficiency of the proposed method, two regions of interest (ROIs) are placed in the lower part of each image, where lane marking areas usually appear with less intervention in our system view. By testing in both a set of static images and video sequences, the experiments showed that the proposed approach yielded robust and reliable results.

  • The purpose of this study is to calculate and propose rational multi-lane loading factors for bridge design considering the probability of simultaneous truck passing in adjacent lanes and real truck weights. The probability of simultaneous truck passing is calculated by analyzing video image taken at various locations in highways and national roads. Weigh-In-Motion system data at two locations are used, which is combined with the probability of multiple presence to calculate the multi-lane loading factors for typical 2 lane and 5 lane bridges. Statistical properties of multi-lane loading factors are also calculated assuming that locations for video images and WIM data represent the overall traffic condition in the country. Results are compared with various design codes in the world and they show that the values are between the current Korea Bridge Design Code and AASHTO LRFD specification or Eurocode and are similar to Canadian Code.

  • The operational purpose of exclusive bus lanes is to ease traffic congestion through the increase of person-carrying capacity on arterial roads. It is necessary to study on the route suitability for exclusive bus lanes because their operation may worsen traffic congestion due to the misuse of general purpose lane for an exclusive bus lane. This research quantifies the route suitability for exclusive bus lanes in Kwangju-city utilizing 7 indexes such as bus traffic volume, number of bus routes, traffic volume per lane, number of lane, number of intersection, number of streets, rate of curvature for the exclusive bus lane, recognizing the problem that the current installation standard of exclusive bus lanes is only limited to the bus traffic volume and the number of bus passengers. In addition, this research analyzes the operational efficiency for exclusive bus lanes, which is currently operated and their optimal operation hours.

  • Expressway network which plays an important role on land transportation system, have been developing quantitatively and qualitatively with $7{\times}9$ structure. To cope with complex geometric condition, guidance lane marking has been installed to induce safer lane-changing maneuver. However, there is no standard on guidance lane marking and its effectiveness is also verified with limited scope. The major purpose of this research is to clarify its effectiveness in terms of driving safety aspect using virtual driving simulator and to suggest standard on the proper length. To carry this out, preference data from subjects was collected and lane-changing pattern within virtual driving environment was investigated. In addition, in order to quantify the level of comfort, Electroencephalogram data was collected and validated using statistical test. Finally, it is expected that this research can be used to establish standard on guidance lane marking.

  • 3D positional information of lane can be automatically calculated tv combining GPS data, IMU data if coordinates of lane centers are given. The Road Safety Survey and Analysis Vehicle(RoSSAV) is currently under development to analyze three dimensional safety and stability of roads. RoSSAV has GPS and IMU sensors to get positional information of the vehicle and two road-facing CCD cameras for extraction of lane coordinates. In this paper, we develop technology that automatically detects centers of lanes from the road-facing cameras of RoSSAV. The proposed algorithm defines line-support regions by grouping pixels with similar edge orientation and magnitude together and extracts a line from each line support region by planar fitting. Then if extracted lines and the region in-between satisfy the criteria of brightness and width, we decide this region as lane. The proposed algorithm was more precise and stable than the previously proposed algorithm based on brightness threshold method. Experiments with real road scenes confirmed that lane was effectively extracted by the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we suggest a system of detecting a vehicle with lane violation, which can detect the vehicle with lane violation, by using the feature point tracking. The whole algorithm in the suggested system of detecting a vehicle with lane violation is composed of three stages such as feature extraction, register and tracking in feature for the tracking-targeted vehicle, and detecting a vehicle with lane violation. In the stage of feature extraction, the feature is extracted from the inputted image by sing the feature-extraction algorithm available for the real-time processing. The extracted features are again selected the racking-targeted feature. The registered feature is tracked by using NCC(normalized cross correlation). Finally, whether or not lane violation is finally detected by using information on the tracked features. As a result of experimenting the suggested system by using the acquired image in the section with a ban on intervention, the excellent performance was shown with 99.09% for positive recognition ratio and 0.9% for error ratio. The fast processing speed could be obtained in 34.48 frames per second available for real-time processing.

  • This study estimated the changes in delays and speeds of vehicles in exclusive bus lane and road when the High Occupancy Vehicles(HOV) use the median bus lane. Synchro simulation tool was used to optimize the traffic signal time on the network and VISSIM was applied to simulate various scenarios. Here, drivers behavior parameters in VISSIM was optimized using Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation(SPSA) algorithm in order to represent real traffic condition. Based on the simulation results, the delay in Doan daero was decreased when the volume of HOV in current condition runs on the median bus lane, whereas delay in Doan dongro was increased in all scenarios. The changes in bus speed was not sharply decreased for both study sites, even though the number of HOV increased to 10%. Thus, it could be allowed that the HOV use the median bus lane in Doan dongro and Doan daero. Future research tasks include studying about changes in delay when the HOV use the curb bus lane.

  • This paper presents a novel algorithm to detect more accurate road lane with image sensor-based color classification and directional edge clustering. With treatment of road region and lane as a recognizable color object, the classification of color cues is processed by an iterative optimization of statistical parameters to each color object. These clustered color objects are taken into considerations as initial kernel information for color object detection and recognition. In order to improve the limitation of object classification using the color cues, the directional edge cures within the estimated region of interest in the lane boundary (ROI-LB) are clustered and combined. The results of color classification and directional edge clustering are optimally integrated to obtain the best detection of road lane. The characteristic of the proposed system is to obtain robust result to all real road environments because of using non-parametric approach based only on information of color and edge clustering without a particular mathematical road and lane model. The experimental results to the various real road environments and imaging conditions are presented to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
