In the case of mechanical control systems, it is highly useful to be able to provide a compact model of the mechanical system to control engineers using the smallest number of variables, while still providing an accurate model. The reduced mechanical model can then be inserted into the complete mechanical control system models and used for system-level dynamic simulation. In this paper, a moment-matching based model order reduction (MOR) which reduces the number of degrees of freedom of an original finite element model via the Arnoldi process is considered to study the dynamic responses of a HDD actuator and suspension system.

The numerical analysis of sound radiation by vibrating structure is a well known and mature technology used in many industries. Accurate methods based on the boundary or finite element method have been successfully developed over the last two decades and are now available in standard CAE tools. These methods are however known to require significant computational resources which, furthermore, very quickly increase with the frequency of interest. The low speed of most current methods is a main obstacle for a systematic use of acoustic CAE in industrial design processes. In this paper we are going to present a set of innovative techniques that significantly speed-up the calculation of acoustic radiation indicators (acoustic pressure, velocity, intensity and power; contribution vectors). The modeling is based on the well known combination of finite elements and infinite elements but also combines the following ingredients to obtain a very high performance: o a multi-frontal massively parallel sparse direct solver; o a multi-frequency solver based on the Krylov method; o the use of pellicular acoustic modes as a vector basis for representing acoustic excitations; o the numerical evaluation of Green functions related to the specific geometry of the problem under investigation. All these ingredients are embedded in the ACTRAN/AR CAE tool which provides unprecedented performance for acoustic radiation analysis. The method will be demonstrated on several applications taken from various industries.
In this study, the added resistances of the large container ship in head and oblique seas are evaluated using a time-domain Rankine panel method. The mean forces and moments are computed by the near-field method, namely, the integration of the second-order pressure directly on the ship surface. Furthermore, a weakly nonlinear approach in which the nonlinear restoring and Froude-Krylov forces on the exact wetted surface of a ship are included in order to examine the effects of amplitudes of waves on ship motions and added resistances. The computation results for various advance speeds and heading angles are validated by comparing with the experimental data, and the validation shows reasonable consistency. Nevertheless, there exist discrepancies between the numerical and experimental results, especially for a shorter wave length, a higher advance speed, and stern quartering seas. Therefore, the accuracies of the linear and weakly nonlinear methods in the evaluation of the mean drift forces and moments are also discussed considering the characteristics of the hull such as the small incline angle of the non-wall-sided stern and the fine geometry around the high-nose bulbous bow.

This study develops new analytical solutions to water wave diffraction by vertical truncated cylinders in the context of linear potential theory. Three typical truncated surface-piercing cylinders, a submerged bottom-standing cylinder and a submerged floating cylinder are examined. The analytical solutions utilize the multi-term Galerkin method, which is able to model the cube-root singularity of fluid velocity near the edges of the truncated cylinders by expanding the fluid velocity into a set of basis function involving the Gegenbauer polynomials. The convergence of the present analytical solution is rapid, and a few truncated numbers in the series of the basis function can yield results of six-figure accuracy for wave forces and moments. The present solutions are in good agreement with those by a higher-order BEM (boundary element method) model. Comparisons between present results and experimental results in literature and results by Froude-Krylov theory are conducted. The variation of wave forces and moments with different parameters are presented. This study not only gives a new analytical approach to wave diffraction by truncated cylinders but also provides a reliable benchmark for numerical investigations of wave diffraction by structures.
Recently, the Sub-Committee on SDC (Ship Design and Construction) of IMO have discussed actively the technical issues associated with the second-generation intact stability criteria of ships. Generally, second generation intact stability criteria refer to vulnerability five modes ship stability which occurs when the ship navigating in rough seas. As waves passes the ship, dynamic roll motion phenomenon will affect ship stability that may lead to capsizing. Multi-tiered approach for second generation of intact stability criteria of IMO instruments covers apply for all ships. Each ship is checked for vulnerability to pure loss of stability, parametric roll, and broaching/surf-riding phenomena using L1(level 1) vulnerability criteria. If a possible vulnerability is detected, then the L2(level 2) criteria is used, followed by direct stability assessment, if necessary. In this study, we propose a new method to verify the criteria of the surf-riding/broaching mode of small ships. In case, L1 vulnerability criteria is not satisfied based on the relatively simple calculation using the Froude number, we presented the calculation code for the L2 criteria considering the hydrodynamics in waves to perform the more complicated calculation. Then the vulnerability criteria were reviewed based on the data for a given ship. The value of C, which is the probability of the vulnerability criteria for surf-riding/broaching, was calculated. The criteria value C is considered in new approach method using the Froude-Krylov force and the diffraction force. The result shows lower values when considering both the Froude-rylov force and the diffraction force than with only the Froude-Krylov force was considered. This difference means that when dynamic roll motion of ship, more exact wave force needs considered for second generation intact stability criteria This result will contribute to basic ship design process according to the IMO Second-Generation Intact Stability Criteria.

The surge motion of a freely-floating sphere in a regular wave is studied within the framework of a linear potential theory. The fluid is assumed to be perfect and only the steady-state harmonic motion in a water of infinite depth is considered. A velocity potential describing the fluid motion is decomposed into three parts; the incident wave potential, the diffraction potential and the radiation potential. In this paper the diffraction potential and the radiation potential are analysed by using multipole expansion method. Upon calculating pressures over the immersed surface of the sphere, the hydrodynamic forces are evaluated in terms of Froude-Krylov, diffraction, added mass and damping forces as functions of the frequency of the incident wave. Finally the frequency dependence of two pertinent parameters, the amplitude ratio and the phase lag between the motion of the sphere and that of the incident wave is derived from the equation of motion. As for numerical results the general tendency of the present calculation shows good agreement with Kim's work who also treated this problem utilizing the Green's function method.

When a ship is travelling in following seas, the encounter frequency is reduced to be very low. In that case broaching phenomenon is most likely to occur, and it may be due to wave exciting forces acting on ships. It is thought that the wave exciting forces acting on ships in following seas almost consist of two components. One is hydrostatic force due to Froude-Krylov hypothesis, and the other is hydrodynamic lift force due to orbital motion of water particles below the wave surface. In the present paper, the emphasis is laid upon wave exciting sway force, yaw moment and roll moment acting on ships in following seas. The authers take the case that the component of ship speed in the direction of wave propagation is equal to the wave celerity, i.e., the encounter frequency is zero. Hydrostatic force components are calculated by line integral method on Lewis form plane, and hydrodynamic lift components are calculated by lifting surface theory. Furthermore captive model tests are carried out in regular following waves generated by means of a wave making board. Through the comparison between calculated and measured values, it is confirmed that the wave exciting forces acting on ships in following seas can be predicted in terms of present method to a certain extent.

The k-eigenvalue neutronics/thermal-hydraulics coupling calculation is a key issue for reactor design and analysis. Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov (JFNK) method, featured with super-linear convergence rate and high efficiency, has been attracting more and more attention to solve the multi-physics coupling problem. However, it may converge to the high-order eigenmode because of the multiple solutions nature of the k-eigenvalue form of multi-physics coupling issue. Based on our previous work, a modified JFNK with a line search method is proposed in this work, which can find the fundamental eigenmode together with thermal-hydraulics feedback in a wide range of initial values. In detail, the existing modified JFNK method is combined with the line search strategy, so that the intermediate iterative solution can avoid a sudden divergence and be adjusted into a convergence basin smoothly. Two simplified 2-D homogeneous reactor models, a PWR model, and an HTR model, are utilized to evaluate the performance of the newly proposed JFNK method. The results show that the performance of this proposed JFNK is more robust than the existing JFNK-based methods.
We analyze piecewise homogenization with flux-weighted cross sections and preservation of averaged currents at the boundary of the homogenized domain. Introduction of a set of flux discontinuity ratios (FDR) that preserve reference interface currents leads to preservation of averaged region reaction rates and fluxes. We consider the class of numerical discretizations with one degree of freedom per volume and per surface and prove that when the homogenization and computing meshes are equal there is a unique solution for the FDRs which exactly preserve interface currents. For diffusion submeshing we introduce a Jacobian-Free Newton-Krylov method and for all cases considered obtain an 'exact' numerical solution (eight digits for the interface currents). The homogenization is completed by extending the familiar full assembly homogenization via flux discontinuity factors to the sides of regions laying on the boundary of the piecewise homogenized domain. Finally, for the familiar nodal discretization we numerically find that the FDRs obtained with no submesh (nearly at no cost) can be effectively used for whole-core diffusion calculations with submesh. This is not the case, however, for cell-centered finite differences.

This paper considers a numerical analysis of ship maneuvering performance in the high amplitude incident waves by adopting linear and nonlinear ship motion analysis. A time-domain ship motion program is developed to solve the wave-body interaction problem with the ship slip speed and rotation, and it is coupled with a modular type 4-DOF maneuvering problem. Nonlinear Froude-Krylov and restoring forces are included to consider weakly nonlinear ship motion. The developed method is applied to observe the nonlinear ship motion and planar trajectories in maneuvering test in the presence of incident waves. The comparisons are made for S-175 containership with existing experimental data. The nonlinear computation results show a fair agreement of overall tendency in maneuvering performance. In addition, maneuvering performances with respect to wave slope is predicted and reasonable results are observed.
