  • In this study, we calculated the fixed-type Areal Reduction Factor (ARF) of the Hancheon River basin in Jeju Island, and compared the calculated ARF and the ARF of the four major river basins suggested by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. As a result, the maximum fluctuation ratios of ARF for the four major river basins calculated using area, frequency, and initial duration time were significant: 7.61% for the Hangang River basin; 12.69% for the Nakdonggang River basin; 8.09% for the Kumgang River basin; and 17.98% for the Yeongsangang River basin. In addition, the differences between the maximum and minimum value of ARF for the Hancheon River basin based on 48 hours was 2.13%, and it was smaller than the one for the four major river basins: 8.92% for the Hangang River basin; 11.41% for the Nakdonggang River basin; 8.87% for the Kumgang River basin; and 17.17% for the Yeongsangang River basin. The Yeongsangang River basin had the highest difference.

  • Standing crops of freshwater phytoplankton was studied from October 1998 to September 1999 in Hyendo, Maam, Jangam, and Napo of Kumgang River. Standing crops peaked in July in Hyendo $(39.5{\times}10^3Cells ml^{-1}), Maam (112.1{\times}10^3Cells ml^{-1}), and Jangam (125.5{\times}10^3Cells ml^{-1}), while in August in Napo (288.6{\times}10^3Cells ml^{-1}), respectively. The standing crops ranged less than 5,000 cells ml^{-1} in most of months in Hyendo and Maam, while more than 5,000 cells ml^{-1}$ throughout the year in Napo, Jangam's standing crops being intermediate. Total standing crops throughout the year increased with downstream; the standing crops of Napo was 9.6 times higher than that of Hyendo. The standing crops peaked from spring to early summer in Jangam and peaked in other seasons in Napo. The small centric diatoms Cyczotella spp., Stephanodiscus spp. and filamentous diatoms Aulacoseira spp. played an important role to form the peak of standing crops.

  • To investigate the effect of turbid water on fish population, the length-weight relationship and its condition factor were applied to Kumgang fat minnow Rhynchocypris kumgangensis collected in turbid (the Daegi and the Jaun streams) and non-turbid stream (the Bongsan and the Gyebang streams) for a year from 2004 to 2005. The mean length of minnow between turbid water and non-turbid water streams was not significantly different. In the South River system, the regression coefficients (b) based on length-weight relationship were 3.21 in the non-turbid Bongsan stream and 3.07 in the turbid Daegi stream, respectively. On contrary, the regression slope in the turbid stream was a little higher than that of the non-turbid stream located in the Bukhan River system. The values were 3.20 in the Gyebang-stream and 3.23 in the Jaun stream, respectively. Our result suggested that chronic turbid water effect on the level of fish population has a little or no effect.

  • This paper centers around the etymological meanings of place names of the Kumkang region, restricting the discussion to a selected group of place names which make it possible to infer their cultural characteristics in the light of the latitudinal or longitudinal isoglosses. The legends of Komnaru and Choryongdae, for instance, derive directly from place names. Dialectal distribution is examined on the basis of the phonological features that are not very different between upper and lower reaches of the Kumkang river. The dialects get much more similar as they go further down to the lower region of the river. The original "Komanara(熊津)", also called "Northern Headland(北津)", underwent the sound change of Komannaru > Komkang > Kumkang(錦江), the last being alternatively abbreviated as Kum(錦). During the last half of the 14th century-around the close of the Koryo dynasty, that is-a literary work gave the beautified name "Nakhwa-am"(落花巖), meaning 'rock-bluff of falling flowers', to what was originally called Tasa-am(墮死岩), so-called because, in the year of 660 when the Paekje dynasty was being ravaged by the invading enemy, a number of court-ladies ended their lives by plunging into the river from there. It was 'a number of court-ladies'(諸後宮) who died; but by tradition of popular songs, the number has become "three thousand" - a case of hyperbole of course.

  • Dry sieving, wet sieving and photoscattering analyzer were tested as particle size analyzing methods for sediments from rivers and lakes of Han river, Nakdong river, Youngsan river, and Kumgang river area. Dry sieving showed a big error due to coagulating effect over drying process and this phenomena was severe for lake sediment. Wet sieving and PSA showed an accurate results though wet sieving needs more labor and complicate processes. Freeze-dry or freeze-dry after oxidation of organics with hydrogen peroxide showed improved results but gave lower portion of fine particles in comparing with wet sieving. Heavy metal contents and extractable metal contents were investigated for the sediments and high heavy metal content and extractable amount were obtained from fine particles as expected. Using of proper particle size analyzing method is important and the sediment management should be focused on the fine particles.

  • In the meantime, the study of traditional and contemporary house had been produced so many achievements in korea, but modern house is yet to be solved, Accordingly, It is necessary to develop and present the basic research data in order to build up an objective study for urban house in the modern age(1910-1945), Following to a study on the foreigner's house in grid-type settlement of Open Ports, in this research is to investigate and analyze modern houses of urban areas in korean inland, and then clarify types and changes of them. In the first year($1995{\sim}96$), the modern houses of Central Inland Districts(arrounding river Kumgang)-Kunsan kanggyong Puyo Kongju Pugang Chongju were investigated by the layout of room, the construction and materials, the design and style, etc. In the second year($1996{\sim}97$), the modern houses of Open Market(開市場)-Seoul Taegu Kwangju Taejon Chonju were conducted to investigate as above. The traditional house transformed by differentiation and addition of room(kan), the various types were respectively adopted for the korean reforming and western cultural house. In the layout of room, the types of plan were gradually concentrated from the single wings of korean traditional house. The korean traditional house was later improved through the introduction of entrance, corridor, and internal toilet/bathroom. But the korean under-floor heating system(andal) and a series of three rooms had been entirely maintained, composed of master bedroom/living room(daechung)/room. And the traditional town house with shop and storage, being built closely to each other and walled up both sides, it had taken gradually the extensive characteristics in itself. By the displacement of shop/dwelling/ storage. the various types were respectively adopted for the separated, multi-storied, and complex type. The type of them was gradually changed to the narrow and linear form. And so with the stockpile of fundamental datas about modern houses in korean urban areas, we expect these results contribute to the knowledge of the spatial characteristics of urban house at present which are required to the understanding of transition as well as types.

  • The spawning behavior of Liobagrus obesus was observed at Kumgang river, Yeongdong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do from Apirl to July 2004. The fertilized eggs collected by dip net and skimming net were carried to the laboratory of Chonnam National University, and then egg, larvae and juvenils development were studied. Hatching of the embryo began about at 225 hrs 15 mins after morula stage in water temperature of $19.5{\sim}24.9^{\circ}C$(mean $22.8^{\circ}C$). The newly-hatched larvae were $7.30{\sim}7.90mm$(mean 7.66mm) in total length (TL), their mouth and anus were already opened with 14+28=42 myotomes. Sixteen days after hatching, the postlarvae were $13.00{\sim}14.05mm$(mean 13.48mm) TL, the yolk sac was completely absorbed. The juvenile stage was reached when all fin-rays were formed at 24 days after hatching, and $15.31{\sim}17.20mm$(mean 16.31mm) TL.
