  • Dominant genera of heterotrophic bacteria were investigated seasonally in Kum River estuarine sediments. Numerical taxonomy on the isolated heterotrophic bacteria were carried out according to their morphological, physiological, nutritional and biochemical characters. Heterotrophic bacteria in the depths of 0 to 10 cm of sampled sediments were almost facultative anaerobes, and 77.9% to 86.9% of them were Gram negative rods. Kominant genera among the isolates were Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium, Micrococcus, Cnterobacteria and Vibrio during sampling periods. According to their character analyses by similarity index(S), the isolates were clustered in fourteen groups at clay type sediments (Site 1) and four groups at sand type sediments (Site 2).

  • This research is about slurry wear of SM45C and SUS304, which using standard sand and KUM river sand. The results are as follows ; 1. Mass loss rates of both standard sand and KUM river sand were linearly increased as increasement of time and velocity. 2. The average diameter of sand from relatively, less wear rate and portion of larger particles. 3. Wear resistance was linear with time and velocity of liquid jet regardless of type of sand. Also it was able to evaluate with the formula, HV2/E calibrated with n, the velocity index. 4. The wear surface in liquid jet experiment was smooth. The maximum wear depth was observed at the location, 2~4mm apart from the center in the condition of 90$^{\circ}$of collision angle 6mm of nozzle diameter, and 20mm of collision distance. The sectional shape in radial appeared as 'W' shape.

  • To estimate the chemical mass balance of several kinds of trace metals in sea water, suspended matter and bottom sediments, sixty samples from the Kum and Mankyung estuaries were analyzed. In both estuaries, the distribution patterns of leachabl suspended trace metals and of bottom sediments were established to be similar. The relationship between the metal concentration and clay content of the sediments was found to be such that the metal concentration increases with an increase in clay content. A linear correlation ws determined between pairs of leachable metals (Fe-Zn, Fe-Mn and Zn-Mn) in the Kum estuary. However, in the Mankyung estuary linear relationship does not exist. Finally, it is suggested that the trace metals are reworking in the Kum estuary and those in the Mankyung estuary are sinking.

  • This paper was performed to estimate interrelations between humus level of sediments and nutrient release from sediments in Dae-cheong reservoir. For investigations, sediments were sampled in June and October, in 1997 at fish farms, embayment, and the main stream of Dae-cheong reservoir. Items for investigation are as follows; water content, weight loss on ignition(IG), porosities of sediments, contents of element such as hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon, and nutrient release rates. Water contents and porosities were measured to conjecture the physical trait and grain size trait. Weight loss on ignition was measured to determine the contents of organic substance. For determination of the humus level of sediments, carbon and nitrogen contents were measured by elemental analyzer. As a result of elemental analysis, C/N ratio was determined in the range of $3.0\~13.1$. From the elemental analysis, humus level of Dae-cheong reservoir sediment was estimated from mesohumic state to oligotrophic state. For the determination of nutrient release rate, $PO_4-P$ and $NH_4-N$ concentrations of interstitial water and overlying water were measured. By using the concentration difference between interstitial water and overlying water and using the Fick's diffusion law, the release rates of phosphorus and nitrogen from the sediment samples were calculated. Release rates of nutrients which directly influence to the water quality were $0.05\~8.63mgP/m^2day$ and $4.99\~36.56mgP/m^2day$. It was found that release rate was measured higher in the 1st sampling period than in the 2nd sampling period. For the determination of phosphorus content in sediment, TPs were measured in 807\~1542{\mu}g/g$ in the 1st samling period and $677\~5238{\mu}g/g$ in the End samling period. Phosphorus release rate and phosphorus content were not interrelated each other.

  • Synthetic unit hydrograph equations for rainfall run-off characteristics analysis and estimation of design flood have long and quite frequently been presented, the Snyder and SCS synthetic unit hydrograph. The major inputs to the Snyder and SCS synthetic unit hydrograph are lag time and peak coefficient. In this study, the methods for estimating lag time and peak coefficient for small watersheds proposed by Zhao and McEnroe(1999) were applied to the Kum river basin in Korea. We investigated lag times of relatively small watersheds in the Kum river basin in Korea. For this investigation the recent rainfall and stream flow data for 10 relatively small watersheds with drainage areas ranging from 134 to 902 square kilometers were gathered and used. 250 flood flow events were identified along the way, and the lag time for the flood events was determined by using the rainfall and stream flow data. Lag time is closely related with the basin characteristics of a given drainage area such as channel length, channel slope, and drainage area. A regression analysis was conducted to relate lag time to the watershed characteristics. The resulting regression model is as shown below: ※ see full text (equations) In the model, Tlag is the lag time in hours, Lc is the length of the main river in kilometers and Se is the equivalent channel slope of the main channel. The coefficient of determinations (r$^2$)expressed in the regression equation is 0.846. The peak coefficient is not correlated significantly with any of the watershed characteristics. We recommend a peak coefficient of 0.60 as input to the Snyder unit-hydrograph model for the ungauged Kum river watersheds

  • Groundwater recharge rate was estimated by applying the groundwater level fluctuation method utilizing Theis (1937) approach with specific yield estimation technique of Shevenell (1996) and the temperature method using observed data from National Groundwater Observation Stations. Results based on analysis of water level observation data of 10 alluvium wells reveal that the recharge rates for 5 wells of Kum river area range 3.7~25.0% and those for 5 wells of Nakdong river area range 3.6~21.7%. Results obtained from the temperature method based on water temperature data indicated that the upward flow resulted from evapotranspiration is dominant for 4 wells of the Kum river area and 5 wells of the Nakdong river area. The other wells showed the downward flow which is related to groundwater recharge in these areas.

  • Precipitation and groundwater level data sets from Kum river watershed were analyzed and compared. The correlation between groundwater level and the moving average of precipitation was analyzed. Moving averaging technique is stochastic method and that was used to consider the effect of precipitation events on groundwater level fluctuation. Groundwater level generally follows seasonal precipitation pattern and low level occurs from early December to late April. Relatively high groundwater level is appeared in wet spell (July and August). The correlation between groundwater level and the moving average of precipitation to consider precedent precipitation events was analyzed with minimum two-year data sets. When the precipitation and groundwater level data set pair was selected the precipitation gauge station is closely located to groundwater level gauge station in the upstream direction to minimize the non-homogeneous precipitation distribution effect. The maximum correlation was occurred when the averaging periods were from 10 days to 150 days with Kum river watershed data. The correlation coefficients are influenced by data quality, missing data periods, or snow melt effect, etc. The maximum coefficient was 0.8886 for Kum river watershed data.
