  • Some experiment were conducted to evaluate the joint toxic action of carbofuran(2,3-Dihydro-2, 2-dimethyl-benzofuranyl methyl carbamate) and diazinon (0.0-Diethyl-0-(2-isopropyl-6-methyl-e-pyrimidinyl)-0-thionophosphate) against 3rd-instar larvae of the common cutworm, Agrotis fucosa (Butler). Acetone solutions of carbofuran or diazinon or mixture of these two insecticides, were topically applied to the mesonotum of the insect in a constant volume of $1.0{\mu}l$ per larva by means of Burkard microapplicator. Joint toxic action of carbofuran and diazinon for 3rd-instar larva of common cutworm was synergistic. The maximum synergistic effect might be obtained when the ratio of carbofuran to diazinon was 4.8 : 5.2.

  • This paper presented equations on the stress evaluation of steel frame pier connections that were composed of a box beam and a circular column. The existing equations, which transformed the circular column into an equivalent box column had some problems; they underestimated a shear lag stress as the joint angle decreased, and overestimated a shear stress as the joint angel increased. Therefore, FE analyses were performed with various parameters, such as joint angle(${\alpha}$), span length-width ratio(L/B), and circular column-to-box beam stiffness ratio(${\alpha}$), and new equations on stress evaluation were proposed based on FE analyses. Furthermore, material and geometric nonlinear analyses were performed to estimate ultimate strength and to confirm the validity of the proposed equations.

  • Biomechanical analysis of arm motion during steering was performed using a motion analysis technique. Three-dimensional position data for each part of arm are fed into an interactive model combining a musculoskeletal arm model and the mechanical steering system to calculate joint angles and torques using inverse kinematic and dynamic analyses, respectively. The analysis shows that elbow pronation/supination, wrist flexion/extension, shoulder adduction/abduction, and shoulder flexion/extension have significant magnitudes. Sensitivity analysis of the arm joint motion with respect to seating posture and steering wheel configuration is carried out to investigate the qualitative influence of the seating posture and driver's seat configuration on the steering behavior.

  • Recently, many researches regarding the natural products which alternate with chemical products have been done. Among them, boswellia is well known for effect on anti-oxidative effect and inflammation. The aim was the effect boswellia of formalin- induced orofacial and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain on experimental animals was investigated. Experiments were carried out using subcutaneous (SC) pain model and TMJ pain model that were induced by the injection of 5% formalin into the right vibrissa pad (SC, $50{\mu}L$) or TMJ ($30{\mu}L$) of rats, respectively. In both models, formalin (5%), formalin after distilled water (vehicle), formalin after boswellia extract (p.o., concentrations of 15, 30 mg/kg) (n=6). The number of scratching on the injected region was scored during the 9 successive periods of 5 min intervals following injection of formalin. Oral administration of boswellia (15, 30 mg / kg) reduced formalin-induced SC orofacial pain behavioral responses. SC orofacial pain behavioral responses was significantly reduced at 20~35 min. In the experimental group injected into temporomandibular joints, the pain response was significantly reduced by $276.2{\pm}8.20$ and $78.3{\pm}4.7$ after oral administration of boswellia (15, 30 mg / kg) at $398.3{\pm}24.8$ times. As a result of the passage of time, the oral administration of boswellia showed a significant effect of reducing the temporomandibular joint pain 30 minutes after the injection of formalin. This study confirmed that oral administration of boswellia modulated the pain behavior in both models. In conclusion, boswellia extract may be a potential therapeutic treatment for orofacial pain.

  • Objectives : Degenerative arthritis arises from several physiological factors. The purpose of this study is to investigate the beneficial effects of Phyto-extract Complex (CME) on degenerative arthritis. Methods : CME is composed of extracts of mulberry (Morus alba L.) fruit, mulberry leaves and black beans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). To measure the toxicity of CME, we performed the single-dose toxicity study. For the evaluation of its effects on degenerative arthritis, we examined the inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) activity, using in vitro enzyme activity assay, the reduction of protein expression of COX-2, 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in RAW264.7 cells which were stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). We also examined the serum level of prostaglandins (PGs) and injury of the knee joint cartilage, using animal model of degenerative arthritis induced by mono-sodium iodoacetate (MIA). Results : CME did not have any toxicity in single-dose toxicity study. The CME inhibited the activity of COX-2 and could reduce the protein expression of COX-2, 5-LO and iNOS in RAW264.7 cells. The CME also reduced the serum level of PGs and prevented from the cartilage injury of knee joint in animal model of degenerative arthritis induced by MIA. Conclusions : Taken altogether, the CME could be useful for the improvement of degenerative arthritis through its various anti-inflammatory activities and prevention from the cartilage injury of knee joint.

  • Rapidly destructive arthrosis is a rare syndrome characterized by narrowing of the joint space and rapid joint destruction within 6~12 months. A 62-year-old woman with anaplastic lymphoma kinase rearranged non-small-cell lung cancer presented with both knee pain and varus deformity. She was treated with crizotinib 500 mg/day for more than 2 years, with partial tumor response. Initial plain radiography showed Kellgren and Lawrence (K-L) grade 1. After 10 months, varus deformity was worsened and plain radiography aggravated to K-L grade 4 despite conservative treatment including activity modification. Diffuse synovitis with massive joint effusion and destruction of anterior cruciate ligament, medial meniscus, medial collateral ligament, and lateral collateral ligament were shown in magnetic resonance imaging. The patient was diagnosed with rapidly destructive arthrosis of knee and underwent a both total knee arthroplasty.

  • Multidirectional instability of the shoulder joint is an unusual entity which is not yet well understood. Traditionally recommended treatment is non-operative, but recently arthroscopic treatment has been performed. This is a retrospective review of 20 patients who had multidirectional instability, who had been treated with arthroscopic capsular shift(7 cases), and arthroscopic treatment using Ho:YAG laser(l3 cases) at Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Chungnam National University Hospital from July, 1988to February, 1997. Results of this study were as follows: 1. In five patients who were treated with arthroscopic anterior capsular shift only, all cases had redislocation of the shoulder joint. But there was no redislocation in two patients who were treated with arthroscopic anterior and posterior capsular shift. 2. ln three patients who were treated with laser-assisted capsular shift only, all cases had redislocation of the shoulder joint. But there was only one redislocation in ten patients treated with laser-assisted capsular shrinkage and capsular plication. Ho: Y AG laser has been found to be a safe and efficacious adjunct to many arthroscopic shoulder procedures. We had satisfactory results by combining a transglenoid capsular shift with laser-assisted capsular shrinkage. Arthroscopic laser-assisted capsular shrinkage and capsular plication is a one of recommendable treatment options in multidirectional instability of the shoulder joint.

  • The beneficial effects of hypoxic preconditioning are abolished in the diabetes. The present study was designed to investigate the protective effects and mechanisms of repeated episodes of whole body hypoxic preconditioning (WBHP) in db/db mice. The protective effects of preconditioning were explored on diabetes-induced vascular dysfunction, cognitive impairment and ischemia-reperfusion (IR)-induced increase in myocardial injury. Sixteen-week old db/db (diabetic) and C57BL/6 (non-diabetic) mice were employed. There was a significant impairment in cognitive function (Morris Water Maze test), endothelial function (acetylcholine-induced relaxation in aortic rings) and a significant increase in IR-induced heart injury (Langendorff apparatus) in db/db mice. WBHP stimulus was given by exposing mice to four alternate cycles of low (8%) and normal air O2 for 10 min each. A single episode of WBHP failed to produce protection; however, two and three episodes of WBHP significantly produced beneficial effects on the heart, brain and blood vessels. There was a significant increase in the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nitric oxide (NO) in response to 3 episodes of WBHP. Moreover, pretreatment with the BDNF receptor, TrkB antagonist (ANA-12) and NO synthase inhibitor (L-NAME) attenuated the protective effects imparted by three episodes of WBHP. These pharmacological agents abolished WBHP-induced restoration of p-GSK-3β/GSK-3β ratio and Nrf2 levels in IR-subjected hearts. It is concluded that repeated episodes of WHBP attenuate cognitive impairment, vascular dysfunction and enhancement in IR-induced myocardial injury in diabetic mice be due to increase in NO and BDNF levels that may eventually activate GSK-3β and Nrf2 signaling pathway to confer protection.
