Study on Desorption Reaction of VOC Produced from Manufacturing of Chemical Products (화학제품 제조업에서 발생한 VOC의 탈착반응 연구)

  • The characteristics of desorption reaction for spent activated carbon produced from the manufacture of other chemical products in Shiwha/Banwal industrial complex were investigated. TGA (Thermogravimetric Analyzer) was used to study for characteristics of desorption and kinetics. Then Friedman method and Freeman-carroll method were used to find the activation energy and the order of reaction. Activation energy by Friedman method was 24.82~46.49 kJ/moL. And then activation energy and order of reaction by Freeman-carroll method were 8.77~32.26 kJ/moL and 0.11~1.69.

Determination of Polybrominated Biphenyls in Biota Samples Using Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (기체크로마토그래피/질량분석법을 이용한 생체시료 중 Polybrominated Biphenyls의 분석법)

  • The present study describes an analytical method for the determination of polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) in biota samples by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). PBBs are extracted twice from 20 g samples with mixture solvent 40mL acetone and 80mL hexane using ultrasonic agitation for 20 min. Lipids in extracts are degraded by concentrated sulfuric acid and then PBBs are purified with Florisil column. The purified extracts are analyzed by GC/MS-selected ion monitoring mode for the quantitation of PBBs in biota sample. The overall recovery yields of PBBs range between 77 and 111% under these experimental conditions.

Anti-obesity Effect of Yogurt Fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum Q180 in Diet-induced Obese Rats

  • This study aimed to investigate the anti-obesity effects of yogurt fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum Q180 in diet-induced obese rats. To examine the effects, male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed on six different diets, as follows: Group A was fed an ND and orally administrated saline solution; Group B, an HFD and orally administrated saline solution; Group C, an HFD and orally administrated yogurt fermented by ABT-3 and L. plantarum Q180; Group D, an HFD and orally administrated yogurt with added Garcinia cambogia extract, fermented by ABT-3 and L. plantarum Q180; Group E, an HFD and orally administrated yogurt fermented by L. plantarum Q180; and Group F, an HFD and orally administrated yogurt with added Garcinia cambogia extract, fermented by L. plantarum Q180 for eight weeks. After eight weeks, the rate of increase in bodyweight was 5.14%, 6.5%, 3.35% and 10.81% lower in groups C, D, E and F, respectively, compared with group B; the epididymal fat weight of groups E and F was significantly lower than that of group B; and the level of triglyceride and leptin was significantly reduced in groups C, D, E and F compared to group B. In addition, the level of AST was reduced in group C compared to the other groups. To examine the effects of yogurt on the reduction of adipocyte size, the adipocyte sizes were measured. The number of large-size adipose tissue was less distributed in groups A, C, D, E and F than in group B.

Comparative Biological Properties of Prunus davidiana Fruits according to Harvest Month (산복사나무 열매의 수확시기별 생리활성물질 함량 비교)

  • This study was performed to determine the optimal month of harvest between May and July for wild peach (Prunus davidiana) by comparison of functional materials. The general composition, amino acid and vitamin (A, C, and E) content, and antioxidant activity were determined. With respect to the general composition of wild peach according to the month of harvest, wild peach harvested in May (HMP) and July (HJP) contained mostly carbohydrate, the contents of which amounted to 77.37 g/100 g and 77.92 g/100 g, respectively. The total amino acid content of HMP and HJP were 675.29 mg% and 573.25 mg%, respectively. Regarding the vitamin contents, vitamin A (retinol), E (${\alpha}-tocopherol$) and C in HMP were higher than those in HJP. The total polyphenol content of HMP (218.37 mg TAE/g) was higher than that of HJP (71.45 mg TAE/g). The total flavonoid content of HMP (64.95 mg RE/g) was also higher than that of HJP (32.67 mg RE/g). Moreover, the DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities ($IC_{50}$) were higher in HMP ($137.18{\mu}g/mL$ and $157.15{\mu}g/mL$) than those in HJP ($160.10 {\mu}g/mL$ and $186.01 {\mu}g/mL$), meaning that the former produces better antioxidant effects. It can be concluded that wild peach harvested in May contained higher functional materials such as vitamins and amino acids and had a higher antioxidant effect, than wild peach harvested in july.

Inhibitory Effects of Eucommia ulmoides Extract on Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (두충차 추출물의 Angiotensin Converting Enzyme 저해효과)

  • To assess a potential possibility of Eucommia ulmoides (EU) as a functional food, anti-hypertensive materials of EU were isolated by silica gel column, thin layer and reverse phase column chromatographies, and then ACE (angiotensin-converting emzyme) inhibitory activities of different parts (leaf, bark, and stem) were investigated. The isolated compound, 8A, was pinoresinol-4,4'-di-O-${\beta}$-D-glucoside (below PDG) originating from Eucommial Cortex and its purity was 95.64%. Of all the samples tested, PDG in raw bark and roasted bark was the highest level at 135.13 mg% and 163.67 mg%, respectively. In ACE inhibitory activity at 10 mg/mL of EU extracts, roasted leaf, raw bark, and roasted bark were 77.56%, 75.73%, and 75.73%, respectively. ACE activities at 1 mg/mL were shown to be 91.87% for PDG, 97.06% for $Enalapril^{(R)}$, and 90.32% for $Captopril^{(R)}$.

  • Recombinant Corynebacterium glutamicum producing N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) was constructed by metabolic engineering. To construct a basal strain producing GlcNAc, the genes nagA, nagB, and nanE encoding N-acetylglucosamine-6-phosphate deacetylase, glucosamine-6-phosphate deaminase, and N-acetylmannosamine-6-phosphate epimerase, respectively, were sequentially deleted from C. glutamicum ATCC 13032, yielding strain KG208. In addition, the genes glmS and gna1 encoding glucosamine-6-phosphate synthase and glucosamine-6-phosphate N-acetyltransferase, which originated from C. glutamicum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, respectively, were expressed in several expression vectors. Among several combinations of glmS and gna1 expression, recombinant cells expressing glmS and gna1 under control of the ilvC promoter produced 1.77 g/l of GlcNAc and 0.63 g/l of glucosamine in flask cultures.

Enhancing GPU Performance by Efficient Hardware-Based and Hybrid L1 Data Cache Bypassing

  • Recent GPUs have adopted cache memory to benefit general-purpose GPU (GPGPU) programs. However, unlike CPU programs, GPGPU programs typically have considerably less temporal/spatial locality. Moreover, the L1 data cache is used by many threads that access a data size typically considerably larger than the L1 cache, making it critical to bypass L1 data cache intelligently to enhance GPU cache performance. In this paper, we examine GPU cache access behavior and propose a simple hardware-based GPU cache bypassing method that can be applied to GPU applications without recompiling programs. Moreover, we introduce a hybrid method that integrates static profiling information and hardware-based bypassing to further enhance performance. Our experimental results reveal that hardware-based cache bypassing can boost performance for most benchmarks, and the hybrid method can achieve performance comparable to state-of-the-art compiler-based bypassing with considerably less profiling cost.

  • Radiochemical synthesis of $N^{G}$-mono[$^{14}$ C-methyl]-L-arginine is described. The compound was synthesized from radio-active mono[$^{14}$ C]-methylamine as easily and purified by strong cation-exchange resin (NH form) liquid chromatography using a gradient of ammonium hydroxide, and crystallized as flavianate. The free amino acid was successfully prepared by strirring its flavianate and strong anion-exchange resin (OH- form), which could remove the flavianic acid from its salt in water below room temperature. Purity of the compound was tested by thin-layer chromatography, thin-layer electro-phoresis, and scintillation spectrometry.y.

Properties of Microbial Surfactant S-acid (미생물 계면활성제(S-acid)의 특성조사에 관한 연구)

  • Characteristics of S-acid and its derivatives, as biosurfactants, were investigated. Sodium salt of S-acid(S-lNa) effectively decreased the surface tension to near 30 dyne/cm and showed superior dispersing ability than commercial surfactants such as SDS and Tween 80. The emulsion made by S-lNa could be maintained even with increased concentration of calcium ion. Also the penetratlng ability of S-lNa was observed as effective as that of LAS. All derivatives of S-acid were degraded by microorganisms much faster than conventional surfactants. Among the derivatives, S-3Na prevented rust formation as effectively as commercial anti-rust agents did.

High-Level Production of Astaxanthin by Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous Mutant JH1, Using Chemical and Light Induction

  • The production of astaxanthin by Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous mutant depended on the culture conditions. Therefore, a cultivation strategy, including effective chemical and light induction, for the high-level production of astaxanthin by X. dendrorhous mutant JH1 was explored. Effective chemicals such as ethanol, acetic acid, and hydrogen peroxide, which are known inducers or precursors of astaxanthin synthesis, were investigated for their increase of astaxanthin production. Each of 1.0% ethanol, 1.0% acetic acid, and 1.0% hydrogen peroxide increased the astaxanthin concentration to 49.77 mg/l, 46.33 mg/l, and 45.61 mg/l, respectively. Among these chemicals, 1.0% ethanol showed the best effect on increasing astaxanthin concentration after 48 h of cultivation. Under 1.0% ethanol feeding condition, high light intensity (2,400 lux) stimulated astaxanthin production to 59.67 mg/l, compared with that in the dark-grown cultivation.
