  • Social awareness of mathematics and academic attitudes toward the value of mathematics education has kept changing according to the intellectual, political and religious contexts. In this article, we examine how mathematics was defined and recognized in liberal arts education of the Roman Empire and early medieval Western Europe. This study analyzes how mathematics was described in encyclopedic works written in the Roman era after the mid-second century BC and in the Western European monasteries and cathedral schools after the fifth century. Ancient Greek mathematics took a clear place in liberal arts education through encyclopedia writings and prepared a mathematics curriculum for medieval universities. I hope this study will contribute to understanding the origin and context of the mathematics curriculum of medieval universities.

  • In this paper, we introduce an iP2 extension of a star graph Sn for n ≥ 2 and 1 ≤ i ≤ n - 1. Certain general properties satisfied by order, size, domination (or Roman) numbers γ (or γR) of an iP2 extended star graph are studied. Finally, we study how the parameters such as chromatic number and harmonious chromatic number are affected when an iP2 extension process acts on the star graphs.

  • The concept of the "Seidenstrassen" (Silk Road) was created by the German geographer F. von Richthofen (1833-1905) in 1877. The "Seidenstrassen" means communication between China and the Roman cultural area. To prove the route of dissemination of silk, Richthofen not only focused on geographical substantiality, based on the routes of the Chinese Zhang Qian and the Roman Ptolemy, but also on etymological, historical, and religious sources. In fact, his Silk Road concept has the trade of silk as well as the humanistic ideas of cultural exchange. It is worth noting that in his book China, Richthofen presented the Silk Road as a space-time concept that considers the length of space as well as the length of time by highlighting humanistic examples that came into modern times through the Sea Route. Later, the English term "Silk Road" appeared in 1938, the Japanese term "シルクロ-ド" (sirukurodo) in 1939, and the Korean term "실크로드" (silkrodeu) in 1952.

  • The starting point of education is the ancient Greek philosophy. In this paper, we research the Hellenism culture: two famous poleis such as Sparta and Athens. Moreover, we investigate prominent philosopher Plato and Aristotle. In particular, we notice early childhood and female education through Hellenism culture. Finally, we study culture, politics and educations of the ancient Roman in order to compare those of our society.

  • Synergic antibacterial effects of a sweet flag, essential oils, such as geranium, lemongrass, cypress, chamomile roman, tea tree bergamot, lavender and sandal wood, and the combination of sweet flag and essential oils on Streptococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans were observed in this study. As the results of the tests, the growth of Streptococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosu and Candida albicans were inhibited in the presence of sweet flag and/or the essential oils. Consequently, the sweet flag and all essential oils was proved to have antibacterial ability, and thus, can be applied to cosmetics.

  • The Purpose of this paper is to gather pairs of heteronyms in modern Korean and transcribe them in the IPA and the Roman alphabet in order to propose that all of them should be differentiated in Hanngul orthography. More than a quarter of the whole Korean vocabulary consists of words with a long vowel and the number of minimal pairs distinguished only by the chroneme reaches nearly ten thousand (i.e. twenty thousand words). The letter h syllable-finally is used here to represent the long vowel in Romanization except the vowel '으‘[?:] which is transcribed by doubling the letter u (i.e. uu). Another factor bringing forth lots of heteronyms in Korean is the lack of full indication as to the non-automatic reinforcement in the initial consonant of a word (or a morpheme) when preceded by another within a phrase (or a word). These reinforced word-initial consonants are written with the letter c and an apostrophe (like c'g- , c'd- , c'b-, c's-, c'j-) in Romanization here. The reinforced morpheme-initial consonant within a word is written with the letters k t, p, ss and cz for ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ and ㅉ sounds respectively. The contrasted pronunciations of pairs of heteronyms beginning with ㅅ /s/sup h// and ㅆ /s/ sounds are transcribed here for exemplification.

  • In this paper, the robust control scheme with the improved control performance within the boundary layer is proposed. In the control scheme, the robust controller based on the traditional variable structure control method is modified to have the adaptation within the boundary layer. From this controller, the width of the boundary layer where the robust control input is smoothened out can be given by an appropriate value. But the improved control performance within the boundary layer can be achieved without the so-called control chattering because the role of adaptive control is to compensate for the uncovered portions of the robust control occurred from the continuous approximation within the boundary layer Simulation tests for circular navigation of an underwater wall-ranging robot developed for inspection of wall surfaces in the research reactor, TRIGA MARK III, confirm the performance improvement. Notational Conventions Vectors are written in boldface roman lower-case letters, e.g., x and y. Matrices are written in upper-case roman letters, e.g., G and B. And ∥.∥ means the Euclidean norm.

  • This study is to investigate whether or not the aroma treatment has a positive impact on the reduction of anxiety of the school children when presenting a speech. Participants were 70 school children(20 males and 15 females for the control group, and 21 male and 14 females in the experimental group). They were exposed to 4 different scents i.e., lavender barreme, lemon, orange sweet, chamomile roman that were vaporized through humidifiers. Pre and post self-report type of SAS done by the children and SBES done by teachers were done before and one and two weeks after the treatment. The result indicated that children with aroma treatment than children who had no treatment showed a significant decrease in speech anxiety and improvement in behavior during speech.

  • Examples of GPR survey results at a variety of archaeological sites are presented. Several new analyses which include static corrections for the tilt of the GPR antenna are shown for imaging of burial mounds with significant topography. Example archaeological site plans developed from GPR remote sensing of Roman and Japanese sites are given. The first completely automated GPR survey, using only Global Positioning Satellite navigation to create 3D data volumes, is employed for a site in Louisiana to detect lost graves of the Choctaw Indian Tribe.
