  • The addition of steel fibers in concrete mixture is recognized as a non-conventional mass reinforcement scheme that improves the torsional, flexural, and shear behavior of structural members. However, the analysis of fiber reinforced concrete beams under combined torsion, bending, and shear is limited because of the complicated nature of the problem. Therefore, nonlinear 3D finite element analysis was conducted using the "ANSYS CivilFEM" program to investigate the behavior of fiber reinforced concrete L-beams. These beams were tested at different reinforcement schemes and loading conditions. The reinforcement case parameters were set as follows: reinforced with longitudinal reinforcement only and reinforced with steel bars and stirrups. All beams were tested under two different combined loading conditions, namely, torsion-to-shear ratio (T/V) = 545 mm (high eccentricity) and T/V = 145 mm (low eccentricity). Eight intermediate L-beams were constructed and tested in a laboratory under combined torsion, bending, and shear to validate the finite element model. Comparisons with the experimental data reveal that the program can accurately predict the behavior of L-beams under different reinforcement cases and combined loading ratios. The ANSYS model accurately predicted the loads and deformations for various types of reinforcements in L-beams and captured the concrete strains of these beams.

  • This paper aims to investigate the natural frequency of a cracked cantilever L-beams with a coupled bending and torsional vibrations. In addition, a theoretical method for detection of the crack position and size in a cantilever L-beams is presented based on natural frequencies. Based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the equation of motion is derived by using extended Hamilton's Principle. The dynamic transfer matrix method is used for calculation of a exact natural frequencies of L-beams. In order to detect the crack of L-beams, the effect of spring coefficients for bending moment and torsional force is included. In this study, the differences between the actual data and predicted positions and sizes of crack are less than 0.5% and 6.7% respectively.

  • An experimental investigation is conducted to examine the behavior and cracking of steel fiberre-inforced concrete spandrel L-shaped beams subjected to combined torsion, bending, and shear. The experimental program includes 12 medium-sized L-shaped spandrel beams organized into two groups, namely, specimens with longitudinal reinforcing bars, and specimens with bars and stirrups. All cases are examined with 0%, 1%, and 1.5% steel fiber volume fractions and tested under two different loading eccentricities. Test results indicate that the torque to shear ratio has a significant effect on the crack pattern developed in the beams. The strain on concrete surface follows the crack width value, and the addition of steel fibers reduces the strain. Fibrous concrete beams exhibited improved overall torsional performance compared with the corresponding non-fibrous control beams, particularly the beams tested under high eccentricity.

  • An experimental study of five full-scale coupling beam specimens has been conducted to investigate the seismic behavior of strengthened RC coupling beams by bolted side steel plates using a reversed cyclic loading procedure. The strengthened coupling beams are fabricated with different plate thicknesses and shear connector arrangements to study their respective effects on load-carrying capacity, strength retention, stiffness degradation, deformation capacity, and energy dissipation ability. The study revealed that putting shear connectors along the span of coupling beams produces no significant improvement to the structural performance of the strengthened beams. Translational and rotational partial interactions of the shear connectors that would weaken the load-carrying capacity of the steel plates were observed and measured. The hierarchy of failure of concrete, steel plates, and shear connectors was identified. Furthermore, detailed effects of plate buckling and various arrangements of shear connectors on the post-peak behavior of the strengthened beams are discussed.

  • This paper aims to investigate the vibration analysis of functionally graded porous (FGP) beams using State-space approach with several classical and non-classical boundary conditions. The materials properties of the porous FG beams are considered to have even and uneven distributions profiles along the thickness direction. The equation of motion for FGP beams with various boundary conditions is obtained through Hamilton's principle. State-space approach is used to obtain the governing equation of porous FG beam. The comparison of the results of this study with those in the literature validates the present analysis. The effects of span-to-depth ratio (L/h), of distribution shape of porosity and others parameters on the dynamic behavior of the beams are described. The results show that the boundary conditions, the geometry of the beams and the distribution shape of porosity affect the fundamental frequencies of the beams.

  • In this paper, the natural frequency of a cracked cantilever L-beams with a coupled bending and torsional vibrations is investigate by theory and experiment. In addition, a method for detection of crack in a cantilever L-beams is presented based on natural frequency measurements. The governing differential equations of a cracked L-beam are derived via Hamilton's principle. The two coupled governing differential equations are reduced to one sixth order ordinary differential equation in terms of the flexural displacement. Futher, the dynamic transfer matrix method is used for calculation of a exact natural frequencies of L-beams. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during vibrations. In this study, the differences between the actual and predicted positions and sizes of crack are less than about 10 % and 39.5 % respectively.

  • The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate the influence of shear span-to-depth ratio on the minimum shear reinforcement ratio of reinforced concrete beams. In this study, 7 reinforced concrete beam specimens were tested. The parameters of experiment are shear span-to-depth ratio(a/d=2.0, 3.0, 4.0) and shear reinforcement ratio($p_v$=0%, 0.183%, and 0.233%). The section of all secimens was 350mm width and 450mm depth. The observed results were compared with the calculated results by the current ACI 318-02 Building Code and the proposed equation. The safety rate of the specimens, L5S2A, L5S3A, L5S4A, and L5S4P specimens were 1.80, 1.25, 1.38, and 1.56 respectively. The test results indicated that the shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams with the minimum shear reinforcement was influenced by the shear span-to-depth ratio.

  • Six full-scale prestressed concrete (PC) I-beams with steel fibers were tested to failure in this work. Beams were cast without any traditional transverse steel reinforcement. The main objective of the study was to determine the effects of two variables-the shear-span-to-depth ratio and steel fiber dosage, on the web-shear and flexural-shear modes of beam failure. The beams were subjected to concentrated vertical loads up to their maximum shear or moment capacity using four hydraulic actuators in load and displacement control mode. During the load tests, vertical deflections and displacements at several critical points on the web in the end zone of the beams were measured. From the load tests, it was observed that the shear capacities of the beams increased significantly due to the addition of steel fibers in concrete. Complete replacement of traditional shear reinforcement with steel fibers also increased the ductility and energy dissipation capacity of the PC I-beams.

  • In this study, free vibration analyses of symmetric laminated cantilever and simply supported damaged composite beams are investigated by using finite element method (FEM). Free vibration responses of damaged beams are examined using Euler Bernoulli beam and classical lamination theories. A computer code is developed by using MATLAB software to determine the natural frequencies of a damaged beam. The local damage zone is assumed to be on the surface lamina of the beam by broken fibers after impact. The damaged zone is modeled as a unidirectional discontinuous lamina with $0^{\circ}$ orientations in this study. Fiber volume fraction ($v_f$), fiber aspect ratio ($L_f/d_f$), damage length ($L_D$) and its location (${\lambda}/L$), fiber orientation and stacking sequence parameters effects on natural frequencies are investigated. These parameters are affected the natural frequency values significantly.
