  • Cushing syndrome (CS) is rare in pregnancy, and few cases have been reported to date. Women with untreated CS rarely become pregnant because of the ovulatory dysfunction induced by hypercortisolism. It is difficult to diagnose CS in pregnancy because of its very low incidence, the overlap between the clinical signs of hypercortisolism and the physiological changes that occur during pregnancy and the changes in hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis activity that occur during pregnancy and limit the value of standard diagnostic testing. However, CS in pregnancy is associated with poor maternal and fetal outcomes; therefore, its early diagnosis and treatment are important. Here, we report two patients with CS that was not diagnosed during pregnancy, in whom maternal and fetal morbidity developed because of hypercortisolism.

Multi-Time Scale Separations and Optimal Control Problems of Multi-Parameter Singular Perturbation Systems (여러 매개상수 특이접동계에서의 여러 시간스케일 분리와 최적제어 문제)

  • The hierarchical approach method is proposed to sperate each different time scale sub-systems from linear time invariant multi-parameter singular perturbation systems. By means of this proposal, the original multi-parameter singular perturbation systems is completely separated into independent subsystems with each different time scale. It is also investigated that the controllability of the system is invariant. And this paper applies singular perturbation methods to the minimum control effort problem for linear time invariant systems with constrained controls. Also near-optimum control theory, which is based on dividing the total time interval with the time scales respectively, is proposed. As a result, the time scale separation method is show to be particularly useful in a near optimum design which can be otained through a decentralized control structure.

Association Analysis between Polymorph isms of NOTCH4 Gene and Schizophrenia in Korean Population

  • Notch signaling plays a crucial role in development of the nervous system. Neurodevelopmental hypothesis on etiology of schizophrenia has been implicated. The aim of this study is to determine whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of Notch homolog 4 (Drosophila) (NOTCH4) gene are associated with schizophrenia. This study included 283 schizophrenia patients diagnosed according to DSM-IV and 301 normal control subjects. Control subjects without history of psychiatric disorders were recruited. Four missense SNPs [rs915894 (exon 3, Lys117Gln), rs2071282 (exon 4, Pro204Leu), rs422951 (exon 6, Thr320Ala), and rs17604492 (exon 18, Gly942Arg)] of NOTCH4 gene were genotyped by the direct sequencing method. Multiple logistic regression models (codominant, dominant, and recessive models) were employed to evaluate odds ratio, 95% confidence interval, and p value. For analysis of genetic data, SNPStats, Haploview, HapAnalyzer, SNPAnalyzer, and Helixtree programs were also used. Of 4 SNPs, rs2071282 was weekly associated with schizophrenia in two alternative models (codominant model, P=0.049; dominant, P=0.041). However, these associations were not significant after Bonferroni correction. At 4 SNPs, one linkage disequilibrium (LD) block was made. This block consisted of rs915894 and rs2071282. In haplotype analysis, AC haplotype was weakly associated with schizophrenia (dominant, P=0.04). This association was disappeared after Bonferroni correction. Our result shows possibility that some SNPs of NOTCH4 gene may be weekly associated with development of schizophrenia in Korean population. However, replication result by other population will be needed.

  • In this paper, we propose a new driving mode control algorithm for a mobile robot based on obstacle detection. The robot has a variable geometry single-tracked mechanism, so it can maximize a contact length with ground for the adaptability to off-road and puesue a stable system due to the lower center of gravity. However this robot system embodied passive type according to operator. In this reason, several problems are detected. So, this research presents a new method of obstacle detection using PSD infrared sensors and translates the variable tracks on the best suited driving mode actively. And experimental results about mentioned are presented.

  • The traffic congestion caused by the exploding increase of vehicles became one of the severest social problems. Among the various approaches to solve this problem, controlling the length of traffic signals appropriately according to the individual traffic situation would be the most plausible and cost-effective method. To design a traffic signal controller which has such a property as adaptive decision-making process, we adopt fuzzy logic control method(fuzzy traffic signal controller), Moreover, using genetic algorithms we obtain an optimized fuzzy traffic signal controller (GA-fuzzy traffic signal controller). To evaluate and validate the proposed fuzzy and GA-fuzzy traffic signal controller, simulation results are presented.

  • In this paper, we propose a new obstacle negotiation method for the rescue robot. The rescue robot has a variable geometry single-tracked mechanism, so it can maximize a contact length with ground for the adaptability to off-road and pursue a stable system due to the lower center of gravity. In this research, we add the basis of autonomous navigation, driving mode control based on obstacle detection, to the robot to realize automation of mode transformation. Obstacle detection using PSD(Position Sensitive Device) infrared sensors gives active transformation of the track shape. Finally, experimental results about mentioned are presented.

  • The Oriental Medicine is described with so many terms of its own theory causing misunderstand of the concept which is expressed with same term used in modern medicine. Muscular system is also used in the both medicines, the Oriental Medicine and modern medicine. For the purpose of resolving the misunderstand of using the medical terms, we referred to a large number of literature for the muscular system in both medicine. Although there are few references concerning about systematic components in the Oriental Medicine, among the concepts of the Oriental Medicine, there are comparatively many approaches to the Meridian muscular system, a muscular system related with the Meridian, Therefore, there are many similarities and differences in the interrelation between the muscular system which was stated at the time of the concept of the Meridian system was developed and anatomical muscular system in the modern medicine. As a result of survey the references, we found out that anatomical muscular system is limited to visual compartments, whereas the Meridian muscular system is covering not only visual components but also the relation with internal organs. We conclude that there are conceptual differences in the kyung-keun system in the past and anatomical muscular system in the present.

Anti Angiogenic Effects of Isorhamnetin Isolated from Persicaria thunbergii

  • Persicaria thunbergii has been utilized for the treatment of cancer as a folk medicine. We examined the effect of isorhamnetin, a flavonoid isolated from Persicaria thunbergii, on angiogenesis in vitro and in vivo. Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) is a potent angiogenic factor found in various tumors. In this study, we found that the isorhamnetin decreased bFGF-induced human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) proliferation and migration in a concentration-dependent manner (5, 10 and $20\;{\mu}M$) whereas, it did not inhibit bFGF-induced capillary-like formation of HUVECs. The chicken chorioallantoic membrane assay revealed that addition of isorhamnetin (10, 20 and $40\;{\mu}M$) displayed an antiangiogenic effect in vivo. These results suggest that the isorhamnetin inhibits the proliferation and migration of endothelial cells induced by bFGF, which may explain its anti-angiogenic properties.

  • 목적 : 본 연구는 serotonin transporter (5-HTT) 유전자다형성이 중풍의 발병과 관련이 있는지 알아보기 위해 수행하였다. 대상 : 경희의료원 한방병원에 입원한 중풍환자 139명과 각 병원 중풍 기왕력이 없는 건강인 138명을 대상으로 하였다. 방법 : 각 그룹에서 개개인마다 DNA를 분리 정제한 후 Taq polymerase로 증폭하여 한천 겔에서 전기영동을 하여 잘려진 DNA fragment의 양상을 관찰하였다. 결과 : L/L, L/S, S/S의 세가지 유전자형이 검출되었으며 중풍군과 대조군 사이에 유의성 있는 차이는 발견되지 않았다. 개별 allele 빈도에 있어 중풍군과 건강인 사이에는 통계적인 유의성이 나타나지 않았다. 결론 : 이상의 결과를 통하여 5-HTT 유전자다형성은 중풍의 발병과는 직접적인 관련이 없는 것으로 사려되며 더 많은 환자를 대상으로 다른 환경요인 또는 유전자와 연관성에 대한 심도깊은 연구가 필요하다고 하겠다.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of Ryodoraku and association of Ryodoraku in Idiopathic Facial Paralysis Patients Methods : Subjects were 53 patients with Facial palsy patients and 28 normal people. We calculated the average Ryodoraku score(RS, ${\mu}A$) and each variation from physiologic range of 12 Ryodoraku points, and investigated the incidence when left and right points were simultaneously below(bilateral deficiency) or above(bilateral excess) physiologic range. Results : The electric current value of several meridian of normal group was more higher in idiopathic facial palsy group than in normal group. The measurement value of Ryodoraku followed sex was not significant statistically. Conclusions : These findings suggest that the measurement value of several Meridians of Ryodoraku is more higher in idiopathic facial palsy group than in normal group, because Ryodoraku has low correlation with Parasympathetic nerve.
