  • A disease forecast model for Marssonina blotch of apple was developed based on field observations on airborne spore catches, weather conditions, and disease incidence in 2013 and 2015. The model consisted of the airborne spore model (ASM) and the daily infection rate model (IRM). It was found that more than 80% of airborne spore catches for the experiment period was made during the spore liberation period (SLP), which is the period of days of a rain event plus the following 2 days. Of 13 rain-related weather variables, number of rainy days with rainfall ≥ 0.5 mm per day (Lday), maximum hourly rainfall (Pmax) and average daily maximum wind speed (Wavg) during a rain event were most appropriate in describing variations in airborne spore catches during SLP (Si) in 2013. The ASM, Ŝi = 30.280+5.860×Lday×Pmax-2.123×Lday×Pmax×Wavg was statistically significant and capable of predicting the amount of airborne spore catches during SLP in 2015. Assuming that airborne conidia liberated during SLP cause leaf infections resulting in symptom appearance after 21 days of incubation period, there was highly significant correlation between the estimated amount of airborne spore catches (Ŝi) and the daily infection rate (Ri). The IRM, ${\hat{R}}_i$ = 0.039+0.041×Ŝi, was statistically significant but was not able to predict the daily infection rate in 2015. No weather variables showed statistical significance in explaining variations of the daily infection rate in 2013.

  • lactic acid production from cellulose by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation(SSF) was studied. The SSF using cellulase enzyme Cytolase CL and Lactobacillus delbrueckii was strongly inhibited by the end product(lactic acid). An ion-exchange resin(RA-400) was used for in-situ product removal during SSF. The sorption capacity of the resin was 200mg/g-resin. The simple SSF and the extractive SSF resulted in lactic acid concentrations of 30.4g/L and 32.0g/L, respectively, at the initial substrate concentration of 50g/L. A model was developed to simulate the extractive SSF. The lactic acid conversion for the initial substrate of 100g/L was estimated to be improved from 60% to 09% by in-situ product removal. The experimentally determined kinectic parameters were pH dependent, and fitted as empirical expressions to establish their values at different pH's. Lactic acid productivity was predicted to be maximum at pH 4.5-5.0.

  • Purpose: Various methods have been proposed to achieve the nearly complete decontamination of the surface of implants affected by peri-implantitis. We investigated the in vitro debridement efficiency of multiple decontamination methods (Gracey curettes [GC], glycine air-polishing [G-Air], erythritol air-polishing [E-Air] and titanium brushes [TiB]) using a novel spectrophotometric ink-model in 3 different bone defect settings (30°, 60°, and 90°). Methods: Forty-five dental implants were stained with indelible ink and mounted in resin models, which simulated standardised peri-implantitis defects with different bone defect angulations (30°, 60°, and 90°). After each run of instrumentation, the implants were removed from the resin model, and the ink was dissolved in ethanol (97%). A spectrophotometric analysis was performed to detect colour remnants in order to measure the cumulative uncleaned surface area of the implants. Scanning electron microscopy images were taken to assess micromorphological surface changes. Results: Generally, the 60° bone defects were the easiest to debride, and the 30° defects were the most difficult (ink absorption peak: 0.26±0.04 for 60° defects; 0.32±0.06 for 30° defects; 0.27±0.04 for 90° defects). The most effective debridement method was TiB, independently of the bone defect type (TiB vs. GC: P<0.0001; TiB vs. G-Air: P=0.0017; TiB vs. GE-Air: P=0.0007). GE-Air appeared to be the least efficient method for biofilm debridement. Conclusions: T-brushes seem to be a promising decontamination method compared to the other techniques, whereas G-Air was less aggressive on the implant surface. The use of a spectrophotometric model was shown to be a novel but promising assessment method for in vitro ink studies.

  • Water retention curve (WRC), one of soil hydraulic properties, is often approximated by property-transfer models (PTMs). Using the PTMs, we can estimate the WRCs from other physical properties such as particle-size distribution (PSD). The objective of this work was to investigate the performance of two PTMs with different origins for numerical simulations on transport of Benzo[a]pyrene in a soil. To do this, we chose both PTMs with different origins, i.e., (1) the lognormal distribution model (L anti NL models), and (2) the modified $Kov\'{a}cs$ model (MK model). The MK model showed tile worse performance in estimation of the WRCs. When transport of B[a]P was simulated, the MK model predicted to move farther than the L and NL models did, indicating that transport of B[a]P in a soil can be greatly influenced by the choice of PTMs.

  • In order to find the most fitted biodegradation model, biodegradation models to the initial 4-chlorophenol concentrations were investigated and had been fitted by the linear regression. The degrading bacterium, EL-091S, was selected among phenol-degraders. The strain was identified with Pseudomows sp. from the result of taxonomical studies. The optimal condition for the biodegradation was as fellows: secondary carbon source, concentration of ammonium nitrate, temperature and pH were 200mg/l fructose, 600 mg/l, $30^{\circ}C$ and 7.0 respectively. The highest degradation rate of the 4-chlorophenol was about 58% for 24 hours incubation on the optimal condition. Biodegradation kinetics model of 5 mg/l 4-Chlorophenol, 10 mg/l 4-chlorophenol and 50 mg/l 4-chlorophenol were fitted the zero order kinetics model, respectively. Key Words : 4-chlorophenol, Pseudomonas sp., zero order kinetics model.

  • Objective : To develop a simple, reproducible model of disc degeneration in rabbits through percutaneous annular puncture and to confirm the degree of degeneration over time. Methods : Fifteen New Zealand white rabbits (4 to 5 months old and weighing approximately 3 to 3.5 kg each) underwent annular puncture of the L2-L3, L3-L4, and L4-L5 discs. Rabbits were sacrificed at 4, 8, or 20 weeks after puncture. For a longitudinal study to assess changes in disc height over time, serial X-rays were performed at 0, 2, 4, 8, and 20 weeks for rabbits in the 20-week group. Upon sacrifice, the whole spinal column and discs were extracted and analyzed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), real time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, and histological staining. Results : The X-rays showed a slow, progressive decrease in disc height over time. Significant disc space narrowing compared to preoperative disc height was observed during the time period (p<0.001). The MRI grade, aggrecan, and matrix metalloprotease-13 mRNA expression and hematoxylin and eosin/safranin O/anti-collagen II staining were consistently indicative of degeneration, supporting the results of the X-ray data. Conclusion : Percutaneous annular puncture resulted in slow, reproducible disc degeneration that was confirmed by radiology, biochemistry, and histology. This in vivo model can be used to study and evaluate the safety and efficacy of biologic treatments for degenerative disc disease.

  • Background: Little is known about how chemical water quality is associated with ecological stream health in relation to landuse patterns in a watershed. We evaluated spatial characteristics of water quality characteristics and the ecological health of Dongjin-River basin, Korea in relation to regional landuse pattern. The ecological health was assessed by the multi-metric model of Index of Biological Integrity (IBI), and the water chemistry data were compared with values obtained from the health model. Results: Nutrient and organic matter pollution in Dongjin-River basin, Korea was influenced by land use pattern and the major point sources, so nutrients of TN and TP increased abruptly in Site 4 (Jeongeup Stream), which is directly influenced by wastewater treatment plants along with values of electric conductivity (EC), bacterial number, and sestonic chlorophyll-a. Similar results are shown in the downstream (S7) of Dongjin River. The degradation of chemical water quality in the downstream resulted in greater impairment of the ecological health, and these were also closely associated with the landuse pattern. Forest region had low nutrients (N, P), organic matter, and ionic content (as the EC), whereas urban and agricultural regions had opposite in the parameters. Linear regression analysis of the landuse (arable land; $A_L$) on chemicals indicated that values of $A_L$ had positive linear relations with TP ($R^2=0.643$, p < 0.01), TN ($R^2=0.502$, p < 0.05), BOD ($R^2=0.739$, p < 0.01), and suspended solids (SS; ($R^2=0.866$, p < 0.01), and a negative relation with TDN:TDP ratios ($R^2=0.719$, p < 0.01). Conclusions: Chemical factors were closely associated with land use pattern in the watershed, and these factors influenced the ecological health, based on the multimetric fish IBI model. Overall, the impairments of water chemistry and the ecological health in Dongjin-River basin were mainly attributes to point-sources and land-use patterns.

  • In allelic model X = ($x_1,\;x_2,...x_{d}$), $M_f(t)$= f(p(t)) - ${{\int}^{t}}_0$Lf(p(t))ds is a P-martingale for diffusion operator L under the certain conditions. In this note, we can show uniqueness of martingale problem associated with mean vector and obtain a complete description of ergodic property by using of the semigroup method.
