감기바이러스(인플루엔자) 감염에 대한 마늘의 방어효과 (Effects of Garlic Extract for Protecting the Infection of Influenza Virus)

  • This study was designed to verify the efficacy of garlic extracts for protecting the infecton of influenza and Japanese B encephalitis virus. Influenza virus (AO/PR8 strain) and Japanese B encephalitis virus (JaGAr O1 strain) were used to attack mouse through nasal route and each vaccines were injected subcutaneously. 0.002 and 0.2 mL/day of garlic extracts were orally administered to mice. The blood and serum samples were taken from the mice to measure LD50, Defense Index (DI), virus-neutralizing antibody for comparing virus influence inhibiting activities. Defense indices of the male and female mice were not significantly different at every experiment. Vaccination effectively inhibited the influence of influenza virus and 0.002 mL/day garlic extract (0.55$\pm$0.05) resulted in significantly higher DI than the control (0$\pm$0.05) (p<0.05). Although 0.002 mL/day garlic extract (0.55$\pm$0.05) resulted in significantly lower DI than the vaccination (1.10$\pm$0.05), 0.2 mL/day garlic extract (2.05$\pm$0.05) resulted in 10 times higher DI than the vaccination (1.10$\pm$0.05). Garlic extract did not affect DI in Japanese B encephalitis virus influence of the vaccinated mouse, but significantly reduced DI of the non-vaccinated mouse (p<0.05). Garlic extracts did not affect the production of the neutralizing antibody against influenza by vaccination. However, neutralizing antibody production of Japanese B encephalitis was accelerated by vaccination. Consequently, the current study proved the efficacy of garlic on inhibition of influenza virus. Finally, it is very hard to show the higher preventing effect on flu through ingestion of garlic as a food than vaccination.

The Influences of Addition of Sugar with or without L. buchneri on Fermentation and Aerobic Stability of Whole Crop Maize Silage Ensiled under Anaerobic Silos

  • The whole plant of crop maize was chopped and ensiled in airtight 1-L capacity glass jars to determine the influence of residual sugar on anaerobic yeast growth and on the fermentation of lactic acid by L. buchneri in whole crop maize silage. There were a total of six treatments used in this experiment as follow: added 25 g de-mineralised water per kg chopped maize serving as control (con), 37.5 g glucose solution containing 12.5 g glucose ($g_1$), 75 g glucose solution containing 25 g glucose ($g_2$), 25 g L. buchneri suspension intended for $10^6$ cfu $g^{-1}$ (L.b.), $g_1+L.b.$ and $g_2+L.b.$ All silos were stored in the dark at $20^{\circ}C$ until end of experiment. Jars were opened on duplicates at day 2, 7, 14, 28, 56 or triplicates at day 91 after ensiling for measuring the pH, microbiological enumeration and fermentative products. Results indicated that acidification rates for all silages were very fast, no difference occurred among treatments before day 28. After day 28 the pH values for silages inoculated by L. buchneri. with or without sugar tended to increase especially for treated only with L. buchneri, resulting in higher (p<0.01) finial pH than uninoculated silages. Compared with control silage, the added sugar significantly (p<0.01) increased dry matter (DM) loss, L. buchneri enhanced (p<0.01) DM loss further at different sugar existence. Silages inoculated by L. buchneri only or in combination with sugar addition contained less (p<0.01) lactic acid than the correspondent silages without inoculation with L. buchneri. In comparison with control, ethanol production is about 3 or 6 fold higher due to addition 12.5 or 25 g glucose per kg chopped maize at ensiling. The added sugar resulted in less acetic acid concentration (p<0.01) than control, but inoculation with L. buchneri increased (p<0.01) acetic acid than correspondent uninoculated silages at different sugar levels. No butyric acid and propionic acid were found in uninoculted silages, silages inoculated with L. buchneri. produced more propionic acid, 1-propanol and butyric acid. Lactobacilli counts were not influenced by added sugar, but increased (p<0.01) with inoculation of L. buchneri. The added sugar increased significantly (p<0.01) the yeast count, whereas L. buchneri showed the contrary effect. No differences were found in the aerobic stability among all treatments. In conclusions, 1) the added sugars encourage the growth of yeast and yeasts convert extra sugar into ethanol in maize silages. 2) The added sugars and L. buchneri do not influence the aerobic stability of silages stored in anaerobic silos.

The Clinical Characteristics of Electrolyte Disturbance in Patients with Moderate and Severe Traumatic Brain Injury Who Underwent Craniotomy and Its Influence on Prognosis

  • Objective : The present study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of electrolyte imbalance in patients with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) who underwent craniotomy and its influence on prognosis. Methods : A total of 156 patients with moderate to severe TBI were prospectively collected from June 2019 to June 2021. All patients underwent craniotomy and intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring. We aimed to explore the clinical characteristics of electrolyte disturbance and to analyze the influence of electrolyte disturbance on prognosis. Results : A total of 156 patients with moderate and severe TBI were included. There were 57 cases of hypernatremia, accounting for 36.538%, with the average level of 155.788±7.686 mmol/L, which occurred 2.2±0.3 days after injury. There were 25 cases of hyponatremia, accounting for 16.026%, with the average level of 131.204±3.708 mmol/L, which occurred 10.2±3.3 days after injury. There were three cases of hyperkalemia, accounting for 1.923%, with the average level of 7.140±1.297 mmol/L, which occurred 5.3±0.2 days after injury. There were 75 cases of hypokalemia, accounting for 48.077%, with the average level of 3.071±0.302 mmol/L, which occurred 1.8±0.6 days after injury. There were 105 cases of hypocalcemia, accounting for 67.308%, with the average level of 1.846±0.104 mmol/L, which occurred 1.6±0.2 days after injury. There were 17 cases of hypermagnesemia, accounting for 10.897%, with the average level of 1.213±0.426 mmol/L, which occurred 1.8±0.5 days after injury. There were 99 cases of hypomagnesemia, accounting for 63.462%, with the average level of 0.652±0.061 mmol/L, which occurred 1.3±0.4 days after injury. Univariate regression analysis revealed that age, Glasgow coma scale (GCS) score at admission, pupil changes, ICP, hypernatremia, hypocalcemia, hypernatremia combined with hypocalcemia, epilepsy, cerebral infarction, severe hypoproteinemia were statistically abnormal (p<0.05), while gender, hyponatremia, potassium, magnesium, intracranial infection, pneumonia, allogeneic blood transfusion, hypertension, diabetes, abnormal liver function, and abnormal renal function were not statistically significant (p>0.05). After adjusting gender, age, GCS, pupil changes, ICP, epilepsy, cerebral infarction, severe hypoproteinemia, multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that hypernatremia or hypocalcemia was not statistically significant, while hypernatremia combined with hypocalcemia was statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion : The incidence of hypocalcemia was the highest, followed by hypomagnesemia, hypokalemia, hypernatremia, hyponatremia and hypermagnesemia. Hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia, and hypokalemia generally occurred in the early post-TBI period, hypernatremia occurred in the peak period of ICP, and hyponatremia mostly occurred in the late period after decreased ICP. Hypernatremia combined with hypocalcemia was associated with prognosis.

$Ca^{++}$ 처리가 한지형 잔디의 생육 및 무기성분 함량에 미치는 영향 (Influence of $Ca^{++}$ Treatment on Growth and Mineral Elements of Cool-Season Turfgrass Species)

  • Creeping bentgrass 'Penn-Al', Perennial ryegrass 'Palmer ll', Kentucky bluegrass 'Nassou', Tall fescue 'Boonsai 2000'의 생육에 대한 칼슘의 영향을 온실에서 조사하였다. Creeping bentgrass 'Penn-Al', Kentucky bluegrass 'Nassou'와 Tall fescue'Boonsai 2000'의 shoot 생육은 Ca 4.0me/L에서, Perennial ryegrass 'Palmer II'는 Ca 2.0me/L.에서 가장 양호하였다. Creeping bentgrass 'Penn-Al', Perennial ryegrass 'Palmer II'와 Kentucky bluegrass 'Nassou'의 뿌리생육은 Ca 1.0me/L, Tall fescue'Boonsai 2000'는 Ca 4.0me/L에서 가장 양호하였지만 처리간에 큰 차이는 없었다. Creeping bentgrass 'Penn-Al'와 Kentucky bluegrass 'Nassou'의 분얼수는 Ca 4.0me/L., Perennial ryegrass 'Palmer II'는 Ca 1.0me/L에서 가장 많았으며, Tall fescue 'Boonsai 2000'의 분얼수는 Ca 4.0me/L에서 가장 많았지만 처리간 유의성은 없었다. 식물체 내 무기성분 함량은 Ca 처리 농도가 높을수록 Ca 함량이 많았고, 반대로 Mg 함량은 감소하였으며, Fe는 Ca 4.0me/L까지는 함량이 증가하였고, N, P, K, Zn는 큰 영향이 없었다. 식물 영양실험에 있어서 심지화분의 이용성은 정확도와 간편성이 탁월하여 앞으로의 연구에 많이 적용될 수 있음을 확인하였다.

  • An experimental study of twin-fluid atomization for powder metallurgy has been conducted using a specially designed atomizer in which liquid is first spread into a thin sheet and then exposed on both sides to high-velocity air. Inner air jet worked for supplying liquid and outer air jets disintegrated liquid sheet. The first result of this study were confined to the effect of atomizing quality through experiments with water. The experimental data will be extend to include the influence of atomizing air velocities on mean particle size through experiments with molten material. An experimental equation on the relationship between SMD and the related parameters was taken out; $$SMD=0.00302\frac{{(\sigma_L\;\rho_L\;D_L)}^{0.5}}{\rho_A(V_1+1.155\;V_2)/2}(1+\frac{W_L}{(W_{A1}/3.33)+W_{A2}})+0.0148(\frac{{\mu_L}^2}{\sigma_L\;\rho_L})^{0.425} \;{D_L}^{0.575}(1+\frac{W_L}{(W_{A1}/3.33)+W_{A2}})^2$$.

블루베리의 미세번식에서 배지와 식물생장조절제의 영향 (Influence of Medium and Plant Growth Regulator on Micropropagation Efficiency in Blueberry)

  • 본 연구는 조직배양을 이용한 효율적인 블루베리의 묘생산 체계 개발을 위하여 수행되었다. 신초형성을 위한 초대배양을 위해서는 WPM 배지가 MS 배지보다 신초형성률, 마디수, 신초장 등에 있어서 유의적으로 우수하였다. 식물생장 조절제가 신초형성에 미치는 식물생장조절제의 영향을 조사하기 위해서는 zeatin(1, $2mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), 2iP(10, $15mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), 그리고 BA(4, $6mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$)를 처리하였으며, 신초의 증식에 미치는 영향을 확인하기 위해서는 zeatin($0.5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), 2iP(10, $15mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), 그리고 BA($0.05mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$)를 처리하였다. 신초형성에 미치는 결과는 zeatin 처리가 신초형성률, 마디수, 신초장 등에서 유의적으로 효과적이었다. 반면 무처리와 BA 처리에서는 신초가 형성되지 않았으며, 2iP 처리의 경우 신초형성률이 낮았다. 기내 삽목으로 생산된 블루베리 신초의 계대배양에 있어 신초 발생 및 생장에 미치는 영향은 zeatin을 농도별로 처리한 결과, 모든 농도에서 신초의 형성률과 형성된 신초의 개수는 유의적 차이를 보이지 않은 반면 zeatin의 농도가 증가할수록 신초의 마디수는 증가하나 신초장은 짧아지는 경향을 보였다. 신초증식을 위한 적정한 zeatin 농도는 $0.5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 였다.

  • This study is to analyze the influence of correction factor and specimen thickness on the fundamental properties of porous concrete. Results of this study were shown as follows; 1) As correction factor decrease, compaction time according to correction factor and specimen thickness decrease. Also, though correction factor is same, as specimen thickness increase, compaction time increase. So It mutt be considered that the influence of compaction time according to correction factor and specimen thickness. 2) As correction factor decrease, difference of measured thickness and designed thickness according to correction factor and specimen thickness decrease. Also, correction factor of aggregate of 10~l5mm is smaller than that of 5~l0mm. So It must be considered that the influence of correction factor according to size of aggregate.

Influence of Systemic Fungicide on the Hematology of Silkworm Bombyx mori L. Infected with Beauveria bassiana

  • Systemic fungicides viz., Bavistin and Beyleton are reported to have curative effect against the infection of Beauveria bassiana in silkworm Bombyx mori L. To understand the influence of the systemic fungicides on the disease suppression/development, hematological studies were carried out. There was an increase in the percent total hemocyte count, granulocyte and plasmatocyte in silkworm treated with the systemic fungicides. It possibly indicates the influence of systemic fungicide on the hemocyte mediated defense system leading to the higher resistance and suppression of disease development.

Exploring stress encoding cues in English by Korean L2 speakers

  • The present study investigated the perceptual cues utilized by Korean L2 learners of English in recognizing lexical stress in English nonwords, with a focus on the roles of fundamental frequency (F0) and duration. Twenty-three Korean learners of English participated in a sequence recall task involving nonword stimuli under five different conditions: (1) the naturally-produced stimuli, (2) the duration-only condition, (3) the F0-only condition, (4) the duration-F0 matching condition, and (5) the duration-F0 conflicting condition. The results demonstrate that F0 is the primary cue for stress perception among Korean L2 learners, whereas duration acts as a secondary cue, particularly when F0 is unreliable or absent. These findings highlight the influence of L1 prosodic structures on L2 perception and suggest that Korean L2 learners adapt their perceptual weighting of stress based on cue availability. This study contributes to the understanding of the role of cue weighting in L2 prosodic acquisition.

The influence of cuttlebone on the target strength of live golden cuttlefish (Sepia esculenta) at 70 and 120 kHz

  • To quantitatively estimate the influence of cuttlebone on the target strength (TS) of golden cuttlefish, the cuttlebone was carefully extracted from 19 live cuttlefish caught using traps in the inshore waters around Geojedo, Korea, in early May 2010 and the TS was measured using split-beam echosounders (Simrad ES60 and EY500). The TS-length relationships for the cuttlefish (before the extraction of cuttlebone, Fish Aquat Sci. 17:361-7, 2014) and the corresponding cuttlebone were compared. The cuttlebone length ($L_b$) ranged from 151 to 195 mm (mean $L_b$ = 168.3 mm) and the mass ($W_b$) ranged from 29.3 to 53.2 g (mean $W_b$ = 38.8 g). The mean TS values at 70 and 120 kHz were -33.60 dB (std = 1.12 dB) and -32.24 dB (std = 1.87 dB), respectively. The mean TS values of cuttlebone were 0.19 dB and 0.04 dB lower than those of cuttlefish at 70 and 120 kHz, respectively. For 70 and 120 kHz combined, the mean TS value of cuttlebone was -32.87 dB, 0.11 dB lower than that of cuttlefish (-32.76 dB). On the other hand, the mean TS value of cuttlebone predicted by the regression ($TS_b$ = 24.86 $log_{10}$ $L_b$ - 4.86 $log_{10}$ ${\lambda}$ - 22.58, $r^2$ = 0.85, N = 38, P < 0.01) was -33.10 dB, 0.04 dB lower than that of cuttlefish predicted by the regression ($TS_c$ = 24.62 $log_{10}$ $L_c$ - 4.62 $log_{10}$ ${\lambda}$ - 22.64, $r^2$ = 0.85, N = 38, P < 0.01). That is, the contribution of cuttlebone to the cuttlefish TS determined by the measured results was slightly greater than that by the predicted results. These results suggest that cuttlebone is responsible for the TS of cuttlefish, and the contribution is estimated to be at least 99 % of the total echo strength.
