  • This study presents the results of conservation treatment and research on a folding screen with embroidered classical Chinese characters "壽" (su) for longevity and "福" (bok) for good fortune in various scripts. The project was conducted as part of the program for supporting overseas Korean galleries in 2016. The present mounting of this ten-panel folding screen was difficult to identify as it had previously been remounted in a modern style. However, clues to the original mounting were discovered during the conservation process. It was revealed that the folding screen was decorated with colors frequently used in Joseon-period, such as teal silk at the top and bottom of each panel and a violet frame. These features provided clues to the original mounting of the folding screen, of which only a few elements have survived. Since this study analyzes only case of one folding screen, further research is required to reveal the method of mounting folding screens applied during this same period.

  • Cui Bu (1454~1504 BC), named Yuanyuan, named Jinnan. Served as the deputy manager of the Korean King Chosun Hongwenguan (fifth grade official). In 1487, on the way to Jeju Island to perform official duties, because his father died, he went home from the funeral on the third day of the first lunar month in 1488, but was unfortunately on the way. Encountered a storm, and drifting at sea for nearly half a month, he landed at the "Linhai County Boundary of Taizhou Prefecture, Zhejiang Province, Datang Kingdom" (now Sanmen County). Later, Cui Bu went to Hangzhou by land near Taizhou, where he landed, then via Hangzhou, took a boat along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal to Beijing, and from Beijing by land through Shanhaiguan, and returned to his country via the Yalu River. Cui Bu stayed in China for four and a half months, 136 days, and traveled nearly 9,000 miles. After returning to China, he wrote the book "Piaohailu" in Chinese. This diary-style book has a total of more than 50,000 characters, covering politics, military, economics, culture, transportation, and local customs in the early years of Hongzhi in the Ming Dynasty. The situation is an important document for studying China's Ming Dynasty coastal defense, political system, justice, canals, cities, topography, and folklore.

  • Objectives : On the internet, the bibliographic information service systems of the theses for the degree of Korean medicine(KMT) have been builded by the National assembly library, the National library of Korea and the eleven central libraries of eleven colleges of Korean medicine in Korea(KMU). Because there was a lot of information of Korean medicinal research & development(R&D) in those KMT, the MKT are most valuable in the Korean medicinal R&D. This study was carried out to understand and analyze the information service systems of the theses of Korean medicine provided by those libraries. Methods : We collected the bibliographic information of KMT on the internet in the National assembly library, the National Library of Korea, KMU, and some references of KMT, and then made a comparison between the bibliographic information of KMT and those KMU about the simpleness of searching and the accuracy of the contents. Results : Many of the Korean medicinal information service systems of KMU are poor on the simpleness of searching and the accuracy of the contents. On the accuracy of the contents, the bibliographic information service systems of KMT mistakes about 20% because of misusing of a Chinese character, a rule of the initial sound of a syllable of the Korean alphabet, and an erroro of the term day on KMT.

  • As to the structure of author tables for the Korean libraries using the Korean alphabet Hangul for filing, no other system is understood more relevant to author notations than the analytico-synthetic system. The Korean character consists of syllables respectively dividual into 'consonant+vowel' or 'consonant+vowel+consonant,' with the first element a consonant and the second a vowel. When these elements are synthesized with figure representation, they make an enumerative two-figure table. Individualizing and assigning, therefore, are done without listing many en-tries on the table or looking up notations in ready-made enumerative author tables. We still do not have general agreements in form of entry, reading of the Japanese and Chinese names, transliteration of foreign words, and filing system. What is more, so flexible and hospitable a notation system should be adopted as to meet the anticipated changes. The writer introduces an author notation system that could make 150,000 divisions by combinating figures, thus making it possible to endure changes through readjustments. It is considered effective, convenient, and efficacious for individualization.

  • T. Nakai, who wrote Flora of Koreana vol. II in 1911, cited V. L. Komarov's collections and listed more than 120 specimens with ca. 65 localities. All collection sites cited were described in the Romanized characters based on the Russian pronunciation. Therefore, it is very difficult to pinpoint those sites using the current or old version of Korean map. From this study, many names were reviewed based on other studies (both the Russian version and the Japanese translated version) and records (e.g. specimen label) and presented based on the current provinces with local names, the Chinese character, the GPS data and the first page of citation.

  • This paper written by Choi Bu based on "Piaohailu". This book consists of 3 volumes and it is his travelogue; Choi Bu has departed from Jeju Island to Naju, Jeolla province in the end of 1487, but it drifted on his way, so arrived to Zhejiang Province, China(Mid-Ming Dynasty) in early 1488. In this place, he interrogated with a reason for Japan pirates, but he released soon. And his waterway journey from Hangzhou to Beijing, he had received the award in Beijing which is the grace of the Emperor;and his land route journey from Beijing through Liaodong to Uiju, Pingan Province. Afterwards, this book had been translated in Japanese, English etc; and it had been awarded an alias of 'Chaoxian's Marco Polo'.From the description of the characters in the Mid-Ming Dynasty in the work of Pyohae-rok, the essay makes a study on the knowledge of ancient Korean scholars to China, and looks at the different social and political aspects and characteristics of the Ming Dynasty from the eyes of Korean scholars. It summarizes that when we face history squarely, it is important to refer to and draw on the foreign works recorded by ancient Korean scholars.

  • In the course of completing a National Research Foundation project, I recently found that a handwritten Korean manuscript of The Tale of Mei Fei is kept in the Adan Collection, which is a significant scholarly discovery given that no relevant research is available. The editions of the Tale of Mei Fei available in Korea include ${\ll}$藝苑?華${\gg}$ edition, ${\ll}$說?${\gg}$ edition, and the handwritten manuscript in Korean collected in the Adan Collection. Being the only handwritten Korean translation of the work, the Tale of Mei Fei in the Adan Collection was appended by the translations of ${\ll}$한셩뎨됴비연합덕젼${\gg}$ and ${\ll}$당고종무후뎐${\gg}$. As for the practice of translation of the work, literal "word to word" translation was done for the most part of the text; some sentences were occasionally translated liberally. Also, as for the poems in the text, pronunciation of each Chinese character was provided along with the translated text.

  • Objectives : This paper studies the Tangaek-Unhoei(湯液韻彙) index of herbal medicine in the Inje-Ji(仁濟志) of the Imwon-Gyeongje-Ji(林園經濟志), which contains about 4,800 formulas. Created by 19th-century Joseon scholar Seo, Yugu, it not only lists the formulas according to their names, but also provides index by topic, which enabled the collection and effective application of massive medical information. Methods : We quantitatively examined the nearly 4,800 herbal medicines in the Tangaek-Unhoei and their categorization. Any uncommon or particular categorization was examined further by analyzing the original text. Results & Conclusions : The prescriptions contained in the Inje-Ji are categorized under 26 headings. They are listed according to the 106 units of the Chinese character dictionary and organized by double headings. This unique index makes it easy to browse the contents of such a vast book containing massive medicinal knowledge. In addition, the fifty or so remedies called 'Fang(方)' exemplify the author's attitude toward medicinal knowledge, which is both rational and inclusive. This is an attitude that should be recognized beyond tradition.
