This study was conducted to get basic information of dry matter production and agronomic characteristics for increasing grain ripening in rice cultivar with large grains. Three cultivars which have different grain size were used. Of the two large grain cultivars, SR7796-3-1-5-1-l(SR7796F$_{7}$) had long culm and SR11269-13-3-4-2(SR11269F$_{6}$) had short culm. On the other hand, Tamjinbyeo was recommended cultivar had medium size of grain and culm. LAI was highest in Tamjinbyeo, followed by the SR11269F$_{6}$ and SR7796F$_{7}$, LAI decrement was higher in large grain cultivars than that of Tamjinbyeo after 20days after heading. Total dry weight(TDW) of areal part was highest in SR11269F$_{6}$, followed by the Tamjinbyeo and SR7796F$_{7}$. Dry weight (DW) of stem (leaf sheath+culm) at harvesting stage was decreased 15%, 12% in Tamjinbyeo, SR11269F$_{6}$, respectively, but was increased 5% in SR7796F$_{7}$ compared to heading stage. In distribution rate of each organ to TDW, distribution rate of leaf blade was low in large grain cultivar, but that of stem in Tamjinbyeo, SR7796F$_{7}$ and SR11269F$_{6}$ was 36%, 38% and 42%, respectively. In canopy architecture leaf blade weight was the highest 30~40cm, 40~50cm and 70~8Ocm above the ground in SR11269F$_{6}$, Tamjinbyeo and SR7796F$_{7}$, respectively. Range of panicle distribution in the canopy was 40cm in Tamjinbyeo, and was 70cm in large-grain cultivars. The results suggest that it has to take a growing interest in developing culture method for increasing LAI during growth stage, especially, around heading, in keeping green leaf till ripening stage and also in growing unformly plant within rice hill in large grain cultivars.cultivars.ltivars.

Rice flours from five rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties with different amylose content were prepared by both wet and dry milling processes. The moisture content of wet-milled rice flours (WMR) was approximately three-times higher than that of dry-milled rice flours (DMR). Water absorption index (WAI), water solubility index (WSI), and swelling power (SP) increased in proportion to temperature. The WAI, WSI and SP values of DMR were higher than those of WMR. Baeokchal (BOC), which is a waxy rice cultivar, had a significantly high WSI value. Pasting properties of DMR, except for the BOC cultivar, resulted in an increase in peak, trough, final, and setback viscosities. The levels of resistant starch in four cultivars, except for Dodamssal (DDS), were under 1%, irrespective of the milling process, whereas the resistant starch contents of DMR and WMR in DDS were 9.18% and 6.27%, respectively. In vitro digestibility of WMR was higher than that of DMR, and the estimated glycemic index of the rice flour varieties ranged from 57.6 to 81.3. Damaged starch content of WMR was less than that of DMR; in addition, a negative correlation was observed between the amylose and damaged starch contents of WMR. These results suggest that the properties of rice flour vary depending on the milling method and flour variety, and could be a reference for selecting the appropriate processing method.
BACKGROUND: Constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment are vegetated by wetland plants. Wetland plants are an important component of wetlands, and the plants have several roles in relation to the livestock wastewater treatment processes. The objectives of this study were to investigate the growth characteristics and nutrient absorption of water plants in constructed wetlands for treating livestock wastewater. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, livestock wastewater treatment plant by constructed wetlands consisted of $1^{st}$ water plant filtration bed, $2^{nd}$ activated sludge bed, $3^{rd}$ vertical flow(VF), $4^{th}$ horizontal flow(HF) and $5^{th}$ HF beds. Phragmites communis TRINIUS(PHRCO) was transplanted in $3^{rd}$ VF bed, Iris pseudoacorus L(IRIPS) was transplanted in $4^{th}$ HF bed and PHRCO, IRIPS and Typha orientalis PRESEL(THYOR) were transplanted in $5^{th}$ HF. Growth of water plants in constructed wetlands were the highest in October. The IRIPS growth was higher than other plant as 264 g/plant in October. The absorption of nitrogen and phosphorus by IRIS were 3.38 g/plant and 0.634 g/plant, respectively. The absorption of K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn by water plants were higher in the order of IRIPS > THYOR > PHRCO. CONCLUSION(S): The absorption of nutrients by water plants were higher on the order of IRIPS > THYOR > PHRCO in constructed wetlands for treating livestock wastewater.

A field experiment was carried out to determine the effects of chemical /mechanical treatments at mowing on the field drying rate and hay quality of rye (Secale cereale L.). The chemical drying agent/mower conditioner ($K_2CO_3$ 2%, conditioning, $K_2CO_3$ 2% + conditioning and control) were treated at different harvest stage (late boot, heading and bloom stage) for hastening hay-making in the spring of 1996. After field dry, square bales were made by hay baler, and the dry matter(DM) loss, visual estimation and nutritive value of rye hay were evaluated after storing two months. The field drying rate of rye was higher with delayed stage of harvest, and mechanical and chemical + mechanical treatment, but the effectiveness of chemical alone was very low. With mower conditioning, the duration of field dry was shortened by 1.5 to 2 days compared with control. The DM loss of rye hay was reduced by late harvest and mechanical, and chemical + mechanical combined treatment, but the efficiency by chemical alone was very low. The visual score (Ieafiness, green color, odor and softness) of hay after storing was high in mechanical and chemical + mechanical, but the score by chemical alone was very low. The nutritive value (ADF, NDF, digestibility, and relative feed value) of hay was also high with treatment of mechanical and chemical + mechanical, but the quality by chemical alone was similar compared with control. The quality of hay was very low when harvested at bloom stage. In conclusion, mower conditioning can enhance the field drying rate of rye, but the drying effectiveness of chemical drying agent was very low. The effect of chemical/mechanical combined treatment was very similar when compared with mechanical alone. Harvest at early heading to heading stage was recommended for high quality rye hay.

Tomato were stored at different temperatures($10^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, room temperature and $30^{\circ}C$) for 5 days. During the storage period, Brix, pH, color, texture, vitamin C, lycopene were analyzed. Brix and pH had a little change. Texture force of tomato decreased with storage time and we could see a softening for tomato stored at $30^{\circ}C$ for 1 day. Addtional, the $L^*$(lightness) and $b^*$(yellowness) decreased and $a^*$(redness) increased with storage time. Addtionally, content of vitamin C increased up to 9.08 mg/100 g~17.82 mg/100 g after 5 days storage according storage temperature, whereas content of lycopene increased up to 3.81 mg/kg~34.56 mg/kg after 5 days storage according storage temperature. Optimal mature temperature for tomato was room temperature.
The growth inhibition effect of $Doenjang$ that was prepared with various kinds of solar salt was investigated. $Doenjang$ was prepared using the bacterial koji and five kind of salt with 12% salt concentration (w/w): purified salt $Doenjang$, one-year aged solar salt $Doenjang$, four-year aged solar salt $Doenjang$, topan solar salt $Doenjang$, and boiled solar salt $Doenjang$. The $Doenjangs$ were fermented and aged for 18 months. The growth inhibition effects of the water extracts and the methanol extracts of the $Doenjangs$ were measured on AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma cells, HT-29 colon carcinoma cells, and BJ human foreskin normal cells using MTT assay. The water and methanol extracts of the $Doenjang$ samples showed growth inhibition effects on the cancer cells, in the following order of the samples with the strongest to the weakest effect: the four-year aged solar salt $Doenjang$, the topan solar salt $Doenjang$, the boiled solar salt $Doenjang$, the one-year aged solar salt $Doenjang$, and the purified salt $Doenjang$. The methanol extracts of the four-year aged solar salt Doenjang (AGS: 55% and HT-29: 48%) showed the strongest growth inhibition effect. In addition, decreased cancer cell numbers and morphological changes in the cancer cells (AGS and HT-29) were observed when the methanol extract of the four-year aged solar salt $Doenjang$ was treated. None of the $Doenjang$ extracts showed a growth inhibition effect on the BJ normal cells, though.
The organic acids, fuel oil contents and antioxidant activities of Yakju with the addition of rice varieties were investigated. The rice cultivars that were used in this study were Ilmi rice, Hopyung rice, Hopum rice, Hanarum rice, Anda rice and Indica rice. The study results are as follows: the pH values of Ilmi Yakju and Hanarum Yakju were 4.14 and 4.07, respectively, and those of the other Yakjus, 3.92~3.98. The total titratable acid content of the Yakju for which Indica rice was imported from Thailand was highest among the samples. The reducing sugars content of the Yakju for which Indica rice was used was higher than that of the other samples. The ethanol content of the Hanarum Yakju was higher than that of the other Yakjus, and the lowest ethanol content was found for the Indica Yakju. The major organic acid component of the Yakju was lactic acid. The total organic acid content was highest in the Indica rice Yakju. The amounts of the following main fusel oils were highest, in the following order: 2-butyl alcohol, 2-pentanol, N-propyl alcohol, acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate, methyl alcohol and 2-methyl-1-propyl alcohol. The DPPH free radical scavenging activity of the Indica rice Yakju was much higher than that of the Ilmi rice Yakju and the Hanarum rice Yakju. Also, the SOD activity of the Indica rice Yakju was strongest among all the samples. The total polyphenol content of the Indica rice Yakju was the highest among all the samples.
This studies were conducted to get the basic information on the growth habits of Scirpus planiculmis F. Schmidt for control in poldered paddy field. The distribution of corm was about 16% in 0-5cm, 66% in 5-8 cm. 18% in 8-10cm depth of underground. The mean depth of total corm distribution was about 6.51cm. Number of rhizomes and dormant buds per corm were one to four, respectively. Number of rhizomes. dormant buds and total buds(rhizome+dormant bud) were 2.34, 2.85 and 5.20, respectively. The phyllotaxy of S. planiculmis was 1/3 and bracteal leaf were showed from first to 4th leaves. The period of propagation to 100 plants from emergence was 58.52 and 48 days for corm seeded on March 25th, b4ay 7th and June 6th respectively. Days to emergence of S. planiculmis from emergence of previous plant was gradually shorted. as order of propagation from corm seeded progressed. The other side, length of rhizome, plant height and diameter of culm was increased. The plant height of S. planiculmis was higher than rice plant from early stage in rice direct seeding culture, and from 30 dats after transplanting in rice transplanting culture. Speed of propagation was faster in rice direct seeding culture than in rice trasplanting culture.

The study was conducted to establish the safe cropping season for direct- seeding on flooded paddy by the analysis of meteorological data(l973~1992, 20 years) from Korea Meteorological Administration. The critical date for early seeding(CDES) at direct- seeding culture on flooded paddy was decided by the appearance date of daily mean air temperature(DMAT) of 15$^{\circ}C$. The optimum heading date(OHD) was the first day when 22$^{\circ}C$ of daily mean air temperature could be kept for 40 days of ripening period after heading, and the critical date of late heading for safe ripening(CDHR) was the last day when 19$^{\circ}C$ of daily mean air temperature could be kept for 40 days after heading. The optimum seeding date(OSD) and the critical date for late seeding(CDLS) could be decided by the accumulated temperature from OHD and CDHR to the appearance dates of necessary temperatures for early, intermediate, and intermediately late maturing varieties. This results can be used for the determination of the safe cropping season of direct-seeding on flooded paddy in each agroclimatic zone. For instance, the OSD appearance date for early maturing variety in Suwon region appeared to be May 11~20 and the CDLS appearance date was May 31~June 7.

Lipid characteristics of 6 species of fish frame (armored weasel-fish, AW; chum salmon, CS; spanish mackerel, SM; common mackerel, CM; conger eel, CE and skipjack tuna, ST) were studied by determining total lipid (TL) contents, lipid classes, and fatty acid composition. The highest yield of bone was obtained from ST frame (64.2%), followed by CS frame (57.9%), CE frame (54.6%), A W frame (41.6%), SM frame (41.7%), and CM frame (32.6%). The highest neutral lipid content was also found in total lipid (TL) from SM bone (23.3 g/100 g), followed by TL from CE bone (21.5 g/100 g), CS bone (16.0 g/100 g), and CM bone (15.5 g/100 g), while those from ST and A W bones were 7.2 g/100 g and 0.4 g/100 g, respectively. The prominent lipid classes of neutral lipids (NL) from all fish bones and muscles were triglyceride (TG), however, which was much lower in AW than in other fishes. The percentages of EPA and DHA in NL from fish bone were in the descending order of CS (29.3%), ST (27.1%), AW (27.0%), CM (25.7%), SM (21.6%), and CE (14.9%). Based on the lipid characteristics, the CS frame was the best resource for extraction of a functional lipid.
