A Study on the Activity and its Influence of Pioneer Missionary in Korea Protestant Mission Architecture -(1) Focused on the Architectural Activities of Graham Lee- (한국미션건축에 있어서 개신교 개척선교사의 활동과 영향에 관한 연구 -(1) 그래함 리(Graham Lee)의 건축활동을 중심으로-)

  • Since Korea disclaimed to open the ports, Korean architecture has met the impetuous transformation. Although there would be various factors of this transformation, the new-coming architecture by missionary seemed to be a significant one, and many researches have been carried out on this theme in diverse viewpoints. However, because these researches have preponderated on the Catholic tradition, it is deficient for clarify the whole history of mission architecture. Therefore, this research has the meaning to enrich the history of Korean modern architecture by making balance. First of all, this paper is focused on the activities of one missionary, Graham Lee. He is a practical missionary at the beginning, his architecture made a critical influence in Korean traditional architecture. Graham Lee was born in Rock Island, Illinois, 1861, and he determined to become a missionary through grown up. He spent his boyhood by working as a plumber for his purpose and studied in a university afterward. Graduating of McComick Theological Seminary, he was nominated as a pioneer of Pyeng Yang Mission Station and set foot in Korea, September of 1892. Since then he started to erect missionary facilities in Pyeng Yang, such as Well House(1898), Pyeng Yang Central Church(1900-1901), Pyeng Yang Academy(1902). These all his works are designed with eclectic style which shows western and Korean traditional style intermingled. This unique characteristic made a profound influence to the Korean mission architecture afterwards. Especially, the L-type plan of Pyeng Yang Central Church, which is first shown by him, is recognized very unique, and this plan type had been spread all over the country. Therefore the L-type plan became the peculiar feature of the early Korean churches. Furthermore, working with Korean carpenters, he taught them new skills of modem buildings. After that, they were expanded out northern part of Korea and took the roles of master builders. According to this expansion, his particular style had got spread and had been settled as a unique eclectic style in Korean modern architecture. In the conclusion, he is evaluated to be a critical pioneer missionary, who left a big influence on the frame work of Korean modern architecture in the transitional times.

A Brief Study on Stanojevic's Works on the $\mathfrak{L}^1$-Convergence (Stanojevic의 푸리에 급수의 $\mathfrak{L}^1$-수렴성 연구의 소 계보 고찰)

  • This study concerns Stanojevic's academic works on the $\mathfrak{L}^1$-convergence of Fourier series from 1973 to 2002. We review his academic works. Also, we briefly investigate a simple academic lineage for the researchers of $\mathfrak{L}^1$-convergence of Fourier series until 2012. First, we introduce the classical lineage of the researchers for $\mathfrak{L}^1$-convergence Fourier series in section 2. Second, we investigate the backgrounds of Stanojevic's study at Belgrade University and University of Missouri-Rolla respectively. Finally, we compare and consider the $\mathfrak{L}^1$-convergence theorems of Stanojevic's results from 1973 to 2002 successively. In addition, we compose a the simple lineage of $\mathfrak{L}^1$-convergence of Fourier series from 1973 to 2012.

A Study on the Method of Turning Circle Drawing by Z-test (Z시험에 의한 선회권의 작도법에 관한 연구)

  • A navigator on bridge needs to know every kinds of motion characteristics of his vessel at sea. Generally when a vessel is completely built, the shipyard makes turning circle diagrams from the results of turing circle tests made during the sea trials for the reference of the vessel's owner. But referring only the data of a turning circle diagram, an officer on bridge can not figure out his vessel's maneuvering characteristics sufficiently, So nowadays the shipyard often adds Z test to turning circle test for more detail references. In this paper the author made Z and turning circle tests at the rudder angles of 15 and and 35 degress separately and in each of the case made a turrning circle diagram from the results of the turning circle test and the esults numerically calculated from mathematical formula made on the base of the maneuvering indices got from the Z test and compared them each other for the purpose of finding the correlations between them. Followings are concluded from the results. An actual turning circle diagram and a calculated one from the results of the Z test at same rudder angle coincides each other well when the center of the calculated circle is transferred by 1.7B toward the direction of the initial turning perpendicularly to the original course and 0.5L toward the direction in parallel with original course in case of the rudder angle of 35 degrees and 1.2B and 0.3L toward each of the above mentioned directions in case of rudder angle of 15 degrees.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the complementary idea of the psychological elements in aesthetic expression of architectural space in the sense of healing. Marks $L\ddot{u}scher$, the swiss psychologist suggested reasonable categories of emotional character according to the couple combinations among Content, Self-Esteem, Confidence, and Liberty. His theory on healing is not only the concept but the practical method to understand and control the conflict between contrary elements of emotion. Compared to the Freud's objective theory of cause and consequence, his idea is focused on the subjective and autonomous harmony. This theory based on complementary idea is applied to psychological attitude of architects on Spatial Expression in this study. Refuge, Prospect, Flow and Void are assumed as equivalent spatial elements to the four major emotional conditions suggested by $M.L\ddot{u}scher$. The couple combinations among them also characterize the architectural characters definitely and it is expected to be the reasonable criteria in analysing aesthetic value and motive of creating human space.

  • The purpose of this study is create a comparative analysis of the characteristics of various materials which were used on the outer wall of F.L.Wright's works. The research results will be summarized as follows: 1) Wright thought that the outer wall was not just a physical object which divides the space of a house but it includes the image of the total exterior form, as well as, the economical factors of the age. 2) He tried to sublimate architectural image of his own style with the change of time because he recognized difficulties and limitations of traditional materials and economic feasibility. 3) He used nature-friendly material like wood and brick which were used in various methods of his natural architectural concept. 4) Some of Wright's early works were acculturated by classical architectural components such as the column to emphasize verticality of architectural form. The columns play a division role in the face of the outer wall creating a dynamic image and this also controls the amount of light that enters inside the house.

  • Between 1890-1914, the fundamental changes of the housing in United Sates of America were provoked to attempt the housing developments to adapt modern social system. The worthy of notice is that F L. Wright's Prairie House had been tested and built during the period as 'the first and second era' Despite the transition period in America, this represents that Wright's Prairie House series were developed. There are possibilities that some of the reformers assertion for Housing Development, on behalf of Arts & Crafts Movement, led to Wright's early house inner space design. For this reason, this study is to examine Ideologies that Wright has been accepted between the turning point of America's Arts & Crafts Movement and Hull House Circle. In terms of the ideologies acceptance, the study is also to examine how to be represented his inner space design characteristics. As the result, between'Simplification'housing development and the traditional housing In America, F L. Wright sublimated his own architectural aesthetic as accepting all functional elements to consider inevitability in this period, such as the association between economical and rational space, the plan to led on free plane, the spatial side and the stability of family life and the community, through the unification space having the consecutiveness.

  • One of the reasons why Louis I. Kahn is regarded as a pioneer of Post-Modern Architecture is that his works are interpreted as Structuralism and Post-structuralism in architecture. A. $L{\ddot{u}}chinger^{\prime}s$ interpretation of Structuralism and M. Benedikt's interpretation of Post-structuralism; especially Deconstruction Theory, in Kahn's architecture must be proper cases for understanding this context. However, when we precisely analyze their insistence, several fallacies can be found with their incomplete grasp of Kahn's architectural thinking. The most problematic thing is that they maximize fallibility with focusing only on the analysis of superficial phenomenon, such as formal composition, disposition of space, decorative features, and so on. Therefore, the meaning of architectural essence toward Post-Modern Architecture which Kahn had pursued during his lifetime is sometimes misinterpreted. For this reason, this paper attempt to reanalyze Kahn's philosophy of architecture deeply with the view of aesthetics which has a key role in both overcoming their fallacies and illuminating the potentiality of Kahn's architecture.

  • This study was carried out to understand the activity of pepsin, the proteolytic enzyme, to octapeptide (angiotensin II) in the presence of various synthetic antioxidants as food additives. 1) Dibutyl hydroxy toluene, butyl hydroxyanisole and ethyl protocathechuate did not influence the inhibitory activity of pepsin an the octapeptide as a substrate, but sodium-L-ascorbate inhibited pepsin activity at above 100ppm. However sodium L-ascorbate was completely removed after 30 minutes. 2) Pepsin brought about a quick break up the octapeptide, Asp-Arg-Val-Tyr-Ile-His-Gly-Phe, by splitting the Gly-Phe and Val-Tyr bond. 3) The melting point of synthetized octapeptide was $209-212^{\circ}C$, chemical formula and molecula weight were $C_{43}H_{65}N_{13}O_{12}{\cdot}CH_3COOH{\cdot}H_2O$ and 956.05, respectively. 4) The amino acid mole ratio of synthetized octapeptide by acid hydrolysis were Asp:0.98, Arg: 1.02, Val: 1.00. Tyr: 0.95, Ile: 1.00, His: 1.03, Gly: 0.96, Phe: 1.00.

T. S. Eliot's Modernized Myth (엘리엇의 현대화된 신화)

  • This paper attempts to illuminate the significance of the myth or mythical method used in The Waste Land, which Eliot adapted from Jessie L. Weston's From Rituals to Romance and Sir James Frazer's Golden Bough. While he was composing a modern epic, James Joyce's Ulysses and Igor Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps made him sure that the mythical method would be the best way to make the non-relational and chaotic modern world into a work of art. Although he accepted F. H. Bradley's epistemology that one's actual experience is non-relational, he strongly put an emphasis on 'the unified sensibility' in John Donne's poetry with which a poet changes all the dissociated material into art. He also found another effective method to give the chaotic experiences an order, and to make them modern art: the mythical method in his contemporary anthropology. With the mythical method he incorporated the various barren, horrible and ugly aspects of modern world into a new unity in The Waste Land. In addition, he embraced his contemporary anthropological theory that a primitive life described in myths is a culture just different from modern culture, and heartily employed some aspects of primitive culture to make modern poetry as well as modern culture rich and exuberant.

Primary hepatic sarcoidosis presenting with cholestatic liver disease and mimicking primary biliary cholangitis: a case report

  • Sarcoidosis often involves the liver. However, primary hepatic sarcoidosis confined to the liver without evidence of systemic involvement is rare. We report the case of a 37-year-old man with hepatic sarcoidosis who initially presented with elevated liver enzymes and suspicious cirrhotic nodules on computed tomography. The patient had cirrhosis but did not have portal hypertension. Based on the initial histopathologic finding of chronic granulomatous inflammation and the common clinical characteristics of sarcoidosis, he was initially diagnosed with primary biliary cholangitis, and his daily dosage of ursodeoxycholic acid was increased to 900 mg. After 14 months of treatment, his total serum bilirubin concentration was 10.9 mg/dL (upper normal limit, 1.2 mg/dL). Additionally, a transjugular liver biopsy revealed multiple noncaseating granulomas. He was diagnosed with primary hepatic sarcoidosis involving the lungs, heart, spleen, kidneys, and skin. Treatment with methylprednisolone was initiated. Two weeks later, he was started on azathioprine, and the dose of steroid was simultaneously reduced. These findings indicate the importance of including hepatic sarcoidosis as a possible diagnosis in patients with elevated liver enzymes or cryptogenic cirrhosis.
